Long live porridge! Cycling is a carbohydrate sport where stamina and endurance are very important... Even the pro teams are encouraging diets with a higher carbohydrate consumption... As I know the English teams love oats (they have the tradition with porridge) and the Italian prefer rice... Don't get me wrong... They eat other things...but in order to fuel hours of practice in a day you need carbohydrates... I am curious how you will feel... The important thing is to consume your calorie target...if you go lower you will not feel good...

Heck yes to the lentils, beans, nuts. Also iron supplements. Iron from plant material is harder to digest than from animal sources, so you need more of it. I'm not vegan, just a mostly-plants pescatarian. There is no way I can volumetrically consume enough plant matter to get enough iron. One pill a day before bed with a little juice and I'm good to go.

I'm vegetarian since 6 years and I do high level sport (almost everyday).
      1) During the 2 to 3 first weeks you're very hungry. Then, you get used to this diffent type of food and everything is alright again.
      2) Watch out to have a well balanced diet (1/3 = vegetables, 1/3 = cereals (rice, pasta,...), 1/3 = leguminous plants (lentil, bean, flageolet,...), + essential fatty acid (nuts, nut oil, ...)!
3)You will soon feel "better/lighter" in your whole body.
4)If you go long terme with this type of diet I recommend you to take B12 vitamin. It's like a sweet (I always choose cherry flavour ;) that you take in the morning (two weeks per month to have a lot of margin). And after a year try a blood test to see if you do everything alright.

I don't know if the times really are changing, but it's refreshing to see people at least being more accepting of the concept rather than adversarial. Anyway, best of luck Hankster, I'm sure you'll do fine with the right nutrition -- seems you're in great hands. I really appreciate that you're trying a vegan diet, Hank. To see significant health benefits, the Whole Plant Food may be needed. Plants are really healthy to eat, but only in a form close enough to how nature made them. And there is not a single alcohol beverage, that would promote health. Also, smoothies and other calories conteining liquids are actually food, so it is necessary to chew them very well for propper digestion! So the healthiest proven to eat is all kind of vegetable, fruit, whole grains, legumes, some seeds, mushrooms... Foods heavily compromising health are: all animal based food and heavily processed foods such as: any kind of oil, margarine, sugar, brown sugar, honey, sirups with an exception of date sirup, any kind of salt, any kind of flour, isolated protein or anything isolated and animal food substitutes. Borderline foods are: nuts, no added oil or sugar dried fruits, tofu natural, non sweaten no added oil plant milk as long as it is chewed properly. I wish You good health and succes. Greetings from Prague

Nice one Hank!! I've been vegan for almost 7 years now and have never felt better - what I'd say is when you initially start eating vegan you need to eat more than you think, as plant foods are usually of lower calorific value than animal foods and you can not eat enough without realizing it! I'd recommend prioritising carbs for each meal - lots of rice, oats, potatoes, pasta and including some good proteins - beans, mock meats (most supermarkets sell own brand soya mince which is good, Quorn vegan range, Linda McCartney, Richmond vegan Sausages) tofu, soy yoghurt and some fats - avocados, nuts and nut butters, seeds, coconut yoghurt, coconut milk, vegan cheese, hummus, guacamole. Along with plenty of fruit and veg of course too. You'll be bullet proof! 💪💪

Besides generally being at risk of being low in protein and too high in carbs, vegans have to supplement carefully to achieve a balanced diet. Whereas, someone that eats plenty of veg, salad and fruits, plus a range of animal proteins has no issues with eating a balanced diet. It’s easy. Specially, vegans need to supplement because none of these essential nutrients can be found in plants:

I would say that I think a lot of people who initially try going vegan get overwhelmed with meal preparation and think that every meal has to be complex, and this can deter people. I would say just keep it simple, cook the things you know and like and just use meat alternatives until you’re comfortable with being completely meat/ dairy free!

I really like his first piece of advice - motivation. That makes the difference between success and failure. I moved from omnivore to lacto-ovo vegetarian for a year or so, then cut out all animal products except sushi for another year, and then cut out everything a year later. I’ve been completely plant based for 8 years now. I was extremely committed and motivated to get there. I think that makes the difference - whether you switch over all at once, or take some time. Either way eliminating as many animal products as you can will serve you and the world as well. If at the end of your trial you decide this isn’t for you - at least consider just eating fish as your only meat. There is strong evidence that a pescatarian vegetarian dietary pattern is incredibly healthy.
I can tell you that my labs remain awesome, energy level is great, and I’ve lost no muscle mass.
One last thought - while the mock meat is a great transition tool - I recommend getting through that quickly. It’s really processed and usually full of salt. I have it as an occasional cheat.

