      Tom great video and thanks for the research on this. Just a quick question on if the FS.COM 80m copper SFP (87588) will work with Ubiquiti's UDM-Pro and USW-24-POE PRO switches or just stick with Ubiquitis SFP's? Or perhaps if you could show the comparison? I'm running a all copper upliinks and some are over 30m. Thanks.

      The FS.com Transceiver you ordered was the Cisco compatible one (IE not generic)? In the past, I have ordered the Ubiquiti compatible FS module. I see that the 10GBASE-T do not have that option this time around.

      In reply to myself, I went with the generic version for compatibility. It works in my USW-PRO-24. I did have a little trouble getting it working with my 2.5GBASE-T. I had to set Link speed of the switch port from "Autonegotiation" to "2.5 Gbps FDX". The computer connected to it has a Realtek ethernet port. The ethernet cable is maybe 2 meters long. I tried another ethernet cable but that did nothing with Autonegotiation.

    10GBase-T components require anywhere from 2 to 5 watts per port at each end of the cable to do 100m as per the spec (depending on the distance of the cable). SFP+ ports are rated for 1-1.5w max based on the mode. Some switches/SFP's will do slightly more so your results may vary.

    Something I wanna add to this, if you own the Ubiquti 16-XG which has I think 12 x SFP+ ports, they only allow you to insert 4 of these 10BASE-T SFP+ adapters. They do use too much energy / release too much heat. So check the manual of your device before buying any. In the manual of the 16-XG it specifically has this warning for these 10Gb adapters and not for the 1Gb ones.

      It's actually not true. I have XG-16 and currently using 10 SFP+ filled with 10G RJ45 Transceivers. No issues at all, been this way for more than a year.

      @@teddyc81 You're running it out of spec that's all, check the manual etc - Also these transceivers have differing power consumption level. Some of the 10Gb ones only work over lengths of

    I always install full heatsinks over the sfp cage with thermal glue on every switch i own. It really helps with cooling the sfp modules and i have noticed 10-15c drop on each sfp module. When i have low amount of ports used i space them out .

      Do you have a link to the heatsinks and the thermal glue you use?
      I assume those numbers are with active cooling in the switch case too?
      Would testing with heatsinks and normal thermal paste initially before glueing them be a good idea to see how big pf a difference it makes? 😀

    200m on S+RJ10 is not a typo, just has to be at specific speeds and to specific targets (1G / 2.5G, S+RJ10 to S+RJ10). 10G is still 30m to any targets. The exact supported length for each speed/counterpart is listed in the brochure on the module's Support & Download page.

      The max CAT6a distance is only 100M, so what cable are they using to get 200M?

      @@LAWRENCESYSTEMS 100M is the official recommended maximum length for CAT6a (indeed any Cat) defined by ANSI / TIA-568, yes. However there are unofficial implementations that are built to exceed that standard such as Paige Electric's GameChanger cable which is UL-verified to 200m.

      @@LAWRENCESYSTEMS According to the brochure - 200M distance attainable at 2.5 Gbps speed between two S+RJ10 modules (Cat 5e/6 STP). 100M at 5Gbps (Cat 5e/6) and 30M at 10Gbps (Cat 6/7).

    Mikrotik and those 200 meters - if you look at the specs of the adapter (in the brochure), you'll find that two of these connected together with CAT5e/6 can do 200 meters on 1Gig, 170 meters with CAT5e/6 on 2.5Gig, 200 meters with CAT5e/6 STP on 2.5Gig, 100 meters with CAT5e/6 on 5Gig and those 30 meters on CAT6 10Gig.
    It's Mikrotik so it's confusing as always. But worth it all the way. :-)

    I run a couple of 30m SFP RJ-45 transceivers between my server and my desktop. The server is in the basement and cat 6 cable runs from the server to a patch panel, then from there up through my attic back down to a port in my wall, and then to my desktop. The total run length is about 25m. That 25m includes stranded patch cables at both ends of the run and cat6 couplers/jacks. I factored in 5m of loss for those to account for them. I was aware of the 30m limit on most 10G RJ-45 SFP modules when I designed my network. It runs fine.

      Was gonna say the same thing. If you have sfp+ devices and are going to buy transevers and need some long cables why would you not just use fiber.

