I feel really bad for Melisa Gilbert having played this role. She had some really big shoes to fill, and everyone was familiar with her when this movie was released, which makes it that much harder to watch. Patty Duke was basically unknown when she made the original in 1962, so when everyone saw her performance, we barely new her as a TV character and therefore didn't know what to expect. Her portrayal of Helen Keller will never, ever be topped.
Right 100 % agree with you.But Patty duke played in a theatre before she performed in Arthur Penn's movie the role of Helen keller. She and Ann bancroft produced on a stage at Broadway almost every night for 2 years and Patty started to be Helen at the age of 12 which makes a huge difference .She had this role under her skin and was an excellent stage actress. No comparison with Melissa; But it will never be topped absolutely!
Frenchie séverine Indeed. If memory serves me Duke won an academy award at the age of ten for the Miracle Worker. And Anne Bancroft, her teacher in the movie i think won best supporting actress. Did you know Anne Bancroft(god rest her soul) was Italian American? Like lots of actors and entertainers she chose a sobriquet or pseudonym instead of using her real name.
I'm part Italian and i never knew she was Italian until after her death at 75. She is one of my favorite actresses. She was also famous for "the graduate" movie. I am not ethnocentric but i am sick and tired of my fellow Americans stereotyping Italian actors as either mafia, sex maniacs, having a dumb nyc accent, etc. Most americans like stereotyping and they love actors like DeNiro who is ok at playing a crazy person or hitman but comes nowhere the versatility of Bancroft, Arman Asanti, Leonardo DiCaprio, etc. Like most Italian Americans we hate the mafia. I despised the way "Godfather" movies glamorized the mafia. And for about 20 years now there is really no Italian mafia left in america. Its become "equal opportunity" lol, organized crime is spread out over many ethnicities now. But really as long as you have a war on drugs you are going to have high crime and violence, not by the users but by the cartels who literally kill each other and kill innocents to gain market share. there's a great police organization called LEAP, Law Enforcement against Prohibition. they believe and its been proven in some countries if addicts and users get their fix at a clinic, its easier to gradually come off, and most of all the violent crime rate plummets when the government allows medical distribution and rehab....I'm also Polish-Russian American on my mothers side. jd male dissident american(I hope and pray for the fall of the US empire and the restoration of a free US republic that is a peaceful, loving, equal, contributor member of the world's family of nations)
That was an amazing accomplishment by an incredible person, Anne Sullivan, or as they say "Miracle Worker". She was a saint to have so much patience and kindness to teach someone with 2 major disabilities. It's hard enough to communicate to someone with 1 of those disabilities that is was a miracle to get through to Helen who was deaf and blind. It was an equally amazing accomplishment for Helen Keller to go from basically being a rag doll to graduating from such a prestigious college at the age of 24. I still can't believe that she could even function as a regular human being with her disabilities. Great story and ending for two incredible people.
Agreed... I first saw The Miracle Worker in eight grade... I read the book with my English class then we watched the movie... the 1962 version with Party Duke as Helen... I knew a lot of Helen Keller a couple before that because in fifth grade I did a project where I had to be a wax figure from someone throughout history and I was Helen... I digress, Patty Duke as Annie Sullivan in this 1979 remake isn’t as well acted Melissa Gilbert however should not have portrayed the role as Helen a.)she’s too tall b.)too well known by this point In the 2000 remake with Hallie Eisenberg as Helen is another story... Hallie was only eight at the time when the movie was to come out and she did an excellent job though I was only 9 months old when the 2000 remake came out
It's so hard to choose which version was better with Patty Duke in. I liked her performance in the 1962 version as Helen, and in this one as Anne Sullivan because she did a splendid job as both.
Annie was blind, but she had nine operations to repair her eyesight. However, she had dark glasses because she was sensitive to light. Helen wears her glasses, her hat, and jacket when she studies her things when they first meet. Hope that answers your question.
Am I the only one who thinks this is hard to watch with Melissa Gilbert? Don't get me wrong, I love her and always will, I think she's an fantastic actress who did great as a small child in Little house on the prairie. But everyone knew her as Laura Ingalls at this time and not only she's far to old for this role, everyone knew Patty Duke as Helen Keller. She did so great, I think her performance couldn't be topped.
kinda cool that patty duke played helen when she was young and is now playing Anne Sullivan! I've never seen that version or this one the whole way through, ive only seen a more recent on that was made in 1999 or so I think.
Only people, more than likely young people, who have not seen the original masterpiece, (1962), could possibly think this remake has any degree of quality whatsoever. ~ As television presentations go, not even up to the calibre of Little House. . . I strongly recommend seeing the original classic.
The original is the best.Patty Duke was HELEN she was full of rage and incredibly touching..Nothing will beat her.Melissa gilbert is a good Laura but not a touching Helen .She doesn't convey emotions and is too nervous, too shaky and too tall to be credible..Patty duke was short but Melissa here is tall,as tall as Patty.
@@frenchieseverine4514 I think both actresses were great but patty duke was a short woman and Melissa was a tall 15 year old. I know I am a nit picker but the fact that Helen was taller than her teacher bothers me!