I did the Vegan diet for over two years and I was racing mountain bike back then and I have never felt better in my life. I just found it very expensive. One of the other positives is reading the labels on everything and finding that too much of what is on the market is highly processed and being able to better avoid those products. One other thing, I was amazed to see just how much plastic is used to package just about everything.

    • @Brainless437

That also my concern. If you buy vegan products you have to pay almost double the price of non vegan products (e.g. milk: normal package costs 0,79 - 1€, Oath Milk is abour 1,80 - 2€here). Also the Amount of food that I have to buy to get my calories in is ridiculous (Plus the higher prices). My sister is vegan for a couple of years, so I have tried.... Chapeau Hank! I'm vegan for 3 years as of this month, and I have some thoughts on how you can recreate that Full English using just plant-based ingredients:
Eggy Tofu Scramble (I prefer this to egg substitutes like JustEgg because it's less processed and higher in protein):
Heat 2 Tbsp olive oil in a skillet
Once hot, crumble in 1 block of firm tofu
Pour in approx 3 Tbsp tamari or soy sauce (more or less to taste)
Stir to combine ingredients and break apart tofu
Continue heating until liquid in pan is mostly evaporated
Add approx 1/4 cup of Nutritional Yeast (more or less to taste)
Stir to combine. Nutritional Yeast should soak up much of the remaining moisture. Be sure to do this as a seperate step from your other dry ingredients.
Add 1 teaspoon Tumeric and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, plus salt and pepper to taste, stir to coat, and you've got yourself a tofu scramble that makes a great egg substitute.
    Shiitake mushroom bacon:
Slice one 4 oz pack of shiitake mushrooms to approx 1cm thick
Add 1 Tbsp of salt, 1 Tbsp of smoked paprika, and 1/2 tsp of pepper, toss mushrooms to coat
Add approx 1 Tbsp olive oil, toss to coat
Roast on backing sheet in oven preheated to 200 degrees celsius until crisp. Turn baking sheet halfway through if mushrooms are cooking unevenly.
Add one of those vegan sausages (hopefully they're the seitan / vital wheat gluten kind that are really high in protein), some baked beans, and toast and you've got it.

Eating plant based is not just great for your health and the environment but it also creates a Sattvic constitution for your mind and consciousness. It makes you more peaceful, harmonious, balanced and helps you adapt to the stresses of the world. This is why gurus and holy men since time immemorial have always ate a Sattvic diet. Not to mention you are accumulating positive karma by living a life of Ahimsa (Respect for life of animals with a central nervous system, consciousness & non-violence). It takes a true master of ones own mind to subdue the animalistic urges and tendencies to consume flesh for sensory pleasure [taste]. Blessings to you for bringing awareness to this way of life.

Nearly one year now on a whole food plant based oil free diet (you could call it vegan). Result: weight -12 kg (mostly fat but some muscle, too, if my scale is correct), blood pressure dropped 10 ish units to a more healthy range (I was in the okay range always, but it seems it can always be better), and cholesterol dropped significantly. Power is the same (did not train to improve my FTP but working on it at the moment) absolute, but obviously relative power has improved significantly. Going up hills has become somewhat more enjoyable ;-). Recovery is going so much better, which means more training for me (15.000 km 2020). Well, I can only encourage people to give it a try. I don't want to be a missionary about it, do what you like. But as cyclists, we can do even better when it comes to the environment by cutting out animal farmed foods.

I'm vegetarian for 18 years, vegan for 7 months: no problem with protein ever. TIP: If you didn't cook much before, don't go crazy with cooking now: it might be tough to figure out whether you dislike the actual diet or just the prep time. It'd be nice to minimize the number of variables and just keep it to diet and not pain-in-the-butt-ness of prep...

I can guarantee over time your gonna find stuff you love and eventually being vegan and making the food will just become second nature.
I personally take a B12, multi and Iron 3-4 times a week which I recommend for us vegan athletes.
Save the animals and kick ass on the bike at the same time. What could be better? :)

Onions, celery, carrots, red lentils, and veggie stock.
Sauté chopped onions, chopped celery and grated carrots ( approx 3) in butter.
Rinse lentils and add to above ingredients. Stir for a couple of minutes and then add you veggie stock.

