  • Join me as I tinker with my 1980 Volvo 345, affectionately known as PGH. I check the points gap, adjust the ignition timing, and do an oil and filter change. There may have been a gap of a year before I actually finished the work...!

So good to see the old girl again!
She brings back soooo many happy memories for me.
If anyone has a good LHD example for sale in Spain, let me know 😊

I never saw a AC delco dizzy before on a Volvo B14, so this is very interesting to see.
Very well done, love your posts on yt👍🏻

Just a couple of points. Clean up the points before you set the gap as the sanding will remove material and change the setting. Pinging under load is usually too much advance. What I usually do is run my car on the highest octane fuel available and set the timing so it's just on the verge of pinging. Then back it off a degree or two. That's when I'd set the idle. This is how I do things and not necessarily what I suggest everyone do!

    Great video.
Incidentally, I passed you on the A421 this morning at about 9:30...I spotted the Fiesta and thought.."I recognise that car!" and low and behold it was you!
Sadly, my wife and the rest of my passengers didn't share my excitement! 😂😂
Keep up the great work 😊

Years ago the distributor rotated slightly on my 1983 340 due to dicky threads on the clamping bolt. I was only 17 and even though it created a bad flat spot the performance went amazing for one of these( i was actually able to overtake things that weren't tractors etc) but running out of petrol on the way home I calculated i was getting under 10mpg so was promptly retimed.

Proper Renault engine in that. I've still got the sump tool like yours, they must all use it. Another ornament in my toolbox 😂

Great spannering. Good that the 340 is smoother & nothing more satisfying than an oil change.

    A beautiful 340 ❤
You usually check the timing with the vacuum advance on the dissy disconnected unless otherwise stated 😊

Nice job Sion. Thought it would have taken 20w50 rather than 10w40

Great video! You get pinking if the spark is too early. Too late just means less power and more overheating. Another thing to check is whether your Haynes was talking about 4-star. 95-RON unleaded is a bit lower octane I think so spark should be a bit later. Also did you disconnect the vacuum pipe? That makes a big difference. If you didn't spark will be too late and you may be missing out on moaaaar powaaarh. And are you sure the old girl is happy with that rather newfangled synthetic looking oil?

Always used to put 20/50 in mine, and a bottle of Molyslip. Got well over 300k out of her before the rot set in to bad.

The gold 343 has actually just come out to play today! Gave it some attention then drove it to the car barn I have. First time I drove it in a few years I’m ashamed to say, and it didn’t miss a beat. The green 345 has been a naughty boy and lost power on me a few months ago, so it’s been in the corner as I sulk at it. But again today I’ve cleaned the carb and put in a fuel filter, so I’ll give it a test drive in a few days when it stops raining!

Out of curiosity, what is parts supply and service like for the 300 series Volvos?
I had heard that getting spare parts for them was a bit of a trial

Yeah it’s not easy certainly. There are a few dedicated suppliers, but even they are slowly closing down now. There’s still a community in the Netherlands

I didn't see when you used the coffee. Do you put it before or after the oil? Should you wait till it's cooled down or can you put it when still hot? ;)

The coffee is a special fuel additive you put in for a bit more zest 😝
