The red dagger you get in the prison is called the *Astral Dagger* . It's kind of a fun challenge to use it exclusively.
I find it kinda sad that the few things that the Saturn version had like sprint and the extra area didn't make it to the later versions still I do love the inclusion of Maria's fight easily one of my most favorite boss fights in the game
first time even knowing a saturn version existed, and that it was different in ways lol. definitely looks fun.

In the Japanese Version, Nose Devil is in the Colo, Sword Bro is under Olrox's Quarters save room and the other fairy is where sword is in the american version.
This applies in Requiem as well, the modern SotN port that's also available on iOS and Android for 2.99. Real talk!
Watched a few randos and decided to see what was popular on the channel and started watchin' this.
Seeing the name "Sega Saturn" caused me to immediately start watching all of the Segata Sanshiro commercials, which started a 2 hour adventure down the youtube rabbit hole.....
I have returned....and I am now going to watch the video.
There's probably a loading screen when you leave a boss to reload all the things that were unloaded when there was a loading screen when you entered the boss fight.
PSX version does the same thing, it just doesn't tell you and takes about as long as it takes for you to realise something is up, then it's loaded and you don't really think about it too much.
Damn I can't believe this guy stole my idea to play the saturn version and get 100%!

I always thought the Saturn was similar in power to the PSX, so why does this version look so much worse?
This is just an educated guess but, the saturn while comparable in many ways to the PSX, was a pain in the ass to program. Porting a game in this context is not as easy as just compiling the same source, you would need to rewrite a lot of stuff to achieve the same effects/performance on the new architecture. And the saturn wasn't super successful, so maybe Konami didn't put that much budget into a proper port.
it was a bad port.
1. The Saturn is significantly better than the PSX for 2D sprite based games, but the 2 CPU setup/hardware is very hard to program for. 2. To top it off , this version was not developed by the original SOTN team. It was assigned to Konami's "C tier" team. Konami Nagoya
It was originally made for ps1 and then ported to saturn. And poorly optimised.
A wish konami would put out a version of Symphony of the night with the Saturn exclusive areas included
Ah yeah the hack/mod that makes the game use actual transparencies instead of dithered messes. It also dramatically improves performance.

Man, I want to see the universe where Sega didn't make the Sega 32x CD and the Saturn to compete against each other. The Saturn was such a neat bit of hardware.
You met the sub goal for MGS! Having played both the PS1 version and the HD remaster on the Gamecube (Twin Snakes) I like the extra scenes from that version. They both play the same, but the Twin Snakes version was always my favorite way to replay it.
Twin Snakes is trivially easy compared to the original, but the cutscenes are well worth it.
They do *NOT* play the same mate.
The item at 1:20:47 reads "SAIN iri shitajiki" which would literally translate to "pencil board with a sign (autograph) on it". Pencil boards, or undersheets, refer to various types of materials placed under a sheet of paper for writing, either to prevent marking on the sheets below or to provide a better surface for writing.

Apparently it was a contest-related item. It does nothing in-game, but there was a contest to find it and take a picture of it in your inventory to win an autographed pencil board from the main Castlevania artist at the time.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! The Donkey kong skeleton part works the same way. The deal is that in the Saturn version has more ground to cover because the tiles are alonged to fill the room. There's the reason the staircases pixels are uneven. So no reason to be mad haha.

Im playing the Sega Saturn English Patched Version on a modded PS4 and it runs and looks AMAZING! The definitive version IMO. The Saturn version has so much extra cool stuff, and running flawlessly on the PS4 is just a treat. I was originally playing on my OG Saturn with a burned disk, Retrovision Cables, Retrotink 2x Pro on a old Plasma, and it looked great. But after running in on the PS4 it blows it out the water!

