Key thing you mention: the developers took that money and dumped it right back into development. Whenever I'm a little underwhelmed by a change they make to it, I remind myself that the ONLY money I've ever spent on this game was the original purchase price back in 2016. None of the NMS DLC has been paid DLC. That in itself sets Hello Games apart and it's something other developers could really learn from.

Paradox interactive could learn alot then considering they have almost 30 dlc's now i know its over 27 but not sure is it exactly at 30 mark yet, they keep releasing more dlc's,i saw back in 2020 not sure was it a bug but the freaking utopia cost 300$,but now its 30$ for that specific dlc.idk was it a bug or something, but one thing's for sure they got alot of hate for overpricing the dlc's and only putting fun stuf into those, base game feels lifeless and you can't even mod it sinse 90% of mods require you to own a dlc to function.

Any game they publish is given tiny updates but endless amounts of dlc.
Cities skylines is almost unplayable without dlc, it is like an entirely different game, the dlc completely transforms it into a Sequal with hundreds of more systems to play around with but the issue is the dlc costs over 150 euro or some crap like that, even tiny dlc like green cities is more than 12 euro and all it does is add some building models and cars

One time while playing No Man's Sky, I was exploring a system approximately 50 thousand LY away from my home system. I found a kid who just started playing and was absolutely loving it, we spent the entire day just exploring the planets in that system, by the end of the day, he was rich with units and had a really cool exotic ship. He and I are still friends to this day, and we still play No Man's Sky together. It's a great game when it comes to teamwork, it's an amazing experience and it's not a cash grab. No Man's Sky's currency system depends on how long you play and how you play. There are 3 currency types, that being Units, Nanites, and Quicksilver. Units and Nanites are relatively easy to get but Quicksilver has a bit of a catch. Quicksilver is obtained by completing missions at the Nexus which is at the Space Anomaly. The Space Anomaly is the Hub for Travelers, Travelers are what you and every other player are. No Man's Sky is a very underrated game but I guarantee in the next 3 updates or so, it will have hundreds of game companies falling below and it will be getting loads of attention. I'm a Derelict Explorer in No Man's Sky which basically means I explore Derelict Freighters. Derelict Freighters are Freighters that had "Biological accidents" which caused dangerous biological entities on the ship to escape and infest the entirety of the ship. Derelict Freighters are jackpots for Travelers looking for stuff to sell, there's a crate full of loot around every corner, you just have to be careful not to awaken the infestation. Going through a Derelict Freighter can be really unsettling and scary at times, it reminds me of Dead Space, which is exactly why I made my traveler look like Isaac Clarke.

If companies lie about stuff and prosper then guess what companies will keep deceiving people. Did you ever consider all the game developers who didn't lie about stuff, didn't raise the capital, and never got anywhere even if they had a great product while Hello Games repeatedly said THINGS WERE NOT TRUE ON MULTIPLE OCCASSIONS and a ton of money. The community of this game has to be one the nicest there is, just taking a look at the NMS subreddit is a breath of fresh air. People there seem to just enjoy themselves and that’s what gaming should be about.

"some people will forever look at the devs as liars and con artists"
The difference is intent. NMS did commit to their mistakes but I, personally, never got the feeling of ill intent. It just felt like "idiots that bit off more than they could chew". Empty promises. A dream. (looking at you, Star Citizen)
They have redeemed themselves over and over and over by now. They overcame their BS and metaphorically transcended into what they are now: extremely committed developers with the best possible outlook.
"What is better? To be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?"
I think everyone deserves the chance to truly redeem themselves through hard and honest work.

NMS made like what? 400-600mil? If all that went into development I would expected more gameplay aside from base building and basic trading functionality after 10+(?) years of development. The game is in a good place and made its own niche (little bit like minecraft in space) between the played Space giants such as Elite(even though it’s in a rough state), Star Citizen and upcoming StarField. still feels like they could have done more variety of gameplay experiences.
P.s. From research I did, NMS features so far comes down to Base building and trading with some combat too, but if I missed more gameplay loops the player actively participates in - do tell me.

What not many seem to talk about with Sean's appearance on late night talk shows is that they weren't publishing the game entirely on their own. Sony Interactive Entertainment helped them with publishing their product and organized the entire off-development public reception of it. Sean never wanted to pretend to play the game on late night, but Sony's suits pushed for it to make pre-purchase sales.
So many people hated on Sean directly when he was backed into a corner by a media behemoth he had no chance of swaying. It wasn't entirely his fault. They made a deal with the devil to get the game out and they were manipulated because of that. Then there was the flooding of their offices.

Then I was introduced to Internet Historian back in 2020 and watched his "The Engoodeding of No Man's Sky". Not only was that an eye opener about the difficult situation Hello Games found itself in, but also got me to buy the game DRM-free on the next sale.
I played for a while enjoyed it, but trailed off playing relatively shortly, though kept it installed always expecting "one day I'll play again". Since then I saw multiple updates, which I expected to be paid DLCs, but no... it always installed and updated, no extra cost.
It is truly a game made with love, passion, and despite it's rocky launch, integrity.

I think the most impressive part about it is Hello Game's consistency. And I'm not talking about just releasing updates regularly, I mean it's seriously impressive with how consistent they've kept the theme, art style, direction, etc. of the game. Even with this recent Outlaws update, they might've added a new cloth physics system and some shiny new ships but even with all these new additions the game is still drenched in that "No Man's Sky" vibe you'd expect from a game like this. Most AAA studios seriously struggle with keeping their game consistent through updates like Hello Games has and they honestly have my respect for it, they must have one hell of a creative team backing them up

However, the one thing that hello games did get right was that they took it upon themselves to SERIOUSLY deliver as much as they could from release and on... For free. AND without even actually shelling out any empty corporate roadmaps or repeating the same mistakes with their major updates.