I’ve been vegan 5 years. Here’s some advice-
My go to dinner is veg cooked in some soy sauce (Onion, Garlic, Chestnut Mushrooms, Broccoli, a Pepper, Carrot and Blackbeans) with a dash of Sriracha sauce and rice. My best tip would be that same veg combo or substitute each for something similar but still keeping the rough macro balance like lentils instead of blackbeans or Brussels instead of broccoli for eg, add a tin of chopped tomatoes and some spices or wine and you have a Bolognese or a Chilli, add chopped tomatoes and some coconut milk and curry powder and you have a curry, or one of those curry kits are quick and easy. I’ve had no issues building muscle and have stayed pretty healthy eating those meals and drop a vitamin supplement just to make sure, doesn’t do any harm. Also- the Huel product is ideal if you are concerned about macros.
Another hack for mince and potatoes which is a staple in Scotland is to have some veggie haggis, (trust me it’s incredible and totally a thing in its own right), finely chopped broccoli, chopped carrots and onion with, of course, mashed potatoes and some gravy. That’s an epic Sunday dinner!!
My best cycling snacks are Huel bars and Trek coconut flapjacks if you want a treat.
Glad you picked up the Barista Oatly as it is amazing, would also recommend Innocent coconut or hazelnut milk if you want a more flavoured coffee.

I'm 29. I'm fully Vegan for more than 12 years and cyclist for almost the same age. My only rule is to eat a lot. My advice for any who would follow the same path is just to eat as much relal food as possible, tons of fruit, grains and legumes. Try to avoid the "vegan" sobstitutes products and the too processed foods like that. Keep it simple, eat what you like as much as you can. Once you will use to the increased volume of food that will end to eat, you will have endless energy and power. BTW, in 2020 i had a lot of training and I increased my ftp from 305w to 340w, so I still able to build power even without any extra protein intake. So anyone shouldn't be scared to loose muscles with a vegan diet!

I have been a vegan for 6 months now (99%). It changes your whole metabolism. It took my body three months to adjust. I did it mainly to solve my digestion problem. A lot of people have a hard time digesting meat and dairy, und are unaware of that fact. The energy is drained from their bodies, trying to deal with the meat and dairy the best they can, which makes them vulnerable to other problems (as was my case). It also has added environmental benefits, like a much lower carbon footprint and animals that do have to die for your diet. As a cyclist, my power remained the same, but I am a lot faster uphill (since I lost 6 kilos) and I no longer cramp after 6 hours in the saddle (because I am losing a lot less minerals when I am sweating now). But each body is different. What I have learnt so far: It does not necessarily improve every athlete, but it is healthy for everyone.

Go on Hank and Hank’s mum! Reduce animal suffering, save the planet! Been vegan over a year and feel much better for it. 10kg lighter and fitter cardio wise for the same level of training.

I can recommend the BOSH cookbook. You can find loads of common dishes in it but then it's made vegan! Even Mac and cheese and pasta bolognese.
You can make anything you want by replacing the meat with a vegan option. For chicken I often use seitan. Most protein rich food there is! Also: eat more beans and nuts.

    Hi Hank,
Here is our chili recipe, you can also add rice to really make it filling.
Sauté one medium onion chopped in olive oil, after 3-5 minutes add in one large yam chopped up - after 5 minutes add 2-3 cups vegetable broth. Put on lid and cook down yams on medium low heat till tender. Add 2 cans Amy’s medium vegetable Chili. A can of garbanzo beans and a can of kidney beans add a bit of water to rinse out Chili in pot (approximately 1 more cup of water). Cook on medium, then chop kale or chard about 3 cups to add into Chili. Add about 1/8 cup coconut amino’s or soy sauce, 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp paprika, salt, hot sauce of your choice and a dash of balsamic vinegar and a rounded tablespoon of honey or agave nectar. Last chop Up cilantro to add just before serving.

Awesome Hank!! I've been vege for 36 years. When veges were considered freeks! Never gone vegan. 3 months mate! Give it 3 months, not just 1.

I'm vegan for 2,5 years now and I am very excited how Hank will do. Biggest change for me was my energy level. Since then I don't feel tired after lunch and I can concentrate much more. For recepies, don't go too crazy. A simple past with tomato sauce and vegetables does just as good as something fancy. Don't change your standard recepies too much and just replace the animal products in your normal meals with somethng vegan.
