    I’ve been using my speed 4s for everything. Long, easy, and tempo runs. They have a nice pop at 6:30/min pace and still comfortable past 10 miles. No complaints

    100% agree. Speed 1&2 were inspiring shoes that wanted to go fast. Speed 3&4 are more everyday work horses. I find them sluggish and clumpy compared to 1&2. They have their place in the rotation but only as a daily easy that proves decent on the legs and HR!

    The Endorphin Speed 3's was my very first Saucony shoe. Love them. Then I got the Pro 3 for racing. Also love that shoe. I just have to be careful not to lace up the toe box to tight or I get hotspots on my pads of my outer feet. Then I got a pair of Pro 2's on clearance. I use them for Threshold and fast-paced days. Then I got the Triumph's for recovery days. Awesome shoes. And then.... then I got the Speed 4's. I was so excited when I got them, and I took them out for a 8 mile run at moderate (8:30 per mile) paces. Eww.. I got really bad hot spots on the outer pads of my feet. So, I loosened up the toe box and tied a runners knot. Some relief but still got hot spots. I was able to return them for a 1/2 size bigger. I took them out for a long run at a slower pace around 9-minute miles. They seemed ok but then I recently took them out for some fast paces and once again I am getting hot spots. I do not understand why this is happening with the Speed 4's. All my other Saucony shoes feels so great. So now I am only using them for slower paced long runs. Kind of disappointed.

    I had 2 pairs of the speed 2. Best trainer ever imo!! Got the 3 and was totally gutted. Not even going to bother with the 4. Went with boston 12s as my new speed sesh shoe. Have got the pro 3s which I love but wish the speed 2 would return. 😢

      How do the Boston 12 fit compared to the speed 3? Are they narrow or about same length etc etc

    • @darrensyzling4395
      @darrensyzling4395 7 місяців тому +2

      @@Ruffnreddyrunner I find the Boston 12 more accomodating at the toe box than the Speed 3s - from memory - I found the speed 3 a little tighter than the 4's. The Boston 12s upper isn't as comfortable as the Speeds - they are little more plush - of course they're not plush but relatively speaking. Boston's may be a little more difficult to find a lockdown in comparison to Speed 3s. I think I preferred the Speed 3s to 4s, but I'm also having fit issues with the left shoe on the 4s, pressure under the rear of the arch and discomfort on the outer forefoot. Right foot is fine, I've no idea where this is coming from, unless my foot is moving and I'm getting rubbing from some of the seams in the upper. Boston 12s are stiffer, do take some time to break-in, I'm probably more efficient in the Bostons. From talking to other people they may be the only adidas shoe I could wear - the Sens have too narrow a toebox - so the Boston is the outlier - although the Pro 3 may be similar - haven't tried that as yet.

    Nice review, thanks. Just remember that you're a semi-elite runner. Majority of us are middle or end of the pack marathoners (my fastest is sub 5:30, and i currently train to improve on my PR)...so what's slow for you is already fast for majority, so i think you can also mention that its SPEED name matches its purpose w/c is to also go fast and do tempo/long runs.

    I fully agree, this is a shoe that is very comfortable for moderate runs, distance and effort. Too wide for workouts, too floppy for speed. Not to mention the sloppy fitting upper. I do also see good efficiency in this shoe for moderate runs though, but that is the speedroll technology.

    Not finished then :) I am just a bit behind you with these at 80 miles. I do share your observation that am not always reaching for them but that's partly because have bought quite a few other daily type trainers of late (Mach 6, Rebel v4, Novablast 4 and Velocity Nitro 3 which I am using the most of these) and for faster runs hard to look past one of my many Vaporflys which TBH has always been the case. I do wonder if there is a bit of a perception thing these days. When the Speed 1 came out only the outgoing Peg Turbos I found had a similar use case and there were so few other "super" shoes you could wear for anything and not just races. I always found the material they use in the heel counter in the Speeds not the best but can't really say have had massive issues. That all said have run more miles in Speeds that any other shoe model in recent years and am sure the Speed 4 will add more to the total but I don't think for me that 1, 2 or 3 are fundamentally that different.

      @@MS33496hmm. I mean, I think it depends a bit on the way you run. I am finding that the vaporflys are a faster shoe for racing 10k for me, so perhaps if you’re buying them as a race shoe (which I guess is how they’re marketed) maybe not idea for those types of distances. Having said that I’ve run pretty fast flat out 200s in them, and I do like them as a general training shoe for say a Sunday Long Run.

    I recently picked up the Mach 6 (wide) and ES3. I prefer the Mach 6 for easy runs but the ES3 is better for faster runs and intervals, it just has a lot more pep to it. I also prefer the ES3 to my ES2, and have done more miles in the ES3 in a month than I did in my ES2s in a year, the ES3's are just so much more versatile. I don't think the ES4's a a huge upgrade to the ES3, so will stick to the ES3 which I love.

    Absolutely anazing shoe for Professional Amateur.
    Wear and tear is disappointing. I am hill striker and rubber strip at the back is wearing off really quickly. I feel there is not thah much life left in them unfortunately.
    I did 500 miles in Superblast and it had more rubber left.

    Loved the speed 3’s and put about 600km in them before putting them away. In the 24km i’ve put in the speed 4’s since they feel clunkier and firmer than the previous model but come alive somewhat at speed. Think i prefer the 3’s though.

