This mama was no saint. She took on a child tht she couldn't care for then expected her adolescent daughter to take care of him all while trying to instill the value of not having a baby at an early age & letting her near adult son do as he pleased. She was a mess & Tasha actually held the family together through all her sacrifice & "helping." Women who do things like this irk me.

@@starlightrocks7 Yes, he was a foster child. Joan adopted him, knowing he was a (very) special-needs child. He doesn't speak & he was born addicted to crack. Tasha was forced to do what the MOM signed on for. I am all for every member of the family helping out......but Tasha is not the parent.

Looking back the Mama should've never adopted that special needs child just for the children to take care of. Caring for a child is a lot of work and a special needs one is extra work.

Is it possible that the writer did it to show the struggle of taking care of a special needs child while struggling as a single parent, people keep bashing this mom in the comments as if it's a reality show, she is just following the script that she was paid to act. Back then women took on the responsibility of taking care of family members or neighbor kids inspite the fact that they themselves were struggling, it was just part of the community spirit. And as far as doing it for the money well back then the foster money was barely enough to take care of the child so I don't know if that was the case here.

In some ways ahead of its time, but in other ways "behind" it. Shows that featured realistic portrayals of working-class Black characters had their heyday in the 1970s (Good Times, Sanford and Son, What's Happening). But ever since the Cosby Show, the successful shows (sitcoms at least) became those with very "upwardly mobile" characters.

Watching this now takes me back to when I first saw it and how pissed I was at the mom. I hate parents that have kids and make the other kids responsible for them. You shouldn’t have any kids if you can’t afford them or take care of them yourself. A special needs kid is a 24 hour job and it isn’t Tasha’s responsibility. She shouldn’t be neglecting her homework and missing her childhood taking care of a kid her mom brought home on her own. She had every right to feel how she did and she wasn’t wrong for it. She can’t afford the 2 living kids she has left, then she goes and gets a slow, problematic crack baby for them to raise. She lets Andre do whatever and leaves Tasha to handle all the responsibility. No way in hell should Tasha be responsible for taking him to therapy session, feeding him or doing cuddle time. It’s ok to maybe pick him up from school every now and then, but all that stuff everyday. It ain’t like she working at a good job making lots of money. I had a friend in junior high who could never do any school activities because she had to go pick up siblings, walk them home and watch them daily and all weekend, I felt so sorry for her. The fake African bothered me, such a hypocrit con artist, I love Clifton Powell, Tina Lifford and Larenz Tate but I hated them in this show. This fake ass wanna be hard gang banger virgin before O Dogg character got on my nerves. They had good storylines, I hung in there to see Tasha, she was the star of the show for me and the real talent…..

I agree. I am all for siblings helping out, I certainly did for my little brother. I mostly enjoyed it, it made me feel good. But I also had my OWN time & Tasha didn't seem to have much of that. I knew classmates that had to babysit their siblings too often! Worse still, ones that had kid after kid after kid....& they had to help out their siblings every single day, That is terrible. Use a condom, people. Or parent your OWN kids.

Not true about Andre's character. He never wanted to be a gang banger. He only had the gun to protect himself when seeing his girlfriend. He had a hood mentality but still a good guy. Also the mother didn't let him get away with anything. I don't know how much you know about the show but she CONSTANTLY fussed and complained at him lol. Andre would lie and sneak all the time. I watched every episode when it aired. Too bad it didn't last long; I loved it.

Tasha is so annoying and funny looking . why is she always screams and yelling and the mom is such a snob and should not be in her situation another thing i think funny is the guy always talking about african this that african roots and i doubt hes ever been to Africa , Most of the Africans I have met think very poorly of African Americans
