Ted Chiang is honestly unmatched. he has, in a way, almost ruined other sci-fi for me. the way he adopts conventional sci-fi tropes and infuses them with his trademark humanistic style. ugggh it just brings me to tears.
i was so curious about how ted chiang reads to people who have read other sci-fi (i know he was beloved in the sci-fi community way before more traditional "literary" critics took note, but good to know he's something special even within the genre) :)
Hello 👋🏼 I am Wilja and a German Booktuber! I am so glad that I discovered your channel, I am a huge fan of of TED Chiang myself and happy that it is finally translated into German. I am looking forward to new videos of you 😍👍🏻
I must read Playing Indian at some point. I'm in a bit of a serious space right now, so I don't want to push myself into a violent read, but at some point, I'll read it. Thank you so much for reviewing.
Exhalation is on my TBR and now I want to go read it immediately! Also, I’d definitely recommend Tessa Dare for historical romance. I personally haven’t read much but she is definitely a standout in the genre, specifically her Girl Meets Duke series. I think if you’ll like any historical romance, it’ll be those. Great wrap-up as always! You’ve managed to add a few new things to my TBR!
Read it!! It's so good 😭 And okay, that's great to know about Tessa Dare, and thanks for that recommendation on where to start! Hopefully I'll be able to report back soon :)
I personally love your dedicated book reviews or those focusing on a few related books, but I can see how monthly wrap-ups are easier to do consistently and allow you to cover more material. Plus your monthly wrap-ups have been great too, so I can't complain. I've got to read Exhalation now that you said it will expand my humanity. I've read just the one story "Story of Your Life", which I enjoyed, but haven't read any of his other stuff yet.
Yeah, I wish I had more time to do full reviews...I think that's why I've been trying to think about how to better distribute the time I have to work on videos...hmm... But yeah, hopefully that wasn't too hyperbolic, but Ted Chiang, man! It's good stuff (and for what it's worth, I think "Story of Your Life" is good but not as good as a lot of his other stories...although that might be because I saw Arrival first and it always makes me sob, and that has maybe blunted the impact of the story itself a bit, unfairly)
I heard LeVar Burton read The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate and it immediately became a roadtrip favourite. I would really like to read the rest of his stories!
I've read a reasonable amount of historical romance, most of which is pretty forgettable, but the one author I return to time after time is Georgette Heyer for her regency romances (written from the 1920-1970s). My favourites of hers include Venetia, Regency Buck, Faro's Daughter, Lady of Quality, & Bath Tangle. They're smut free but I don't find them lacking because of that.
ah i've been waiting for your thoughts on sarah maclean because it's been a while since i read her books, and I think I read them at a point where they were (compared to what i'd read before) less frustrating on the regressive front. but as i've read more of her books and gotten more into the genre, i've just found myself less and less excited by them (especially because they seem to rely a lot on plucky heroines who are almost always right, and i find that boring for both the hero and heroine's sakes). and on a non-romance note, this is the reminder i needed that i finally need to read ted chiang
to be honest, i was really liking the first half of the book, to the point that i could overlook the kidnapping thing haha - in my limited experience with historicals, i think that if i can end up really rooting for the couple, i can overlook the more regressive aspects of story, and what was disappointing in the back half of this book was just that the hero had no personality, and i wasn't buying the vibes between the main characters. but i do want to give some of her other books a try because i did enjoy the banter in the first half of the book. but yeah, this one definitely had the plucky heroine, which i could definitely see myself getting tired of... but yes!! ted chiang is amazing, i think you would really enjoy his stuff (and i would love to hear your thoughts on it!) :)
Nice seeing this - Ted Chiang has been a revelation to me - love those books so much (but I am a science fiction fan on a big scale as you might be able to see on my channel...) - really good video though....thanks
Arrival is one of my favorite movies, so I'm definitely keen to check out Ted Chiang's books. Ah, romance and it's ability to put you in a morally compromised situation lol! If you didn't like Sarah MacLean's book, definitely stray away from Tessa Dare 😂
Historical romances are definitely something I have tried and failed at for a lot of the same reasons of the situations feeling gross. But I didn't know Tessa Dare was more rom-com-y in style, so maybe she be different enough that it'd work better?
It's a struggle! Yeah, I haven't read Tessa Dare but have heard she's maybe a good bet...I will report back soon, but good to know that maybe at a certain point it's okay to give up trying! haha

I really recommend it! Maybe listening to his stories would be a way to revisit them now that I've blown through all of them...

Ah, yes, I've heard of her! She gets mentioned a lot on historical romance podcasts haha

He's so great - do you have any other Sci-Fi recs for people who aren't super familiar with the genre but have enjoyed TC's stuff?
@@ClaireReadsBooks you might like Becky Chambers books...they're character driven and very hopeful...and beautifully written.
Thanks! I’ll check them out :)
Hii, have you read any Mhairi McFarlane books? I recently read Just Last Night & Don’t You Forget About Me and really loved both of them.
I tried one of her books once but didn't get far before it had to go back to the library, but thanks for reminding me of her and for this rec! :)
Such good earrings (and book recommendations too lol)
omfg I thought of you and Carrie when I saw this comment and then saw your name!!!!! 😹🙏🏼 baleen babyyy
I think you would like Firekeeper’s Daughter, too!!
Oooh will have to check it out!! I lost my pair of those earrings and it’s truly a tragedy :/
How can I possibly avoid Ted Chiang. Have been listening to Robert Caro's
Ted Chiang is a must!

Yes!! Arrival is amazing - I rewatched it while reading Stories of Your Life :') it really does capture the mood and tone of Ted Chiang's stories