I live in France and i've searched this movie for years but i cannot find it anywhere. So bad.i wish i could see the movie with Patty mc Cormack. There is also a short movie from the 70's with a young actress playing Helen keller who had to be around 10 and i found it quite good.
The problem is that Melissa is too tall than Patty Duke, that and also her acting skills are really bad compare to the touching way of Patty Duke. I prefer the 1962 version.
Elle Noir. I agree. Nothing can come close to that original with Patty as Helen.Very touching. And Patty conveyed so well in her acting the difficulty Ann Sullivan was having with her. Ann just wasn't going to let Helen grab food and eat off her plate like the parents and their guests allowed her to do. It is actually kind of funny in the original to see the parents and guests talking about the issues of that time, and ignoring Helen, as she walks around grabbing and eating food off their plates.:)

They should have cast someone else as Helen Keller in this movie. Melissa Gilbert was far too old to be Helen Keller. Helen was around 7 when she met Annie and Melissa Gilbert looked 13 at the time this was made. I like Melissa Gilbert, but she was miscast here.
+Tim Reyes Even worse. She was about 15 when she did this movie. Can you believe it? But it was Melissa Gilbert's production company so her movie. She was bound to play Helen whether anyone liked it or not.

Hallie Eisenberg actually looked 6 years old in the role but I think she was 8 but still better than a teenager
This movie was only good as a novelty item. Only to see Patty Duke play Annie Sullivan and that's all. The movie itself does not measure up to the original in which she played Helen with Ann Bancroft as her Annie. Melissa Gilbert is simply to old for the part and her portrayal is weak at best. The original Miracle Worker is the only one worth watching.
I saw this version with a friend or maybe it was the even newer one but I think it was this one. I think she got the wrong idea of the blind from this. She thought they were dangerous or something. She didn't know anything! I love this story especially now that I have a blind friend and am writing about a blind character.
From what I've heard, the playwright changed Helen's age to twelve so an older actress could fill in the role as it would be too complicated for a six-year-old to pull off. The same kind of thing was done for the characters of Alex Kinter in "Jaws" (1975) and Claudia in "Interview with the Vampire" (1994). ; )
The Ross' the horrible couple who her acting coaches who she lived with said she was 2 years younger sometimes or all of the time . In Patty's autobiography she tells her true ages when she did Movies & TV work.. When she portrayed Helen Keller on Broadway for 3 years..When the Big screen version of The Miracle Worker was made they said Patty was 15 and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at 16 yrs old..
Really, if this teacher was miraculous, my respect and admiration for Ann Mansfield Sullivan, Hellen certainly achieved much with their commitment to learn, but this teacher she had not accomplished anything.
I have heard about this film, but I never thought I would be able to see it. It really is interesting seeing Patty Duke (who is famous for playing Helen Keller in the earlier 1962 film with Anne Bancroft) in the role of Annie Sullivan this time. I wonder what was going through her head when she was asked to do the film (but as Annie) over again. Melissa Gilbert is a great actress, but at the time this was made, I don't think she was the right choice for Helen.
It does kind of seem they re-did this just so Patty Duke would have the opportunity to play Anne Sullivan. What other reason is there? The original is brilliant!
To cast Melissa Gilbert as Helen was a crappy-decission....I love Melissa but she was too connected to the Little House in the Prairie that time.... Looks like some big studio bosses pulled the strings here somehow....while maybe other people more connected to the production fainted in shock :)
Maybe they haven't found a 7-8 year old girl who was good enough in the casting. And then they hoped the audience would forget how old the girl really shall be. But you're right, it's really strange, such an enormous age difference...
She was but even nowadays she looked like she was only about 10! Poor Melissa Gilbert not only was 15 but looked older because she was taller than little Patty Duke as Annie.
Yeah. Patty was, I believe, 16 years old playing the part of Helen in the original. I still can't get over the fact that this is the older Patty playing Ann Sullivan in this remake. RIP Patty.
Just save yourself the trouble and don't watch the remakes. Incidentally, in the original (AND AMAZING) version starring Anne Bancroft, Patty Duke WAS actually 14. It's a great (and teeny tiny obviously) actress that portray a 7 year old.
man it must be horrible being blind and deaf. its bad enough being one of the other but both is just horrendous! imagine that, being completley cut off from the world and not being able to see and hear the most beautiful of things... so sad yet helen keller and all the other blind and deaf people out there still managed to live a happy life!
It's not the best role for Melissa :((( I love her, but she is too old for this role here. My favorite Helen Keller is Hallie Kate Eisenberg (remake in 2000). That girl is amazing in that film!!!!!!! She have got an Oscar from me :P :D She is so little, and very-very-very good actress!!!!!!
This is such a silly remake! OMG! I Love Melissa Gilbert on Little House but this is just NOT the role for her. Teacher and student are the same height and student looks way too mature on this version. Terribe casting. For those who don't know, go see the ORIGINAL film of this movie... waaaay much better! Anne Bancroft played the Teacher and young Patty Duke played the student, Helen Keller. check it out! Movie title 'Miracle Worker'. Anne Bancroft won Best Actress and young Patty Duke won Best Supporting Actress Awards for these roles at the 1963 Academy Awards!
Now I have watched enough eps of Little House on the Prairie to know that that house was used a whole bunch on that show. It was the blind school at one time.
Melissa just does not have what it takes for this role..she doesn't! I don't really know why she was ever considered for the part.. I wonder who she beat out. Strangely, I'm not even sure I could give Patty Duke an A+ in her turn as Anne Sullivan, either. It's all far too sterilized~ To this whole production I say, "Pfffffftt!"
I think the one with patty duke was better . when i see the movie i still cry. I was 7ys old when i first seen the movie, to me malissa was almost as big as her teacher they could have gotton a 7yrs.old to play the part
to 5277407: yes she did and it was another remake of "The Diary of Anne Frank" she played Anne of course and I thought it was pretty good although a bit weird since she didn't really look like anne frank.
The director of the original film (and original stage production), Arthur Penn, went on to direct such masterpieces as Bonnie and Clyde, Little Big Man and the Missouri Breaks, so you know that the original version was an artful, canny, unsentimental look at disabilities and teaching. This travesty of a remake, on the other hand, is more like a sub-par episode of Little House on the Prairie.
Sorry Gilbert but you seem too tall and look to old to play this part but it is awsome to see Patty playing the role of Anne, after her best friend and co star played that part and she as Helen when she was a girl.
Wow Melissa Gilbert played Anne Frank, Helen Keller, and Laura Ingalls Wilder! She is like a historical person perfectionist!

