    I use Microns a lot. Started using them far before tiktok. They’re some of my favorite fineliners simply for their range in sizes for the type of pen they are. I’d say that they’re worth the price, yet I’m aware of tiktok’s weird obsession with some of the most expensive art supplies on the market (Caran d’Ache pencils, Copic markers, Winsor and Newton paint, etc). I’m sure that there’s a cheaper alternative that produces the same effect!

    • @jinx5337

      For me, I'm in the Uk so windsor and newton even the professional gouache that I use isnt stupidly expensive, but I totally agree, tik tok has this habbit of pushing either really really good and expensive art supplies or really bad ones. like the paint puck thing for example, I cannot get that in the Uk without paying a lot and i mean a lot of money.

    • @ablancer3582

      Prismacolor fineliners are also really good and reliable. While my microns may dry up in a year or two, I've had some of my Prisma color pens for longer.
      Microns are really reliable. And with watercolor, honestly the paint matters, but I'd say what matters more (and what is most expensive) is the paper. I just started buying quality paper and I love it. I have some of the shittiest watercolor paper money can buy and In stuck with it by accident. I normally get Canson because it's great and affordable. Got a cheaper brand recently and I immensely regret. Weirdly same brand does make ok marker paper, but I don't use markers too much

    The sakura microns are great but personally they didnt last very long, and this is coming from someone who treats their supplies VERY well. They're great while they last but keep in mind that they're quite sensitive, don't try to layer them on top of other media like paint (dry obviously) or prismacolors.

      Yep. I was so disappointed years ago, when I still did mostly traditional art, how easily they seemed to start bleeding when I used markers. Before that, I had always seen people use them like so (sketch, lineart, colour) so I wasn't expecting what happened to happen. Nowadays I tend to use mostly other pens for lineart, not sure about the brand but I they're nothing famous or too expensive and I just buy them from my country's book store chain (idk how common it is to sell art/office supplies in bookstores but they do here). They dry quicker, bleed way less, and last longer. I rarely use the sakura microns I have now 😅

    I used to think that rotrings were the worst because I had an uncle that went to college for drafting and architecture. He used those rotring isograph pens religiously for everything he ever did, so he had a junk box full of them. When I was around 10 or 12 I took a handful of those junk pens thinking I could be a great artist if I had these fancy sounding pens.
    Of course they were empty, jammed, dry, or broken in some way since they came from a junk box. Rather than connecting the dots, I just assumed that all technical pens were terrible for years. I eventually bought one on accident while I was getting fineliners and decided I wasn't going to waste it so I put it in my pocket journal. The instant I used it, I set it with my main art supplies and have loved them ever since.

  • @johndododoe1411
    @johndododoe1411 Рік тому +381

    Those extremely thin fineliners used to be sold in specialist shops for doing blueprints with precise details. The official standards for official blueprints require specific line widths for specific things, and draftsmen like to use sizes that scale to the next size when photocopying up or down 1 paper size.

    Side note: the Sakura fine liners dry out very easily if your not careful. I press down a bit hard while lining and it always seemed to dry out quicker rather than when I didn’t. There’s also no way of preventing bleed when working with watercolor around it- if your looking for a cheap alternative I’d also suggest
    “2 pack s-gel 0.7 fine tip sharpie pens no bleed ($5-3)”
    They are what works best for me, and what I often use in my videos.

  • @MermaidMakes
    @MermaidMakes Рік тому +13

    The thing about those microns is you really want to be careful to not press down on them. You need a very light hand (hard for me, I have a very heavy hand when I draw ) and you're going to need a few of them to finish one larger piece. I love them, they are fun to use, but I wanted to put that out there for people who have never used them.
    I switched to reusable copic just because you can change the nibs before the ink runs out. With those I don't think you can replace the nibs and a lot of the time they will wear down before the ink runs out.

    • @ZijnShayatanica
      @ZijnShayatanica Рік тому +3

      Ooh, thank you for that last recommendation!! I'm also a big heavy-handed, but I tend to be precious w/ those pens. But it's awesome to know there's a refillable option!

    • @MermaidMakes
      @MermaidMakes Рік тому +3

      @@ZijnShayatanica I’m glad I could help someone! The initial price for the refillable copic is a bit more expensive, but not unreasonably so. After you get it the nib price comes out to about the same as you would spend on the disposable microns…I think actually even less expensive after a while, because once a nib is ruined on a whole pen you can’t use it even if the ink is still good, and you can’t even take the ink cartridge out to use in another pen!
      Happy arting!

    • @baisale36
      @baisale36 Рік тому +21

      @@mothratemporalradio517 the cold press grounds is essentially the primer, but when it comes to the price, it just depends on what paper you get, and what you’ll use it for.
      Me for example, while the grounds may be the same price as the paper I use, I use watercolour for my backgrounds only, and work with pencils and paint everywhere else, so it would be helpful to have just that back area be for watercolour than to change the medium of what I’m working on.

    • @mothratemporalradio517

    Yesss! Micron pens for the win! My Most Favorite Pens ever! I was introduced to them by an artist friend way back in the early 2000's. I have all the colors and wish that they made more of them in the teensy tip. I've worn out so many of those 005 doing teensy little details on ACEOs. :)
    Kneaded erasers are another awesome tool, no more eraser crumbles on your art, and they are fun to squish.
    I didn't know about the watercolor ground, that is pretty cool. I worked at an art store years ago, I miss seeing the cool products that come out.

      That's suspicious, I have cheaper, less quality fineliners and they had been going strong for almost a year, supposing you didn't left them open for a long time then it's possible the store where you bought them sold you used or almost dry pens

      It sucks that lots of people have that experience!! For that reason, I was kind of hesitant to buy them, but I have found they keep just fine. I've found storing them horizontally is the recommendation. I also keep them in a plastic bag when I'm not using them, hoping that will prevent air from drying them out? IDK if it's necessary, but it makes me feel better! Lmao

    Just a tip for anyone interested in the micron pens: they are great... Until they break, and they break fast. If you tend to be forceful when writing/drawing, I would seriously reconsider. They are great while they work though

    you can put the cold press layer, sure. but if your material is non-archival, whatever you work on (especially if you made it with such heart or meticulousness), will eventually succumb to damage and mold.

    FUN FACT!! Pigma Microns are not soluble in water (based on my own testing), and as such, could be painted over with watercolor/gouache/ink wash/etc. without ruining the original ink linework underneath!!

    For anyone whose like me and enjoys drawing incredibly tiny details, Microns are amazing, but copic is the only fineliner I know that has a true 0.03. I like to use both since copic is a little more expensive than micron, but nothing beats copic's 0.03.

    I’ve learned with the pens you can make trees by using the finest one 005 as the out side of it and gently shake your hand and once you do that color it in with the thicker pens

  • @katieelisabeth6036
    @katieelisabeth6036 Рік тому

    Just a note on the micron fineliners, especially the 005 ones, it’s quite easy for the nib to be pressed in or damaged. You just have to be delicate with them. If you do any sort of stippling or drawing technique that may damage the nib easily, the copic multi liner SP pens have replaceable nibs and ink. It’s a bit more of an upright cost but it stops you wasting a good micron pen when you’ve only had it 3 weeks (speaking from experience..)