    The forefoot outsole ISN’T wider on the speed 4. I’ve just measured my 3’s and 4’s in the same UK 9 and they are both 11.5cm at the widest point. If you feel they’re wider it’s psychological.
    The heel outsole on the 4’s are 0.3cm wider and feel a little bulkier due to the flare.
    The upper is the main difference for me, I prefer the material on the 4 and it’s very breathable but there’s a notice difference in fit. The 3’s came up wide and I had to crank the laces to get a good fit. The 4’s hug my forefoot perfectly and although there is less room in the toe box it is just right.
    Interestingly I struggle to run slow in the 4’s as a forefoot striker. The only wear I am seeing is on the toe off area which makes me question if there is a subtle shift in the geometry further forward. I can run easy in the 3’s but the 4’s will be more of a daily/tempo/track shoe for me.

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  7 місяців тому +1

    I have heal issues with it but nothing to do with heal rub, the piece of support foam around the heal plus the insole causes a lump that you wont feel of you land flat but as I land on the outside of my heal this has caised an injury, initially thought it was because I was training harder but it gets better running in other shoes and gets really agrivated in the speed4 and never had any problems before I started using them.
    I've done about 70miles in it, as you say it's verry efficient, I liked it for speed intervals too but it's off the rotation.

  • @michaelcaricoo

    100% agree. It's not a bad shoe objectively but for a shoe with the name of "speed" it isn't particularly fast compared to some of its competitors. I guess for me if they had never had it really light and nimble then maybe I wouldn't mind as much? But they did, the Speed 1/2 were much faster and it got downgraded

    It looks good and I think they probably improved it a bit over v3 but I will skip v4. I still have 2 pairs of v2, new in box. I am about to retire my last pair of Speed 1. I have delegated my Speed 3 for daily short milage run. I didn't like the shoe that much and it runs a bit shorter for me, not leaving enough space in front. I wish I had ordered v3 1/2 size up. Durability of the rubber outsole in v3 is also less. So, I don't think I will reach the same milage I do in v1/v2 in v3.
    I am actually interested in checking out TYR Valkrie Speedworks. They seem to have used Speed 2 as a starting point but adapted to lower drop and wider toebox. See if they can send you a pair (and their racer, Valkrie Elite Carbon) for testing.

    Took mine brand new to Cyprus on holiday couple weeks ago to test them out and for me at my age (63) and pace I’m sure now where they sit.
    Slower pace ( 9 min mile ) no good. Clunky and uninspiring and would much rather be in my Triumph 20’s. 8 min pace or under and personality of the shoe changes completely. The plate and midsole start to work for you rather than against you (which was my feeling at slower pace) and the shoe comes alive. I also think at the quicker pace it’s more lively than V3 but still not a patch on the unique V1.
    For me the V3 was more versatile and had a wider range and I got more use out of them than I think I will with the V4 which I’ll probably only reach for on race day ( 10K or half marathon)
    Thanks for the video.

    Sole on one shoe split completely half way along at the pivot point where the foam does not have a rubber sole after 60kms. Have had pairs of Speed 1/2s and loved them as a fast/race shoe. These didn’t feel the same sadly and with the issue I’ll be steering away from these.

    Morning Andy, have sparingly used the 4, but still have a chunk of miles to run out in my three yet. My biggest gripe with the 4 to be honest isn't the way it performs, its more the cost comparison to the competition... before it was a 5-10 more you could justify it as it was leaps and bounds better than whatever else was out there, now is it 40 better than the boston12? Mach 6? I don't think so... Needs to be a value proposition as well as can it do x y n z

    Retired my Speed 3 at over 750km, but most had to be done with moderate and short runs, due to heel lift. I went and got 2 pairs of NovaBlast V3's after the V4 was released. And the NB V3 does everything I want it to from recovery down to 5k pace and even top end strides. Asics heels seem to work extremely well for me. I'm done with Saucony, their heel designs just don't work for me.
    I find Adidas are the same, extremely poor heel designs, which promote heel lift. I gave away my Boston 12's at 100km to someone that they worked for....just tired of heel discomfort.

    Saucony has turned into a bit of a joke to be honest. The shoes are great but the Speed 3 and Speed 4 were totally the wrong direction for the shoe to go in, and they didn't take any feedback onboard. Similarly the Pro 1 and 2 were great, but the 3 was pretty trash.
    Now they release the version 4 which costs a crazy amount of money, £180 for a daily trainer and the Pro and Elite are ridiculously expensive. Won't be buying anything new from saucony again, only buy the old versions on huge sales.

      My question is why runtubers are pushing so many shoes and needlessly overblown rotations? Only pros have 10 pair of shoes and only because they get them for free. Normal runners don't need, and don't even have the space for so many pairs. Not even talking about the overengineered plated superstack crap in daily trainers that is injury waiting to happen...

    • @fergusdenoon1255
      @fergusdenoon1255 7 місяців тому

      @@kylestephens9593 well that's certainly a perspective, you don't actually have to buy every shoe they try out, they try them out so you dont have to, so you know a little more about the shoe you may buy from their experience and the experience others have in the comments, so you don't end up buying 5 pairs of shoes until you get one that's actually good, and those previous 5 pairs aren't just sitting in your closet doing nothing but taking up space.
      also, the primexstrung is the shoe I wear if I want to stay injury free...
      also, bought the speed4 for £130, not so bad.

      I have to say... Saucony are my favourite all round brand... yes this one is a bit "meh" and I appreciate your comment about prices... but I admire the fact that, although they produce a lot of shoes that overlap (like all brands), you could easily build a solid 3 shoe rotation and they'd all be really good. For me, you just have to look at Nike and see how great their race shoes are but how poor the rest of their lineup is to realise that Saucony produce "across the board" for the consumer and not just the "top end" racing product. Its all personal preference as well!

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  7 місяців тому +3

      Respect for your comment... in reality you only need a 3 shoe rotation... easy / speed / race... I am fortunate that I get sent shoes to test so I do have more than most people... but if I wasnt in this situation, then I agree 3 is enough. You can of course have a wider rotation and if the money is there, I wouldnt be able to resist!
