literally every time my old coworker would come back from visiting home (deep southern WV) his trunk would be full of jars of his uncle's moonshine. we called it his car bomb 😂😂

Being a Canadian I kept hearing “poutine”…lol. Never heard of poutin, now I am enlightened! Thank you Tryers!!!

Poitín - pronounced pocheen. Its Irish moonshine. Supposedly it can be made from cereals, grain, whey, sugar beet, and potatoes. Traditional poitín is good for making you feel sick, starting fires, stripping paint, muscle rub, making you fall over a lot and making you go blind. Was often stored in holy water bottles which explains why one of my uncles was so devout.

Im already a fan of the Poitini, becuase as a Star Wars nerd, I just hear a Jawa trying it, liking it, and shouting "POUTINI!!!"
And that thought alone makes me happy.

The last drink must have been close to the alchemy of the Long Island Ice Tea, where the alcohol is somehow hidden from your taste buds. Then after 4-5 you stand up and someone keeps moving the floor under you.
Nobody "stands up" after five long island iced teas!

I was thinking that one should be called an Emerald Island. Or maybe that would be if you added absinthe. But then most people would only be physically capable of enjoying one while sitting next to Ciara and her super power.
@@stephendee7839 We had a drummer in my college Jazz band who had just turned 21 while we were on a trip to San Francisco. She was a skinny little thing, who was as tall as I am but weighed about as much as my left leg. She came down to the bar of the hotel we were staying in and sat down with me, another guy, and the band director who was known to have a sense of humor. She'd never drank before in her life, and upon looking at the menu chose a Long Island Iced Tea because she liked "tea." An hour and a half later the band director had bought her _four,_ and she had gone from happy, to _really_ happy, to stupid, to sleepy. The bartender refused to serve her any more drinks. Me and the other guy had to pilot her back up to her room, where her roommate (who was PMSing hard) tried to refuse to let her in. She took a bit of convincing, but eventually let us bring her in and put her in the bathtub. Needless to say, this poor girl looked like death warmed over when we took her to breakfast the next morning, and her roommate was about ready to kill us. Hell, I didn't do it! I had nothing to do with it, except getting her back to her room safely. Semi-safely.

I wonder how related to our American moonshine poitín is? Since, I believe, the original Appalachian settlers (the primary purveyors of moonshine) were Irish and Scottish.
That they said "Irish hillbillies" would definitely lead me in that direction.
Moonshine is made from corn. According to Google, poitin is made from "an eclectic crop of cereals, sugar beet, molasses, and geography a given, potatoes"
@@PsychoKittee1 moonshine is made from lots of things. Heck I’ve known old timers to make it from turnips and cherries. I think there is definitely some Irish influence in American “shine”.
Moonshine just means untaxed liquor, in theory it could be whiskey, rum, vodka
Poitín gets it's name from the container it's made in: a small copper pot still ("-ín" in Irish means "small"). Fairly sure pot stills are used for some moonshine too, so definitely could be some connection.

As a woman who has experienced lake effect Wisconsin snow more times than I can count, you so have my sympathies! Take it slow, lots of breaks, and keep the hot beverages coming.
Ha! Same! A normally 5 min walk to the corner store took me 20min trudging through 3 feet of snow, with not a plow in sight! Beer was needed!

This is from 17th January 2022 and they are in summer clothes and when they put that iced drink to their skin, I shivered, as we are in 12 inches of snow and the temps are near 0.
Shot last year during the Covid restrictions, hence the screens.

I love the accents. I've learned to imitate them by listening to y'all and the Irish Rovers talk. It's hilarious and I've been told I could fit in with the southern Irish folks. Slainte to you all and don't get hammered!

@@johngoldstone4548 the reason I said I could fit in with the southern Irish is because I'm from the southern US and have a pronounced southern accent and when I was talking to a friend in Ireland and sent her a voice clip with a bit of the Irish accent I learned, she said I'd fit right in with the southern Irish

My poitin story is many years ago my father got to try some when visiting his brother in law who still had cousins in Ireland.
The poitin had been smuggled in by a nun who had explained the bottle to the customs officials by saying “ it was just a wee bit of holy water she was bringing to her dear Cousin John”.
They waved her right through.
That night my dad got very tipsy and danced in his night gown ( I’d made as a joke).

Careful. I tried several types of Poitin in Ireland several years ago and it can be pretty rough, depending on which brand you try.

White wine and soda water is the very definition of a “Spritzer” which I must assume then is not a common cocktail in Ireland but is quit popular at in the U.S. and can even be bought premixed from certain wineries over here. Often it’s made with a sweeter white rather then a dry white wine.
That last one should be called an Irish Triathlon.

That last one with poitin, gin and whiskey should of been called triple threat. The few times I've been able to buy poitin at the closest liquor store in my area I typically make a mixed drink called an Irish mojito. Some fresh mint, ice, poitin and sparkling elderflower lemonade.
THAT sounds awesome! I'm just gonna have a glass of Everclear with a TicTac and chase it with a Milke's Hard Lemonade while staring at a flower. Close enough for government work.

You guys should try palinca.
It's the Romanian version of poitin, or moonshine.
They have fantastic orchards along the foothills of the Carpathians, but when they get some fruit that's bruised or otherwise not acceptable to take to market, they distill it into palinca.
It's *so strong*!
That said, these cocktails sound really good, actually.
but I think theirs is made from malted grains of some kind, not fruit. IDK how similar it can then end up

Was in Claire Morris in 1998? Had some northern Irish fellows bring some moonshine and share it with my fellow travelers. It was the day before a week long event in last July?. Did not imbibe.
Apparently Prosecco enjoys tremendous popularity in Ireland. But I can’t wait to try the Handshake!

@@aclonymous just so you know, different neighbourhoods in Dublin can have different accents, same for most of the cities and counties.
