@@hair.goblinnnI think fans of the book (mainly woman) don't want any more drama around this story. 😭 We also don't want our CW stars feuding . I will say this movie had to have controversy and drama somewhere just based around all the controversy and drama that the book and the author has I just don't think anyone saw it coming from here. I don't know maybe you're right maybe the movie was true enough to the book for people's likings and was a pretty good movie so they found drama elsewhere I don't know but I know a lot of the book fans are like whyyyyyy lol

People always cut off what Harry said half way through, the end of the comment was a go to the theatre movie, which is a perfectly reasonable comment to make when promoting your film in a world os streaming. Also to criticise someone for not being privileged enough to have had a university education when he was getting an education in the music industry from the age of 16 and earning millions before he was 20 seems a bit of a high horse.

I feel kinda bad for Harry about this because it is admittedly such a dumb soundbite but I also get what he means and feel like the clowning was unfortunate 😬Like, "It's a movie that takes advantage of the potential for big budget, sweeping scope, original world-building, driving linear plot, and meticulous curation of aesthetic that film as a medium offers, so it really feels like a MOVIE, as opposed to, say, many indie (or otherwise offbeat) films---which can still be great, but don't necessarily feel like traditional Silver Screen MoviesTM in the same way." I'm actually glad they toned down Jack's abusive character. I think it's scarier that he feels more like a regular guy than a monster. Rather than being a movie about an abusive relationship, it makes it more about how even the "nice guy" can refuse to see you as a person. It becomes a dissection of incel culture this way and I think it's one of the few things about the movie that really worked.

It's absolutely wild to me that Shia's apology - while being a country mile away from acceptable and truly accountable - isn't remotely the worst response to accusations of abuse I've ever read.

    • @PropheticShadeZ

I completely disagree, there is literally no way to do what you mentioned, you cannot take accountability in an apology.

      @@PropheticShadeZ Okay, two questions:
      1) Did you think I said Shia took accountability with his apology? If so, please re-read what I said. If your contention is that I implied you *can* take accountability with a public apology, then again, you have inferred something which I haven't implied.
      2) If that's your true contention, then what is the workable response to your own public wrongdoing? Entering spaces where you can atone for your past sins requires you to enter spaces with people you might have wronged in the past, or who would feel insecure at your unannounced presence. If you can only atone by *doing* then something must first signal your intent to do so, no? A public apology, taking accountability would surely highlight your intent to do more work in the space to rectify the damage you've done, would be the preferable route, I think.
Anything else is a vengeful desire to see people cast into the sun for fucking up. And I can tell you: our current *justice* system proves that that method doesn't work. If you're only treated like a pariah for wrongdoing, you never want to get better, because you're always that outsider.

Personally, though, I don’t think Wilde's video could be reasonably interpreted as a subtle firing of LaBoeuf. It's a valid consideration how (often) women operate differently to placate violent men in their workplace. But in my opinion, Wilde's slip of "Miss Flo" tells me: she was trying to play both sides to make her movie. Her disrespect of Pugh seems too flagrant not to be sincere, and I think Pugh's response supports this interpretation.

Thanks for making the link between Olivia and Harry's situation and Ariana and Ethan's. Though we don't know the full story, it's conceivable that Harry played the same role Ariana did - they both started something with a married coworker who had children. Yet, in both these scenarios, it's the woman who got the short end of the stick. Funny how that works. Nobody called Harry the homewrecker, nobody tried to sabotage him, people were actually blaming Olivia (and rightly so, I mean if anything, she's the one who cheated). Yet, when it's Ariana who's in Harry's position, nobody cares about the guy who left his wife and a child - people are dragging Ariana through the mud and putting the blame entirely on her. The two situations are almost identical, except with reversed genders. Funny how in both, it's the woman who faced most of the backlash.

@wenae4184 Princess Weekes's on "True Crime and the Theater of Safety" and I hear Matt Bernstein's pod ep on the perfect victim is good, but I am kinda triggered by this issue at this point and so tired of the subject so couldn't listen. Also Lindsay Ellis's vid on Yoko Ono is a generally great video about how the media treats women (Britney etc) that has a convenient list on all the stuff that you'd have to believe to believe the narrative the Depp PR team made up.
A lot of the info is more just doing research on how "mutual abuse" isn't real and the realities of how abuse works and power imbalances, looking through the evidence, esp looking at stories that were later corrected and analyzing the evidence. It is pretty clearly a story of a powerful man with a history of abusive tendencies who got worse with ongoing substance abuse and became physically and s****lly abusive to a much younger, less powerful woman. He then utilized the case as a way to re-traumatize her.
I believe now the media and at least the more media analysis and journalist class has caught up to this, but it's been pretty low-key. It's always been more of a consensus in the more academic/specialist spheres I've been in, but the TikTok and twitter campaign (a lot paid for by the Depp team) overwhelmed it.

And let's not forget that, like you mentioned, she had just buried a friend and the covid years took a toll on everyone's mental health.