    Yeah I doubt most people have more than 98 feet of cat6 or 6a cable runs in their house (I'm sure some do) from floor to floor so these would be more ideal then running fiber in houses already built and possibly damaging the fiber when wall fishing. Curious which revision these have on them you should be able to see in the Ubiquiti switch I'm not sure about the smaller one you had for testing though. Overall good review, keep up the good content.

    If the copper is so problematic in the length sense then the optic is the way to go. Luckily I did not even consider copper for my network and went for the SM-fibers instead.

    I was considering the FS.com LR modules but went for the Ubiquiti-branded 30m modules instead (because we have Ubiquiti switches) and ended up having the same issues you mention here.
    The 80m-rated modules are only available for Cisco hardware from what I could see. Would they would in a Gen 2 USW Pro 24 PoE anyway? I couldn’t tell from the video if you used them in the USW

    Slightly confused here ... at one end you had the Microtek + SFP adapter up to 30m or FS up to 90m .... but what’s on the other end and why didn’t it have an impact on the 30m/90m? I assume it’s a 10Gb card in a PC but why isn’t it a limiting factor compared to another better/worse 10Gb card?

      The Unifi switch since it has 10G RJ45 ports that can do 100m according to spec (at least with Cat6a)

    I'm wondering if the new FS RJ45 SFP+ module that says the power is less than 1.8W: SFP-10G-T-100.
    Do you have any of these SFPs to test them? I'm interested especially for the temperature. I have a Zyxel XMG1915-10E switch which performs very well with optical SFP on 10GbE, but I want to use my RJ45 infrastructure. Because is a passive cooling switch I'm looking for low power SFP+.

    Interestingly both 30 and 80m versions claim same 2.5W power consumption, I actually suspected power to be the reason for them to be limited to 30m so that you can put more of them with lower distance and power consumption, seems not, just cheaper?

    Were you going to/from the same brand of SFP+ 10GBaseT transceivers? Or using the Ubquiti as the 10GBaseT control?
    Cause I easily get greater range over copper with the same Mikrotik (and over cat5e), but I always match brands of transceivers at each end. If you read carefully in the spec sheets, at least for the Mikrotik, you'll see the rated range is different if you use the same transceivers at each end vs with mixed vendors.

    Just use RJ45 cat 8 cable to the SFP plus charge a 45 and no problems I mean they handle 40 gigabits at like 307 ft so I mean if you add they can handle 10 gig even farther so

      The problem is most likely not the cables, but rather the SFP+ to RJ45 adapters, and more specifically that they don't provide enough power for providing signal over the distance of 30 meters. If I remember correctly, SFP+ to RJ45 adapter is not technically a part of the specification for SFP and it usually draws more power than running a DAC-cable or fiber cables, thus why it won't support longer cable runs.
      By the way, if you watch the video with Dan Barrera which Tom mentions in the video, you will learn that Cat 8 supports 40Gbps over a distance up to 30 meters (approx. 100 feet) and 10Gbps up to 100 meters (approx 328 feet).

    high speed networking equipment is coming down in price these days! you can pick up a used 32 port 100gbit switch for under $500 nowadays. great for future proofing while still being able to lower the ports speed to 40g, 25g, 10g, etc for use now with cheaper NICs.

      I posted in more detail in another comment but if you check the brochure for this product you will find that 30m is the rated maximum for the S+RJ10 at 10G. 200m is only possible between two S+RJ10 running at 2.5G.

    Can I use any sfp+ rj45 adapters on the pfsense 1u 7100. My inbound internet connection is Ethernet, but the pfsense only does 10gig on the two SFP+ ports.

    Ouch, I just bought a transceiver from Amazon and didn't notice the 30M rating. I'm not going to be exceeding that though. How would you recommend testing it to make sure the module is a good one and I'm not getting a lot of errors?

      I would suggest to hook up a 30M cable, run an internal Ping test and set the Line under heavy load with something like Iperf at the same time. Should be good enough if you dont loose Any packets within 10-30 Minutes.

      Make sure to check your interface stats for errors and dropped packets as well.

    I have a cat5e already run about 450 feet so it has trouble delivering the full gigabyte speed sometimes it does, but mostly not. Do you think a 100m sfp module would help give it a boost and make it more likely to stay at full gigabyte?

      With that type of distance you would need a fiber run cat 5e is rated for 100 meters max.

      Not at all, the opposite. You should run fiber or use a wireless point-to-point bridge for that distance.

      I have cat 5e runs in my place. Easily supports gbit. 10Gbit can be supported up to 35m (incl patch leads) - I forget where I read that.
