Thinning an asparagus bed. After about ten years, my beds haven't been producing well. Upon investigation, it is clear the roots have become overgrown.
Very helpful. By way of a different approach, asparagus does very well planted in a 36 inch high mound...I know of one that has produced for over 40 years.
Kudos to anyone who's dug up old asparagus. It's like taking a shovel and trying to dig into an old, dry string mop! I had a backhoe get under a row and when he pulled up the shovel, the roots were 8' long! !!! YeOWZa!!
How did they grow on after transplanting. I thought after years when they slow down in production you have to replace the plants? I'm interested to know if this worked. Cheers
I bought some last year from Walmart and didn’t plant them. I wrapped them in a damp paper towel and placed it in the door of my refrigerator and monitored them so they did t dry out. I planted them today (3/29/24) and will see how they do. I need to dig up my 3 year old plants and add soil to my raised beds so I’m researching for the best time to do this in Zone 7.
I used to have 8 asparagus crown, I was super careful with transplanting them and 6 out of 8 died... Now I'm trying to see if I can propagate them... looks like I'll wait another year or two just to be sure...
Your smallest root ball looked like the biggest you would ever get from like home depot I feel Ile you could have at least 80 root starters you should see what Home Depot gives you compared to what you uncovered
I do it after I let them let the ferns I'll turn yellow and have been dying, and they're about to go dormant. Either then or when there's nothing above the ground from them.
Being in Canada Ontario, when’s the best time to thin out our asparagus bed. Harvest time is pretty much done now June 7/22 Should I wait till summer is over?
ever notice how most you tubers are not in "OUR" area, central Ontario, and very few ever tell us what zone they are in? My Asparagus bed hasn't multiplied like I had hoped and wanted to add more, thinking Fall is the time to plant? but everyone is saying wait till spring? What is you thoughts? If you don't mind my asking?
@@southerncomfort971I saved some seeds and planted them two years ago. I put those young " ferns" in the ground this late spring. Here in Ontario from my experience, the best time is the spring or late summer. Save your seeds
@@johnnygag1 Thank you for replying, I only had 3 seed pods for this year and none the year before, So I recently bought some crowns and I worry that leaving them inside over winter might harm them more than planting them would?
I am in a situation where I want/have to move the asparagus plants (been in ground 3 years) BUT they are already up. It is April 1 in Tennessee. I wonder if my transplant will be successful. Do I leave the freshly popped up asparagus above ground when I transplant? Or am I just killing these plants by doing it this time of year?
Just what I was looking for, thank you. I am moving an old bed of asparagus to a new location. I garden the same way if it makes it, it makes it.
Thanks..this one video is good to get me on my way. No lectures ni gotchas just do it.
Feeling confident to go ahead and succeed. Good info..

Garden fork was my Mom’s secret. She was pretty persistent .
I would think that even a garden Fork wouldn't have been any fun.
It was awful!
Just curious if you'll do an update on these? How long did it take to get new shoots and were they vigorous?
This is so helpful! Thanks so much. And you seem so nice. I really enjoyed your video.
would be helpful if you mentioned in what zone are you and when do you replant/separate them? Thank you!

You rock thanks for the great vid man!
The Martha Washington variety I found in a store had some type of wood chips for dry storage. Possibly pine?
Can you harvest from them the year after?
WHAT TIME OF THE YEAR IS BEST TO SEPARATE THEM? THANKS FOR THE SHOW AND TELL
yard farmer Feb 5, 2017 is the date when he uploaded the video.
Yard farmer, I agree with. What season is February? Where does he live??!!

Good :)
This information is useless being there is no follow up even after multiple people have asked!
