1 °F Cold Start Challenge in Alaska | 1996 Ford 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel

- Starting a 1996 Ford F350 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel in Alaska in 1 degree F subzero temperatures. This truck has been good to me, starts by itself without being plugged in down to about -25 F. It's amazing what good glow plugs and glowplug relays, good injectors, good batteries and a good starter will do. I always get request to see the truck do a cold start because folks don't believe it's possible, so here's another one...

If you take care of them, you never need the Cosby sauce...
What’s Cosby sauce?
@@christianf4305
Either starting fluid. Zip ties and bias plies calls it that on his channel. On the Cosby show, back in the day, Bill made some of his secret BBQ sauce that was said to make the ladies all lovey-dovey. Well, fast forward to what we now know about creepy Bill and what got him in prison.

The best diesel engine made*
What do you mean "one f the best diesels ever" 7.3 is the best the world has ever seen
@@Tonk-tz1pt Idk the 5.9 has to be in the conversation too 💪🏼
Not a Ford guy but that sweet looking truck. I love seeing older trucks kept in good condition.
Not a Ford guy because you haven't grown out of being a follower. Sticking with the better shit you heard spoke at a younger age. Grow up and think for yourself bro. A whole other world is out here, outside of your comfort zone and what your heroes said when you were 8....
I was stationed at Ft. Wainwright in the early 1980s. I can vouch for the cold temperatures. But 1 degree is a warm day in Alaska in the winter. My guess is at normal central Alaska winter temperatures of -30 to -50 or colder, you would maybe get a have revolution of crankshaft and then maybe a solenoid click after that.
Makes me feel old. I remember when i was 10 my dad bought a brand new 95 F450 7.3L and i told all my friends about it. He went through 6 transmissions with that truck but my god i loved the sound of it. It didnt help he would load the dumpbody up and be towing a dual axle chipper everyday.
The older trucks like that are the best they don't build them like they do anymore
Met this guy in Moab yesterday in this truck. It was quite the rig. Glad to see him out livin life.
Timmy is the man
Sad to think there may never be trucks this good ever again
I'm more of a Cummins fan, but I drive semis, no ot diesel pickup trucks, my latest truck is a series 60 Detroit, they don't start if it's under 20 degrees out, stay strong guys
All praises to Jesus Christ 🙏❤️🥹
@@mr.brownn6984 no, blood for the blood God
the 7.3 Godzilla (gas but damn good)
@@cargotoolshop5319i have a series 60 too 😢
Man I love everything about 70’s to 90’s ford pickups!!
bro how can this be an alaskan truck and be this clean? respect
Winter dosent hurt the car salt does. And worse is salt cars in a climate that freezez and that's Shit lasts forever up there
@PrisonMike308 Welcome to Minnesota, where salt is used heavily, lol
@@kargmeister hell ya it is. Them mfrs spray you at the red lights they don't care lol. MN is rough on the salt. To heavy IMO. Trucks still go 20 on the freeway while I'm going 60 in my accord not sliding a bit.

I drive a 2004GMC Sierra 3/4 ton HD that I bought new. I’ve used a synthetic oil since it’s 1st oil change and she starts just as well when it gets that cold here in northern Michigan. I’ve had a Predator programer for it since day one. I drive it 200 miles in one direction at least twice a month so 800 total miles. Average highway driving at around 76mph it gets around 27.1 mpg. It’s best mpg was 29.6. I’m planning on leasing a truck this fall and spending the next 2 years doing a complete down to the frame restoration. Plan on it being the last truck I ever own!!!!!
As a guy who wants to own a obs power stroke, this is one of the CLEANEST ones I’ve seen, thag paint job is out of this world man
It’s old but it’s one of the greatest pickup trucks of all time. These 7.3s and the gassers of those times too, moved America. And did it without a complaint just thirsty
Absolutely love it. Love the 7.3. Love the paint. Love the fact that it’s a livable space on a damn 7.3. Fucking awesome man
Ive never owned one but , i worked for a crew in the early 90's that had bunch of these as flatbeds . The amount of punishment that 7.3 can take is legendary.
