When I was 19, Dream Theater had just released Images and Wors, and they played Pull Me Under on the radio, I was with my girl friend (who's now my wife) in the car and she was talking to me and i turned it up and jammed to the song and she just kept talking and I didn't pay attention to a word she said, the next day I went out and picked up the Cassette and then saw them in concert for that tour 3 weeks later....to this day I still have no idea what she was talking to me about. I still have my concert tee shirt from that show.
John Petrucci wrings every drop of emotion possible out of that solo. Has there ever been a solo with that kind of feeling written before? Absolute greatness right there.
This is by far the best version of the song - kills the studio version by a million miles! BTW, it's BuDoKan, a stadium known for its excellent acoustics that became iconic after Deep Purple did a live album from there back in 1972... since then, all bands dream of playing at Budokan, in the documentary DT made about their tour of Japan that culminated in this incredible concert, James LaBrie said that playing at Budokan had always been one of DT's loftiest goals. Hollow Years was only one of many highlights (basically because of Petrucci's majestic, jaw-dropping solo) in a concert that was PURE FIRE from start to end, starting off with the double-whammy of As I Am + This Dying Soul, passing through Endless Sacrifice, Instrumedley and Hollow Years, and ending with 6DOIT, Pull Me Under and In the Name of God. Memorable to say the least!
My very first introduction to DT (and in fact prog in general) was a friend of mine handing me this DVD. By the time the Instrumedley was over and the intro of Trail of Tears was playing I was thinking "where the hell has this music been all my life". From there the wonderful world of prog and jazz was opened to me, sortly after "discovering" (as in getting into the for real) the likes of Pink Floyd. Those first couple of decades of Dream Theater were glorious, and I'll fight anyone that says otherwise. And they'll always have a special place for me for throwing me head first into prog.
This guitar solo is in my opinion, the most beautiful guitar solo I've ever heard. Love DT and Joe Satriani and Steve Vai and everything like that. The amount of passion that John Petrucci puts into this solo is just incredible and the fact that it was improvised for the live version of this song, it just fit so well. I wish they would re-record the song on a future album with the solo in it because it's got so much emotion and adds so much to the song.
YEs you made it ! Dream Theater is my Fav Band as well.. and this guitar solo is one of the best live guitar solo ever ( by guitar god John Petrucci)..it was me who requested this song from you the sweetest couple of UA-cam! Thanks a lot! And honored me by mentioning about me ❤️ .. love and keep following you guys❤️🧡
You know what's the best part? You both clap at the same time, she didn't know you were doing it. But she did it at the same time. You guys are a great couple. Never let go. And this is one of the best songs every.
You are the perfect couple!!! Love everyone of you, love Dream Theater, And hear music together... The best complement to yours lives, And hearts... Greetings from Chile!!!! 🇨🇱
I adore this performance, so much, I`m haing it played at my funeral, along with the Spirit Carries on from Live Scenes From a Memory New York 2000, with the Gospel choir.
As I grew from grunge in the 90s ,my wife and I switched to Prog rock ,and Dream Theater were instrumental for making such an ez transition. This song from Falling Into Infinity ,and "Take away my pain" was greatly welcomed.
Happy anniversary today, and hope you have a great time tonight at the concert (i am sure you will). I am a Dream Theater fan since the way beginning when they came out ( i am from Long Island ), and seen Dt play at local clubs back in the day . Good times, seen DT probably 33 times over the years, never disappointed ever. You guys are awesome, and its fun to watch. I still get emotional after hearing the songs even after all these years, it never goes away. Love to watch the emotions, you guys get it. Rock on, Rockin marriage
Happy anniversary. Budokan is in Tokyo, it was built as a martial arts centre for the 1964 Olympics and tournaments and is considered a very prestigious place for bands to play - The Beatles were the first band to play there (1966 or 67 I think), Babymetal holds the record as youngest average age band (Su-metal was 16 the other two were 14 so their average age was just under or just over 15) to headline there when they sold out two nights in 2014.