And then that reveal just completely undermines the message :/
The simulation twist also got me, I was expecting it to lead into a reveal that they were working on the Manhattan project and there was going to be nuclear horror involved but nope!
I also find it really interesting just overall how dysfunctional the simulation is- the men have to leave *their* ideal world every day to work and keep paying for it, so the only ones who get to ‘enjoy’ the simulation are the women, who don’t even want to be there in the first place. Ultimately it serves no one and makes no one happy.

I didnt remember the mastermind being a woman? Though admittedly the ending was so rushed that I left the theater feeling mixed. I reallllllllly wanted to like the movie, and even convinced myself that I did, but the more I think about it, the more confusing and disappointing it feels for many of the reasons you mentioned :(

@@thehillisalive so at the end, Frank’s wife stabs him and says “It’s my turn now” which at the time with her having been his like, accomplice basically all along made me think that it was revealing her as the mastermind behind the simulation the whole time? Or wanting to take over? But I’m trying to look through clips/articles rn and it doesn’t seem like there’s a clear consensus on it! But it’s been a long while since I saw the movie so my memories could be off, but that’s how I interpreted it when I first watched it.
Edit: the ending is definitely rushed and confusing and I think that’s part of why I got confused over this, if I’m wrong in how I’m interpreting it. It felt really weird as if Shelley was actually… okay with? the simulation? Or something. Possibly they intended something along the lines of a ‘tradwife who upholds oppressive systems’ but it wasn’t explored deeply enough to make sense and have a clear message, it just confused it.

She was okay with it. I saw the ending more as how especially white women cause a lot of harm trying to cling to their second rung on the patriarchy ladder. The patriarchy was the cause of the simulation, and when we focus on power within the patriarchy rather than destroy the patriarchy as a system to live within,, we will always act accordingly, even if we’re women.

He's a great actor, and can play unhinged so well. Instead we got Harry Styles in a wig and we were supposed to believe now he's an incel? It just didn't work. Not to mention that boy can't act. It was criminal casting.

I had a friend who was a massive Harry Styles fan. We used to mock him as he's a straight guy and it was so random as I don't think he was even into One Direction but in the end we just let him fanboy about Styles. He was crushed when his Styles concert was cancelled. He loved when Styles did the whale so much he would make everyone watch compilations. He was looking forward to his film and subjected the friend group to the trailer and everything. Then this drama came out and my friend just entirely peaced out of the whole fandom i dont think he has mentioned Styles since 😂😂😂

there’s also an intersection that doesn’t further the situation at hand, but is an interesting thing to think about.
florence pugh was originally supposed to have a cameo in season one of ted lasso. it’s believed the episode was s1e2, “biscuits,” which was directed by zach braff, who was dating florence at the time.
apple tv went ahead with the show in october of 2019. ted lasso’s first season aired on apple tv in august of 2020.

Could he. Could he just not keep up the American accent for as long as he needed to ans the out of simulation scenes were already filmed? Was he always cosplaying as a Brit in the simulation in the script? That's what *I* want to know.

I don’t understand the Harry and Olivia were a PR relationship angle. Did anyone come away with a higher opinion of either Harry or Olivia? Im not saying either of them are awful people, but they came out of it looking messy. “Harry, date this woman who has just left a long relationship with the father of her 2 young children and we’ll leak stories about how you 2 were screwing each other so much on set it pissed off your co star”. - Harry’s PR team apparently.
I thought PR was meant to make celebs seem more refined and family friendly.

people throw around PR Relationship like it doesn't have an actual purpose. the only celebrity relationship rn I can think of that's been beneficial to both parties is Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. her choosing an All American Football Man basically erased the bad publicity she got when she was with Matty Healy. Kelce has gotten so much more famous than he ever would have before.
not saying they're PR, just that if there was ever a case study of "How To Make Yourself More Popular Through Dating Someone", they'd be a perfect example of everything lining up to fix her PR, and skyrocket his TV/Movie career.

    • @threeangels9318

PR doesn’t always have to be ‘good pr’ or be ‘more refined and family friendly’. In this case Olivia got more exposure for DWD as she was seen dating one of the actors in her film. I know many people who hadn’t really heard of her before dating Harry. Harry got to be seen dating a woman to cover up that he isn’t actually attracted to women. They started ‘dating’ at the start of filming and their ‘relationship’ ended when promo for DWD was done. His ‘relationships’ usually only last no more than a year but Covid delayed filming so that’s why the pr stunt lasted 2 years.

@ So a grown man with 100s of millions agrees to partake in these straight stunts? A bit infantilising. Not even having him settle down with a fake wife and kids? Instead they have him hook up with various models and celebrities. How many Harry Styles fans are hardcore homophobes who would stop coming to his shows? He waves rainbow flags and sometimes dresses in “womens” clothing. I guess management are okay with him releasing medicine which alludes to male oral sex, so he’s obviously had bi experiences (unless he was singing from another persons perspective)? It quite clearly says Olivia btw. The fact he got the tattoo while he was with Olivia Wilde makes that crystal clear.
