Without a doubt, this IROC race absolutely shakes me up because of Greg Moore and Dale Earnhardt.😔Both of these great drivers would later die at such young ages doing what they loved doing so much: driving a race car. The creepiest thing is Greg died some months after this IROC race. Dale, too, died less than sixteen months later. 😢 Such a tragic coincidence.😭 Greg and Dale, you two are racing each other up there in the big race course in the sky now. You were both heroes to so many people. Both of you will forever be missed. RIP. You will both never be forgotten.🙏🏻
Hearing the announcers talk about him signing with Penske for the 2000 season is heartbreaking. If they only knew how the course of fate and history would shake out looking back from the year 2023.
It is bitter to think it was Greg Moore's lone IMS Start in spite of the fact he never had a proper 1st Division A Main Indianapolis Start. (I don't know if he raced IRP Ever, but, it is important to bring up.)
It is a rare appearance, indeed. Dale grew his mustache back by late August, when he scored his next then-Winston Cup win at Bristol (after famously - or infamously, depending on who you ask - wrecking Terry Labonte on the final lap).
I just read that the reason he shaved it was for a snorkling trip with Michael Waltrip...yes...Michael waltrip...surprised mikey never told that story on speed seeing he likes to talk about every other occurance in his life (besides his divorce and the fact that he is a grandaddy now)
Thank you so much for this! I loved when IROC came to Indy! Do you have the 2000 race? That was my first and only IROC race I ever saw in person. And I was hooked ever since.
Dale wheres' your mustache man? I know my Dad hasn't shaved his since he was in Nam still has it at 67 I think my Dad and Dale r identical twins southern and same personalities when he died I cried felt so bad for his kids
Looking back on this race from 2023; These are the only laps Greg Moore would turn at Indy before dying a few months later. Earnhardt, Parsons, and Jenkins have also passed on. IROC does not exist anymore. The Indy 500 is now the only race held on the IMS oval. Helio Castroneves wins 4 Indy 500’s in the car that Moore would have driven had he not been killed. The rest of the drivers in this race are all retired.
IROC needs to be back but better promoted, more diverse race tracks and drivers from more series. Too many Nascar drivers in these in the last few years of it.
If you're looking for a revival of IROC, check out the SRX (Superstar Racing Experience) series. SRX features a mix of retired NASCAR and IndyCar drivers, plus local short track aces. They currently run six races a year on short tracks, but series co-founders Tony Stewart and Ray Evernham are open to adding more events (including a road course or two).
You cant mention Dale without mentioning Mark at IROC. These 2 dominated and it isnt close. What makes these 2 special is that they dominated on EQUAL race cars. No advnatage for any drivers. The driver really has to be skilled to win.
RIP Dale Earnhardt, Greg Moore, Benny Parsons and Bob Jenkins. Great racers and great announcers.

crazy how times have changed.....theres more people at a 12 car iroc race then a 43 car nationwide race at indy
Man this IROC race pulled in more fans than any cup race the last few years at Indy.
Its a crime that this is the only time Greg Moore raced at Indy.

A rare Dale Earnhardt without his famous mustache.
Where?
Amazing the crowd they had there , keep ticket price low , fill the stands !!
Man when IROC was a series that was amazing and had crowds bigger than the crowds we have now
Well, they're back last weekend in Lime Rock.

R.I.P :(
The peak Brickyard years. Pole qualifying Thursday Iroc and 2nd day trials on Friday for the Saturday afternoon race.
RIP Greg More & Dale Earnhardt. Kenny Brack had one of the worst crashes I've ever seen at Texas also. God I miss this series.

Rare to see Dale Sr without a mustache long ago.
Dale filled the stands
In this Open Wheel split period it was nice that CART wasn’t excluded for this 1999 year but a quick glance at 2000 it appears not the case.

Was Al Unser, Jr. the last non nascar driver to win iroc
Iroc championship, yes. That was 1988. Danny Lasoski was the last non-nascar guy to win an iroc race.
He is a NASCAR driver
Love iroc racing
@LMCMInterloper 1998, and it's already posted on youtube.

Because of Stuck up European Drivers who are too scared of Dirt lol

Dale sr was the Best at iroc