#fateswarning We Only Say Goodbye. This band is my favourite progressive metal band. Somewhat a cross between Dream Theater and Queensryche but at the same time one of a kind. I’m pretty sure You guys will enjoy this beautiful song. Thanks for a great channel. Greetings from Sweden!
#dreamtheater Through her eyes live scenes from New York. Im from sweden and Through her eyes is such a touching song, I watched your reaction to the studio version of it and It moved me even more seeing rich crying. Just wanna say keep doing what you are doing cuz people obviously enjoy it, I'm one of em.
Seeying this reaction makes me wonder when the day will come you guys will react to the song “the spirit carries on” score version. That one has So much emotion and a wonderfull solo !!!!
DT is the only band that I know of that is better live than in the studio with some of their music! John's solos are seriously better than any meds out there! You two are in for an amazing experience tonight that you'll never forget! I saw 'em for the 12th time in Chicago last month & walked out of there with my head shaking wondering how they managed to improve themselves from the last time I saw 'em! I know you, like me will take in every note & savor every minute of the 3 hour show! Have an amazing evening & thank you for all of your amazing videos! Keep up the great work!
If you like Dream Theater, and I know you do, you should review "Instrumedley" Live at Budokan. Their ability to play so precisely in a live setting is phenomenal. You won't be disappointed
You guys are unreal..with so much passion & love..you get me with all my heart..music, emotions, passion, emphaty..please, keep on..try Queensryche; Suite sister Mary, pls. love ya 😘
Just to let you both know, the intro guitar solo and the middle distorted guitar solo that John plays was improvised and not part of the original song. The distorted song is considered by a lot of DT fans to be John greatest solo of all time. You have to check out "Beyond This Life" From Live at Budokan as well, they do a 4-5 minute instrumental improv part in the middle of the song that is beyond legendary. Cheers!
At least new millenium, peruvian skies, hells kitchen!!, lines in the sand!, anna lee (kel can comment on piano) and trial of tears. That's half album hehehe
Thanks for react !!!! I love you both !!! Talk bout dream theater, their best concert is SCORE 20 years of their journey. Love you from INDONESIA !!!!!!
Hi from Portugal. I love Dt . First time was in 1992. I love your reactions. The music that I like is" bombay vidaloo. Please react that one. Big 💙 to you.
Dear friends, I think you are ready to listen to Instrumedley Live at Budokan ( Dream theater ) and comment on whether you recognize each musical fragment. Hugs to both.
Thank you for this reaction, I had not listened for this song for years. And sometimes, it's good to be remembered how much of a titan is John Petrucci. One of the very best guitaris in the world.
This was a great reaction. Rich, you said you never heard this song before? The studio version is beautiful but the live version is just so much better and so much more robust. You can't go wrong with either version but I'm glad you guys had the opportunity to hear the live version.
You may want to check #anathema OnelastGoodbye or Untouchable (in both parts) from Universal live album. Very underrated progressive rock band from England playing all different kinds of music from hard metal to emotional rock. I think Kel might enjoy classic touches in their music as much as amplified guitars.
#Unitopia Tesla, Finland. I think you both just might appreciate this one, it's the first song I heard from them and it was quite a pleasant accidental find. From one prog rock appreciator to another.
I like how you were feeling the guitar solo first with your eyes closed and the moment petrucci went god mode you opened your eyes just to witness it ! 🤣😑😑
Love your work guys....Please, you must react to either a song from Australian Progressive/alternative band, 'Calugulas Horse' called Marigold ...or a Greek progressive metal band called 'NEED'....and specifically the song 'Hegaiamas'...You won't be dissapointed in the least.
Been a while.....you want to scale the heights and try something a little different....LSD : Heaven Can Wait. I know Kell will love it as soon as the chorus kicks in. I fucking love it and I'm an old school metalhead. Great shit shines through, period. Fuck genre, that's for peoples with limits.
That solo was all improv, and it gives me chills every time i hear it...
🥲
John Petruccis guitar solo trancends greatness, to straight up god like status. The emotion in his solo is close to untouchable.
you are so right..
That Improv solo section is orgasmic!

The Chilean version on 2010 was perfect too