That’s a absolutely beautiful truck
What a beast of a vehicle
I have a '99 F250 7.3 with 382K. "What's the trick?" You have done something I can't do. I have to have mine plugged in when it is in the 20s. Occasionally, I might get lucky and it starts but I quit taking the chance.
7.3 the best ford diesel engine ever!
My 350 is down to nothing but the motor ya can’t kill it I love my 7.3
New 6.7s will eat its ass all day long
To bad ford had nothing to do with the 7.3
Not a Ford engine. It’s an international.
@@Welcometofacsistube neither has dodge with thr Cummins so what's your point.
I love those gauges up on the side. I wish every truck had that.
Your truck is wicked man
That old thing turning over just brings a smile to my face🤙🏾
I find it funny how the 2 most reliable diesel engines usually have the most trouble starting up in cold weather
lol
Old school simplicity is sometimes a double edged sword.
Not a Ford guy, but my dream truck is anything with a 7.3 in it. Cant deny they are the best diesels ever built.
I had a buddy with a 6.9 and I had a 7.3 IDI. both started really good in the cold. even below zero they would start good. my brother had a 97 powerstroke and if you even sneezed around that truck it didn't want to go. even when it did it would whine worse then what this truck did..
People under estimate the value of the 7.3 idi. I started mine regularly in -15-20 and it was pretty good about it. My 95 power stroke is just as reliable. Good batteries, nipendenso starter, working glow plugs - 5w-40 syn oil, fresh fuel filter in the fall and some anti gel when the temperature drops to 0 and below. Closest thing to a break down was with the idi @ 15 below. Set out on a before dawn 200 mile trip and a fuel filter gelled up on me 40 miles into the trip. Turned around and held it to the floor at a max speed of 35. Pulled into the drive at the house stopped in front of the shop roll up door and she stalled. My fault all the way. I forget to put a spare filter behind the seat. Great truck and even better engine. I wish I still had it
As a Ford guy… our older trucks are king. They were just so good. Although all of the big 3’s 70’s 80’s and 90’s trucks were awesome.
She didn't sound happy about having to wake up just after the sunset. 🥶😁
I love these videos I have friends who
Have 7.3s that barely start when it’s 40 degrees
Bad glow plugs or relay
Maintenance
The '96/7.3 F-350 is freaking bullet proof for the most part.
Ahhh my 2022 RAM Limited Longhorn 3500 Cummins starts up here in the 406 at 20+ below zero never an issue love the advancement in tech no wait no gloplugs just pure perfection and luxury!
Sick setup man
It's amazing how everything has ice but your truck looks like is been sipping margaritas in a garage. Nice truck anyway.
ya they tend to start like that when you take care of your like you do .if you just run something into the ground and dont give a shit about it it wont start .these guys that show you these trucks like that and they start right they really do take real good care of there stuff.
Man I saw you on the Stuart-Cassiar highway and am blown away by how awesome that truck is set up is!
I have no idea how many times this video has popped up for me. But the 7.3l diesel is by far my favorite and your rig is sweet as always
This guy is the real deal. He’s got a cabin on his f’n truck. He’s got a cabin on his f’n land. He’s even got a cabin on his f’n cabin.
Ok……..it’s a f’n loft. But still.
I just love it because it’s a 1996 power stroke diesel and they rock!
Not that we cant believe it . We LOVE the fact that tank still turns on 😂❤
Gotta love then ol glow plugs and pre-cups
I’d love another collaboration between intl & ford - one of the best diesel engines ever produced.
I envy you in a positive way man, may God bless you out there and wherever your cool truck takes you!
True Men make anything warm up in the Winter, good on you bro!!
Many of morning spent drinking coffee, listening to that sound waiting for it to warm up.
I'm amazed that 96 has done so well, saving money for a 99 currently
Can't get over how beautiful that centurion F350 is. Perfect condition. I envy you lol
Kickass setup, nothing beats those Ford OBS trucks, I sold my 93 a few months ago and wish I could drive it around one more day, something different about a jacked up 90s manual with a few dead ducks in the back
Good batteries, good fuel, good plugs and you'll never have an issue. TDI's are the same way.
had a 1989 work van with the 7.3 .... i ran used (cleaned filtered) motor oil and vegetable oil (again cleaned filtered). didnt hesitate once. since i had two fuel tanks, i would run the last 15 min of driving on Diesel. and start up with diesel then switch over to the motor oil and vegetable oil mix and drive around all day on that stuff. saved tons of $$ ended up selling that van, wish i had not.