There are a lot of other indie games that are released to standard and fulfill promises while also getting years of free updates. tbh this is a trend I'm seeing in devs industry, and especially gaming
with all the modern techs and budgets, devs seems like they always over-promising about some features, then realize it is way more harder to make than they realize, hell they even failed to learn an ass old engine it seems (battlefield 2042)
but what we can see from Hello Games is, they realize that and actually still pursue their dream game, IN THE SAME GAME THAT EARN NO PROFIT. Of course people are still buying the game occasionally, but any sane business will make a no man sky 2.0, or maybe ask a little fee for DLCs, but no, they make every content for free

I had purchased No Man's Sky only just a few months ago in 2023. However, the game just sat on the shelf because I hadn't done the research and wasn't sure what to expect. Hearing of Starfield releasing this year hyped me up, until I learned it was only for PC and Xbox consoles, and even locked at 30fps for consoles. So I finally just decided to try out No Man's Sky, and I am so impressed with the game. I keep discovering new things to do every-time I enter the game. Fortunately I am entering the game at a time when all the dlc content and updates have occurred, so the game to me is a massive fun exploration. Almost every direction I turn presents opportunities....and I haven't even left my first system yet! The things that I wanted to see in Starfield are not there at all. However, No Man's Sky has these things which include: ability to adopt companions and ride them, manual travel from planet to space, MULTIPLAYER, and probably so much more! I was looking for a Space game to settle on for years to come, and I am pretty enthusiastic that No Man's Sky filling that position. Thanks for the video too! I wanted to see how much work had been done on the game after release and am excited to learn they kept working on the game to make it the incredible experience it is. Was super excited to play but the lack of content and repetitiveness hit me hard and stopped playing after a short while. Decided to give it a try 3 years later but couldn’t really connect with it. Now with everything that’s been added I feel like I’m playing in an endless world and there’s so much to explore and experience. Yeah I was angry when the game didn’t give us what it was supposed to, I might not be a middle schooler with braces that listened to Rihanna while playing the game in the middle of summer, maybe more of a guy playing this game in the middle of exam season in university now, but tell you one thing,
It was goddamn worth it. We’ll remember all the effort that devs put in a dead game to resurrect it and do the impossible. Unlike other games out there, the most recent one being BF2042
Sometimes in certain places in game, when I see specific sceneries, I get flashbacks from the past filled with nostalgia. It’s like something gets triggered in me and I remember what I was doing in that exact same moment 6 years ago, I even sometimes remember the real life scenery to details. Kinda cool and sad at the same time

I feel like No Man's Sky deserves all the credit, most AAA releases now are just as broken at launch and sometimes they're fixed just enough to where people forget about it, or they just don't get fixed at all. But it's just become so commonplace now that when a AAA game is released and it's a complete shitshow people spend less than a minute thinking about it because it's just like, "Oh, cool, another broken AAA game, what else is new?" Hello Games really did drop the ball and they completely messed up the launch and post-launch pr, but to actually stick to it and fix it up shows that they actually do care about making the game good unlike a lot of other studios, especially AAAs.

I got back into it because I didn’t have a game I felt like playing and figured I’d mess around a bit, and I’ve ended up putting in dozens of hours during the past week. There’s so much cool stuff you can do, it’s almost overwhelming, but you can do what you want at your own pace. It feels like a fully fleshed out game, and have loved playing it again

NMS has really showed a lot of passion and heart to keep pumping so much work into it and continue to keep updating it . I’ve been playing on and off for a few years now and everytime I get back into it there’s always something new ! What’s even more amazing is that every update has been free and not sold as DLC . They really stand out as a studio for these reasons

Man I feel like an investor that cashed out at the perfect time. I bought No Man Sky for $13. After hearing that the game was going to be worked on consistently I took a chance. Now I’m reaping the rewards. Game is great, fun, and I paid almost nothing for it.
Hell I even put my nephew into it. He loves the game (him being a Star Wars fanatic)

@@lijali1320 Ooooh yeah its changed plenty since then. Gameplay is smoother they fixed a lot of issues that would have you stuck and having to start a new game, Elements went through many name changes but now they are easier to understand, playing with friends but going on quest and missions together is a thing now, and so much more. Now you can choose to be a space traveler or a pirate/rogue doing good or not so good things. I would say definitely boot it up get all the updates and see for yourself.
PSA though: The beginning of the game is still a little boring, is better then before where it didn’t really explain much but it’s still monotonous.

It's impressive how the devs really care about their game and their community, it's awesome how they started from a terrible launch to an amazing game. They even used the money they got from the launch to make the game we have today.

I've got like 400 hours in this game and it regularly prevents me from having time to play anything else. After that long I have seen pretty much everything, but I got really into "artistic" base building so it's kind of just my sandbox for sculpting bases now. I spend a bunch of hours exploring to find the perfect location for the next base, then a whole bunch of hours building it, then repeat. It's pretty fun. Would appreciate another biome/variety update though to bring some extra life back to exploration.

Ever heard of No Man's Sky?" the first thing people see are all of the memes and hate from launch. If only they'd give it a chance, more people should be playing this game.
