I think I've got the measure of these better now. They are most definitely on the bright side compared to HiFi speakers which gives them a lot of clarity and apparent detail but there isn't a lot of bass so there you go. Not a particularly good HiFi speaker IMHO unless you're mainly interested in acoustic recordings at low levels. But it seems they can easily sound too bright if played at medium to high levels.
So this is the state of modern powered monitors these days. Low distortion yes, but not the most transparent, especialy in the bass. Their bass reminds me too much of the B&W 606s and 607s
These are discontinued, but when still available were $1000 for a pair, which put them in maybe the upper mid level of home studio monitors, and certainly not pro studio quality. The only have minimal inputs and only simple shelving tone controls, and are beaten for features, if not sound quality, by many more current offerings from KRK, JBL, Focal, and others, and certainly by the upper tier of pro monitors from JBL, Genelec, and Neumann, many of which have advanced DSP now, including some that cost even less than these. They did perform very well in Amir's test of them at ASR, save for a very deep but very narrow 5db depression at around 1200hz, which is probably not audible, since it's so narrow, although he does mention that they have no deep bass at all, and need a sub. I just don't like the sound of any of these small AMTs, even though I really liked the original large dipole one from ESS. E actually has some Genelec and Focal powered monitors, and perhaps others too, and I wish he'd break some of them out for a sample
