For thousands of years the native Americans use the term Natonka as reference to the North American Buffalo (the great beast). In 1758 they were classified as a species bison bison. To the far north a species called wood bison range across North America and yes Europe and Eurasia also have their own wood bison or wisent.

Great information. Was raised with the term buffalo and was confused when only recently hearing bison. Visited Oklahoma in 1973 when I was a freshman and saw a live presentation of the trail of tears. A part of US American history that needs to always be taught so that it is never repeated. Enjoying watching you and your bison.
When you were describing the difference between Plains Bison and Woods Bison it was helpful to see a photo of Woods Bison to compare to yours. As the old saying goes a picture is worth a thousand words. I think your timing on this video is great and certainly not late. Great to see the babies growing up.
And next weeks video will be a quiz on bison, please know the types of bisons, the differences and where they live, know where a true buffalo comes from, and for extra credit order your Cross Timbers T-shirt... 🤣. Thanks for the info!
There's Bison in Europe aswell but it also almost went extinct. Now its mostly found only in Poland. Cape buffalo is from Africa and the water buffalo is from Asia.

I cannot believe so many Canadians and Americans refer to the Bison as Buffalo. They are two totally different animals. They should be proud of their historic animals.
I don't doubt your expansive knowledge on the subject, but personally the explanation was confusing. I came away with more questions than I started with. -Are bison their own species, or are they sub-part of another? -Where did the bison come from? Transported from Europe, or migrated from Asia (Bering Strait) or Canada? -Technically, "buffalo" never existed in our country. They were always "bison"?
Justin, Question: please post a video "what is the difference w/intelligence levels between American Buffalo vs American Bison? And what are the physical appearance/differences between each species?"
I always was taught Bison are from the American plains, with small horns. The native Americans hunted those. Buffalo is like the Water Buffalo, big curly horns.
Enjoyed the video and lesson on the different types and breeds of Bison. I'm going to have to look at the Bison that a local man has here close to me in NC. Y'all take care and God bless.
Question: How often do they get let out of the pen, so they can find shade? How do you get them into the pen when they are out? Would be interesting to hear about a typical routine with them!
Excuse me, they were not confused with African animals. Europe has its own bison. The word bison is an old name of Roman/French linguistic descent. These animals lived in the European forests and today still in the wild in forests in east Poland. In Germanic languages, these bison were called "wisent". They are the slightly less bulky version of the American bison. Today's Italian name for a "wisent" is "bisonte" - just an everyday old European name. These names are thousands years old. And these names reference the species "Bison bonasus". It may have taken some time for biologists to become aware that the America bison is not the same species but (now) "Bison bison". The word "buffalo" is an old European name as well and likely via Latin (bufalus and earlier bubalus) derived from an old Greek name for a wild bovine animal. Another wild bovine in the Euopean forests was the Aurochs that became extinct about 1627 with males' shoulder heights up to 180cm (almost 6') and these looked much more like today's cows. Put a big head on that and huge horns up to 80cm (over 30"), and that is very impressive. Wiki: "Although superficially similar, physical and behavioral differences exist between the American and European bison. The American species has 15 ribs, while the European bison has 14. The American bison has four lumbar vertebrae, while the European has five." Wisent: weight 800..1,000 kg, length up to 2.9m by 2.1m height. US bison: weight 400..1,200 kg, length up to 3.35m by 2m height. Note that the "on" or "one" in the end of the word likely is the "augmentative". That is a postfix to a word that indicates the big version and contrasts the "diminutive" postfix that indicates the small version: trumpet is the small version of something where trombone is the big version of that. As the Latin word for a generic farm animal "cow" or bovine is "bos" (bovis as genitive, or possessive form, from which the word bovine was derived), we have building blocks for the word bison. Anyhow, the words buffalo and bison have old European origins that predate travel to Africa and America. And both were used to reference original European bovine species. A traveler from Europe who had seen wisent or European bison could easily mistake the American for being the same species. You have to have closely examined and butchered each to find the couple of differences.
You keep referring Cape buffalo and water buffalo to Europe. But Cape buffalo is a southern African species and wild water buffalo is an Asian species. Nowadays domesticated water buffaloes are used all over the world just like other cow species. It is not to be compared to it’s wild cousin. In Europe we have the wisent, a woods bison with the scientific name Bison bonasus. It is also coming back from almost extinct. There are rewilding programs all over Europe to bring them back to their natural range. Even in my country The Netherlands we are so lucky to have a few dozens of them. In North America there are 2 close related types of bison; plains bison Bison bison var. bison, and the woods bison: Bison bison var. athabascae. You know all about them.
Thank you for the video, it is super informative. I know that buffalo was kinda a general name for them, just was sure for the different. Again thanks for the vid. Great job. Take care of yourself and the family. Best wishes
Hi. Just started watching your videos the other day, very informative. I too love history! I have my teaching certificate in Physical Education with a minor in History and Geography. I love Dances With Wolves, one of my favourite movies...seen it a few times as well! 🎥 I wish they would make some sequels as it is an interesting way to teach history! Haven’t read all the comments to know if the question has been asked “Have they done any DNA testing on the Bison”? Neat how they bounce when they get excited! One of my neighbours has a heard . We took a group of school kids to visit them . Got to bottle feed a calf. Enjoy watching your videos! Wetaskiwin, AB. 🍁🇨🇦
Hey Canada! Such a great movie! Yes, any bison producer can have DNA taken from their herd and sent to the North American Bison Registry. Thank you, Dusty
Very interesting.! Quick question.., how would one compare the difference between beef and Bison in way of flavor.? Thank you for sharing...! Thumbs Up...
Do the Woods and Plains Bison weigh about the same. The Woods Bison seem to be much larger. Doesn't matter, they are both magnificent creatures... Thanks for breaking this subject down Coach😉. ☮
We have Buffalo? Farms near us and also alpaca farms too. I live in a semi rural area and so horse paddocks and etc. are not unusual,. As well as riding ranches. The area is mainly west of Minneapolis. I grew up in a village and most of my friends were farmers and kids were into FFA .
Well... I do! Says Maya!🤣she’s a scamp!!! Love her! We have two that come to our grooming shop for daycare sometimes... they are so dang cute!!! And rascally!!!❤️🙋‼️
Love your videos. I've gone back to your earlier ones. I was wondering about watering your animals. I haven't seen any water holes or you watering them. Also is this full time for you or do you have a job as well? Curious in Missouri.

