Qualtagh is an electronic music producer based in Knoxville, TN, USA. A qualtagh is a sign of good luck. It's a word that comes from the Isle of Man, referring to the first person you greet on any given day or the first visitor to cross your threshold in a new year. (Pronounced KWAL-tuck)
My grandparents made recordings of music, lectures, and family holidays on a 2-track analog reel-to-reel machine in the ’50s and ‘60s. The RTR eventually ended up with me, along with a box of tape reels, one labeled ‘Ciardi’ in my grandfather’s handwriting. It turned out to be a recording of a lecture given by the late poet John Ciardi (1916 - 1986) about the mechanics of writing poetry. I love Ciardi’s illustrative way of speaking and the timbre of his voice and ended up creating a song overlayed with sparse vocal snippets from his lecture.
