This is exactly the kind of niche content I would have never guessed I needed on this platform. Fishing was, and still is, a core part of me and my bond with my father, as it was also core to my distant relatives before me. Understanding more of fishing history, I believe, brings me closer to them in some way.
My first fishing gear was Zebco 33 black combo which I bought from Academy. On my second fishing trip, I caught a 7-lbs catfish, it took me more than 20 mins to get the fish out of the water. I was amazed both the rod and mono did not break. It had run smoothly for a little bit more than 1 month, then the mono line got stuck. Now I have 6 rods with spin reels and cast reel. I replaced the spin caster with a bait caster, and used the new combo for casting practice.
I netted a 37.5 lb. Flathead Catfish caught in a pay lake for a friend. He was using an 'off the shelf' Zebco 33 ,with the pre spooled10 lb. 'blue Stren' (1982 ish) . This fish fought for about 25 minutes, numerous, powerful runs. For what it is, that's purely amazing. (You are not 'under gunned' with a 33) God bless ! 🙏 🐟 🇺🇸
Great story! I grew up in north Tulsa with Zebco reels in the house. My aunt and uncle built reels at Zebco. My father used the original product, the clock for the bomb, with his cable tool rig in the Oklahoma oil fields.
Awesome video!!!. I would love to see the History of some more of the Great American Fishing Companies... Shakespeare, Pflueger, Johnson and Hedon. Keep up the great videos!!!!
Count me among those who still has their very first Zebco reel, a Zebco One, from the late 80's. Still buttery smooth and in perfect working order, ready to be passed on to the next generation.
I found your channel looking for videos about old steel fishing rods. I plan some fishing videos that include history bits about the history of the lake and old equipment. I like your stuff and wish you the best of luck in your channel. You are off to a good start for sure and I am subscribed.
Thank you! You know, the first spinning reel wasn't invented until the very early 1900s, and baitcasting reels had been around for much longer. The spinning reels caught on pretty quick though, but I imagine more people would still be using baitcasting reels.
Thank you! Yeah with the audio, I tried putting an “old-timey” microphone effect on it, and it may have just ended up making it sounds like a bad mic haha. Thanks for a heads up, I’ll have to tighten that up!
I think its interesting that a reel started as an affordable but high tech solution to real world fishing problems, is now thought of as a cheap beater reel for kids and beginners. And now "real fisherman" have gone backwards in a sense because we use expensive and over engineered versions of older style reels.
To be honest, the history of Zebco is interesting. However, I bought a Zebco 33 not too long ago and I wasn't all that impressed with it. Perhaps the original ones were better. Mine was very noisy and, to be honest, I didn't like the reel being pre-loaded with line because it could develop a "memory" if on the reel for too long.
That's fair! With moving it inside I tried to strike a balance between the nostalgic aesthetic and different ways to keep it engaging. Thanks for the feedback, I'll definitely take it into consideration for further episodes :)

Around 6:40, you said “even more smoother” which is an insane thing to say. Great video though, keep em coming.

Thank you, I appreciate it! Will for sure cover those eventually :)
Never would’ve thought zebco of all brands would’ve been owned by so many different people
I forgot to include it in the video, but they actually got bought out by Rather Outdoors in 2021 as well! 😂
Wow!! Fantastic job.. I got my first 202 in 1974…. My mom had the 33 and we weren’t allowed to look at it..
thanks for the education.👍
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Another great video!!
Thank you, I appreciate it!!
Fascinating!
Thanks Andy!!
Great video! Idea, history / progression of fishing lures?
Thank you! I for sure want to do some videos about lures :)

I can remember talking my mom into taking me to the zebco plant. I live in Tulsa Oklahoma can't remember much I was just about 6. I am 56 now.
Thanks for sharing, what a cool story!
Great video yet again man!
With the ice season approaching any plans on anything ice related?
It’s on the list for sure!
Great video!
Thank you!
This is great! Being that winter is coming, perhaps a history on ice fishing?
Thank you! I like your thinking… 👀
Awesome video. At the time when Zebco made their first spin cast reels, were spinning or baitcasting reels used by more fishermen?

Hey man, great vid! One tip: I would look into getting some lavalier microphones to improve audio quality. Much luck :)
Thank you!

My cousin Brandon held the record at Clayton Lake in New Mexico for trout with a Zebco 202
Gteat video🔥
Thank you, appreciate it!

Back then baitcasters didn't have freespool.
Now if you can just figure out how to stop my bait from being stolen lol

please go back to the vintage style content

It sounds like you might have a touch of TDS, don't worry you'll be okay.
Haha, was just trying to make a light hearted election joke I thought anyone could enjoy. Thanks for watching!