I only recently came to realize what a wonderful actress and talented performer Patty Duke was
the original is untouchable. it is as classic as Michangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling. no one will ever make a remake that even comes close.

man it must be horrible being blind and deaf. its bad enough being one of the other but both is just horrendous! imagine that, being completley cut off from the world and not being able to see and hear the most beautiful of things... so sad yet helen keller and all the other blind and deaf people out there still managed to live a happy life!
The Miracle Worker telling the story of Helen Keller
It's not the best role for Melissa :((( I love her, but she is too old for this role here. My favorite Helen Keller is Hallie Kate Eisenberg (remake in 2000). That girl is amazing in that film!!!!!!! She have got an Oscar from me :P :D She is so little, and very-very-very good actress!!!!!!
Is this like a remake from the 1968 version
This is such a silly remake! OMG!
I Love Melissa Gilbert on Little House but this is just NOT the role for her. Teacher and student are the same height and student looks way too mature on this version. Terribe casting. For those who don't know, go see the ORIGINAL film of this movie... waaaay much better! Anne Bancroft played the Teacher and young Patty Duke played the student, Helen Keller. check it out! Movie title 'Miracle Worker'. Anne Bancroft won Best Actress and young Patty Duke won Best Supporting Actress Awards for these roles at the 1963 Academy Awards!
whatever happened to the whole M Gilbert full movie?!
Now I have watched enough eps of Little House on the Prairie to know that that house was used a whole bunch on that show. It was the blind school at one time.
So Laura Ingall’s is blind like Mary with the addition of being deaf!
Outstanding performances. Even though it's impossible to top the original.
no. that one is the hallie kate eisenberg version which was released in 2000.
Melissa just does not have what it takes for this role..she doesn't! I don't really know why she was ever considered for the part.. I wonder who she beat out.
Strangely, I'm not even sure I could give Patty Duke an A+ in her turn as Anne Sullivan, either. It's all far too sterilized~
To this whole production I say, "Pfffffftt!"
is this whole act 1?????
Hate the remake, love the story.
I think the one with patty duke was better . when i see the movie i still cry. I was 7ys old when i first seen the movie, to me malissa was almost as big as her teacher they could have gotton a 7yrs.old to play the part
wow, that's ann bancroft?! unbelievable. i saw her from the graduate.
Helen was 6 when Anne came, but now she's......14?
to 5277407: yes she did and it was another remake of "The Diary of Anne Frank" she played Anne of course and I thought it was pretty good although a bit weird since she didn't really look like anne frank.
@lotsandlotsofbubbles ~ No she doesn't! TOtally agree! Well said!
Is this the real version or is it a remake?
Remake
4:41 is the best!!!!! hahahahahahahah
8:52 That was kinda funny
this reminds me of da original 1
Sorry Gilbert but you seem too tall and look to old to play this part but it is awsome to see Patty playing the role of Anne, after her best friend and co star played that part and she as Helen when she was a girl.
Melissa Gilbert is the person playing Helen Keller not patty duke
OMGG IM DUMB!!i love patty duke n i jus found out tht she played anne in this one.ahh
Melissa is, in fact, 4 inches taller than Patty.
@1simaddict1 yes it is!
i thought this movie was in black and white?
auuutsch ( punching beat with the doll)
Patty Duke looks like Diane Keaton in this movie
