  • Here is a great video comparing spinning vs bait casting reels, hopefully this video will help determine which one is best for you, however I personally believe they both have there place and I make a point to use both regularly. Here are a few points that I touch on in the video:
    Spinning Reels
    - Great for beginners
    - Great for light baits/down sizing
    - You are able to hear the beautiful drag when you hook a mogan
    - You can achieve long distance casting with spinning reels using little effort.
    - Spinning reels give you the ability to switch handles to right or left handed with a quick unscrewing of the handle.
    Spinning reel cons
    - The one con that really takes the cake is the occasional line twist.
    Bait Casting Reels
    - You can use heavier fishing line
    - You have more control
    - Better Accuracy
    - Bait casting rods often times have greater back bone allowing for great leverage
    - Bait casters are not recommended for beginners
    - You can stop baits on precise targets
    - Bait casters are low profile and makes for great comfort ability
    - Many of the new bait casters have very high gear ratios allowing for super fast line retrieval
    - Big time drags, some of the new reels have 30lbs of drag
    Bait Caster Cons
    - Back lashes/birds nest
    - Mute drag

Never understood.....spinning reels crank on left side. bait casting right side.... watch the pro's...they cast with their right hand.......switch the rod to the left hand....crank...then when they get a fish put the rod BACK in the right hand and bring the fish in with the left. I now have 3 bait casters ALL with left hand crank just like my spinning reels, makes more sense...cast with rod in my right hand crank with left pick the fish with my left hand rod just stay's in right hand. So if you've only used spinning, now want to try a bait caster they do make left hand cranks.

Spinning reels are also cheaper. A $30 spinning reel is totally sufficient and will perform just fine and will catch just as much fish as a $200 reel. A cheap baitcaster on the other hand, will just give you backlashes, poor casting distance, and a non pleasurable fishing experience.

I finally bought a baitcaster after using spinning reels for years. At this point the only advantage I see so far is that I don't have to flip the bail anymore to cast. Also it looks really cool. That's about it.

Anyone who knows how to use a baitcaster knows that it is better than spinning reel. The only problem with baitcasters is that they cannot cast light weight lures.

Good info for some one thinking to go with a bait caster after 30 yrs of a spinner. Great vid! Like how you kept it simple and informative with out really picking sides.

Great video. Basically it tells me to develop my skills with a spinning rod and pick up the bait caster later. I haven't fished in 40 years and starting over again. Thanks Joshua.