What a beautiful Truck bro!
I’d say one of fords best looking models .
Y'all are some special kind of folks to be able to live in those temperatures.
There’s no good morning waking up to 1° temperature! Life’s too short to hide from the cold! I’m down here and sunny South Florida, and that’s where I’ll stay!🐬🌴🦩🌺🍊🏄🏿♂️☀️ DALE
Looks like a lot of fun to live this way. Hmmm one day I'll do it. I'm sure of that.
What a beautiful nice looking truck 🔥🔥
Love ur life bro, wish I could vacation like that,God bless you!!!!!!
That paint job is sick! Beautiful truck!
I’m envious of you man. You’re living my dream.
What a beautiful truck and property
Glad you weren't in Montana this past week, -40 below in YNP, many places air temp went below -20. 1F rather warm by comparison.
My man it was -10 here in TN last Christmas and my 06 Highlander with 275k miles started up like a lawn mower after cutting grass lol, I figured we’d have some extreme Alaska temps lol
Love that freaking HPOP whine when it's cold!
The best motor ever made. A little tlc and it runs forever
love those square bodies. awesome truck.
The guy worked for four years drove a 7.3 turbo diesel same model regular cab flatbed dually and it was a beast
Sweet ride! Love the keyed entry!
interesting info!.. keep 'em COMING! 👍
That fords like "just 5 more minutes, dad."
That's such a killer setup, man.
The best damn diesel ford made
Awesome. I have a 2015 Ford 350. Ford tough!!
I had a 93 f150 360k miles runs like a BEAST!
Sounded like a little kid in the morning before school. “I don’t wanna get up…” (you have to imagine the whiny voice part)
Nice easy start, now come nack tomorrow when she all warmed up.
Yes sir I live in southeastern indiana it gets a little chilly my 02 f350 fires up every time I also have 2000 f350 she needs plugged in though one of the best engines ever made
Sounds just like my power stroke😅😅 Drove for 3 years without plugging it up one 😅 Pretty much Blow all the o'rings.😊😊
That engine sounds like me in cold weather, doesn’t like it but knows there’s work to be done
That's an awesome truck, my cold brother!
Now that'sa NiCe TruUcK !!!
You can get a dim light solar panels to attach to your block heater. It'll keep it at 50-120 degrees so you don't have the cold start. Built one for my PS and have never had to cold start even @ -40
Having good glow plugs helps 100%
That’s a beautiful truck! 👍🤘
I feel ya Minnesota -55 with the windshield very soon my Ford will be whining too😂
I like that custom paint job
If the glow plugs are working, it should never be a problem. One thing to watch out for is the oil cooler. The o-rings will start to leak when cold, but then stop leaking as the engine warms up.
U locked it up... Who's breaking in ..snowman
I'm more impressed by the pin striping on the old girls!
I ain’t much of a Ford guy, but boy I’d like to have one of them
Healthy injectors and glow plugs are paramount
One beautiful truck my friend
Reminds me of the ‘88 7.3 IDI my dad had never had to plug it in but damn was she loud first thing in the morning. She’s got well over 600,000 miles on her now and still a great super cold start truck. Just don’t/wont make them like they used to.
Love my 7.3s nice truck btw sounds awesome
That’s a really nice rig buddy.
Take care of her and she’ll take care of you.
Ford, best trucks for 50+ yrs. 7.3 is a awesome engine
Sasquatch seems like a good guy.
Good batteries good glow plug relay thin oil 5 40 or straight 40 she'll first like a champ no fuss no fight.
Love the paint on it! Modern trucks are so bland
Looking good fellow Alaskan. I live on Kenai Peninsula near Kenai ❤
That’s an awesome truck!
Yeah...this is normal. I only plugged mine in when it was going to be below zero overnight because it's just easier on the engine in the morning. If I wasn't home I just started it cold. As long as your glow plugs are working it's fine
I love this setup
i love the camper and the flat bed super homey!
I like this whole li set up
homeboy locked his doors in the middle of nowhere😅
such a beautiful truck dude
I love the Powersmoke!