There is another species of Bison still around, the European Bison or Wisent. Look really really similar to these Bison.
Thank you,
Dusty
Thanks for the tutorial 😊
Did not know the difference before now, thanks for the education, btw new subscriber sent by Daniel of ARMS FAMILY HOMESTEAD!
Excellent description.
This was very interesting, can you breed the 2 different types together.
Yes you can!
Is there bison anywhere else in the world?
Loved the movie. Wish we all could have taken the msg to heart.
Very interesting.! Quick question.., how would one compare the difference between beef and Bison in way of flavor.? Thank you for sharing...! Thumbs Up...
That's tough! I would say they are pretty close to each other. I would say you can taste the leanness of the bison though and it has less fat in it.
Do the Woods and Plains Bison weigh about the same. The Woods Bison seem to be much larger. Doesn't matter, they are both magnificent creatures... Thanks for breaking this subject down Coach😉. ☮
Deanna Marie woods bison are heavier!
thank you
Hi msiter good video what is the difference between us bison farm and cannada?
Great explaining. Thanks
The babies are growing soooo fast. But they are cute! May GOD BLESS!
8 Bison were send to New Zealand 1902 - 1904 and there are around 200 Bison in New Zealand
Thanks for sharing.
The main difference is that bison would never lose 4 straight Superbowls.
Great video 👍
What did the buffalo say to his son as he was leaving the herd? Bison. (Sorry, I couldn't resist. LOL)
For thousands of years the Native Americans referred to them as Tonka
Paul Konetchy we have large water tubs in the corral. We are gonna install some new system soon
What’s up with the numbers randomly appearing in the top left corner?
Check out the video at 7:47.