We never achieved perfect emulation because of the RISC model APU chosen for the system and many games where DESIGNED by development teams around the R3800i chosen as an industrial-grade CPU with a math and graphics coprocessor (APU) clunky with its quirks and workarounds. It made emulation for the system very difficult by default because many titles where written and DESIGNED to abuse this broken state of the hardware chosen to do the business. The one core you can run accurately with JIT compilation for the R3800i on is angrylion CXE built as a plugin running in mupen64plus but good luck being picky and choosy with your motherboard, CPU, and GPU to get good performance with it, and designing an entire system around what that requires, no thanks. Before any one comments PJ64 doesn't count as it has a speedhacks menu and a per-md5 flags feature to change the way the system is emulated, meaning it'll never be accurate and has to use speedhacks/dynamically loaded mod features via flags added on top of the base emulation to be playable. JIT also chugs horribly in PJ64 so its not even worth a notable mention as an accurate emulator. I'm going to toss ParaLLE and other accurate options like angrylion out as they are sensitive, hardware-finnicky, require additional config tweaking and not easily ccessable without intricate knowledge of the emulators they run on top of. Although ParaLLE has extreme premise and would be wonderful to have as a standalone, preconfigured runtime binary everyone could enjoy if hardware dependency could be taken out of what it is as a core.
A.I. will solve this soon if someone doesn't bother to put the work in.

I'm guessing I could recreate this glitch on the PSP or Android version by just modifying the save file to change my Maria save to a Alucard save.
PS: Both of them seem to use a facsimile of the PSX memory card for saves as a file.

never ever drive and be under the influence of anything of any amount. its not worth it. i spent two nights in jail total ( jail is a place that I never ever want to go again. hard to put into words how bad it is. nothing good thats for sure)

Yes, the background look broken because it's not the native game resolution due to the Saturn. The original Saturn version look like it's growing to break every minute.

Thats because they are. This port was developed by a lower tier Konami team. Its one of the main reasons why is inferior to the PS1 version, even tough the Saturn is way more capable than the PS1 for 2D games.
Yeah, they're not very good. I don't get why people make such a big deal about them (wanting them to be included in a "definitive version", etc.). They don't really add anything to the game, which already has enough content. The Godspeed Boots and Maria mode are great, though.

This game should have been much better on Saturn but it wasn't the main team and I believe rushed in ways to get the extra content in etc. The resolution isn't even ideally scaled and crap lol. I love Saturn but this is a PSX superior game for sure. It's weird how some things Saturn ends u with better 2D ports (some of the Capcom fighting games iirc) and many other times PSX.

About the mist situation... it's not an "optimization" issue but a hardware limitation. The Saturn doesn't handle transparency AT ALL:
That's why:
- The "light beams" when Dracula teleports in the fight with Richter isn't transparent
- The background in dialog boxes has a "checkerboard" look
- The mist has a "checkerboard" look
- etc
No, it can handle transparency (both Saturn VDP GPUs can do it) it's just that it's a pain in the butt to do it, especially on the VDP1 but it can be done.
Plus do keep in mind back then when people were still using composite cables, these kind of issue were glossed over until when people started buying bigger TVs in the early HD days.

Because this is a modded ROM... and the guy who did it is still working on it... it's not finished yet but he can only do so much since we don't have access to the Source code

I wish they would fix the screen that's stretched. It creates uneven pixel columns and some are 2 pixels wide while others aren't.
Not possible. Saturn horizontal resolution is 320. PSX is only 256.

N64 emulation IS the fucking worst. I STILL own my N64 from my senior year in high school. I would never get rid of it. However, I don't have any memory cards, I'm still using the cartridges.
My god the Saturn graphics are so bad. Wasn't it known for being a "2D monster?" Yet the lack of 3D hardware makes certain transparent effects look garbage
This game runs in 3d mode. Exactly how the Playstation handles "2d".
2d on the Playstation doesn't actually exist. All the 2d you see is actually textured polygons moving around the screen. No sprites or tiles. No 2d hardware.

Backsliding, at least on alucard, is faster, and is what speed runners do.
It's at least faster than walking, and it's a force of habit for speed runners to back slide because that's all you'd get in most of the speedruns.
