    AI doesn't have to be smarter than you to be of use. For example, if you hire an assistant to help prepare mixes to help you speed up your workflow/results (and hopefully get better results along the way because you're focusing on the mix now more than the 'tech stuff' around the mix) one would say that the assistant isn't useless, even though they aren't the mix artist that you are.
    Same thing for AI. If it can help reduce extra clicks, extraneous thoughts, distractions and help you focus more on the "Art of the Mix", then it doesn't have to be smarter or better than you to be of use.

    Great review, thank you. About 8% of all males have a red-green color blindness (like me) and it's quite annoying that manufacturers especially looooove these colours for spectograms and all kinds of color coded presentations. For 8% of us it all looks the same, so the Reveal plugin loses about 8% customers just because they didn't add color customization to it 🤷‍♂️

    • @petefaders
      @petefaders 3 роки тому +2

      Gain compensation on something that changes dynamics is an odd idea to me. They have to pick a method like LUFS or peaks to make it work, which is not really accurate to give you the "same" level. We're are mix engineers, we can set the volume ourselves.

    • @negvey
      @negvey 3 роки тому +1

      @@petefaders its a good point, I have a different view of understanding, I like to control using only faders, because they control dynamic range not loudness

    • @Patrick-857
      @Patrick-857 3 роки тому

      @@petefaders I agree and disagree. I agree, what even is the "same" volume before and after compression? You would have to first decide what measurement you are using, and that's arbitrary, and volume is subjective to begin with. I disagree that it isn't useful if they can actually design an algorithm that works well, which I'm doubtful about, because the whole idea is to prevent the user being mislead by their own senses, that perceive louder as better, a classic problem in audio engineering. The problem now of course is you are relying on an algorithm to decide what a comparative volume even is, and then making mixing decisions under the assumption that you don't have to worry about "louder is better l" bias. Meanwhile the algorithm may be leading you astray and lulling you into a false sense if security, rather than you being vigilant and checking to make sure you aren't allowing more volume to lead you to believe a particular decision actually sounds better.

    • @Patrick-857
      @Patrick-857 3 роки тому

      @@petefaders Also peaks is a good one, of for example you are using a limiter to get the absolute maximum loudness out of the available headroom. It would be a nice feature in certain circumstances to have a limiter that will simply not allow the output to exceed a certain threshold. But who knows how this plugin works.

    I think Sonible is possibly the most underestimated company making plugins right now. I use Smart Comp and EQ every project. Engineers won’t be out of a job though. Even with tools that make things this simple, it’s still a mountain of minutiae to sort through and countless creative decisions to be made in making a song sound it’s best. There’s no “one way” to do any of it, so the computers are always going to make helpful suggestions that save time but I don’t think they’ll ever be able to mix a song to its fullest potential. That takes taste and artistic sensibility which is something you can’t program

    I noticed the CPU usage of one FAST plugin is high, like 30% CPU. I could load 6 random 3th party plugins and stay around 13% CPU usage. (tested this multiple times and I have around 600 3th party plugins). Tested with the DAWS Reaper, Mixcraft and Mulab, all same result. I asked support and they say it's because the FAST plugins use AI. But I think AI is used only during the analyse phase, not during performance. I understand the FAST limiter has a function to reduce resonance and indeed needs more CPU, but when I turn this off the CPU usage is the same. Also when I disable the plugins, there is still CPU usage. Some plugins stop using the CPU when there is no activity. So I think there is an issue here. I wonder how well the windows version would work considering Focusrites not so good reputation on the stability of their ASIO drivers. I read a lot of horror stories about them not beeing able to code a good stable driver. That’s why I choose a Steinberg interface over a Focusrite. But I guess coding a plugin is less difficult then developing stable drivers.

    Thanks for this review! I can't understand how FAST is any different than similar bundles from Waves or Izotope? What's the advantage of having these tools all from 1 vendor? Unified UI or something more? Perhaps I'm bombarded with advertising and susceptible to wild claims, but it seems Neutron, Ozone and AudioLens from Izotope might be leading the technology ..... no?

    The compressor looks like what Smart Comp does...
    I agree Reveal isn't straightforward in its benefit and the lack of "buy" option rules it out for me.

      Yep, I'd rather pay £100 up front than be tied into a year+ long contract, even if it's slightly cheaper, it's entirely psychological, but enough to rule it out.

    The real sculpting is in the engineers skill. It is their signature that breathes life into the music not linear algorithms. A true artist will want a true engineer to complete their masterpiece, not zeros and ones.

    Looks amazing, but the subscription scheme kills it for me, I've be happy to pay £100 upfront rather than be tied into (another !!) monthly outgoing even if it's slightly cheaper . . . if I could buy this today I would have, but because I can't I'm really happy with Sonible/Gullfoss/BabyAudio.

    Subscription (NOPE on principle) or more than €300 for the three, as no bundle offer now. Not value for money for me. I think they have priced themselves out here. I expect the price to drop. 🧡

    Hey man. Personally I don't think that FAST compressor is very revolutionary. Ableton's stock compressor has the exact same visual reference and automatic make-up gain - maybe I'm missing something? The EQ is pretty cool, but I fear people may end up mixing with their EYES and not their EARS. Cool video.

    Why does the compressor not have a sidechain, or am I missing something? I downloaded the demo and like it, but I cant select a SC on the comp.
