If an American guy started talking Dutch to me online, I'd be impressed as well! America is multilingual, though. Native languages, French, Spanish, German, and Creole are just some of the languages existing alongside English. I guess there must also be some Italian, Yiddish, and Dutch, too. It depends on where you go in America.

Maybe it's because we assume that people we encounter in America live here or were born here. That's why it's a bit less shocking to most, I think. Now, if someone knew you were here on vacation or immigrated here, I think people would still be a little amazed and/or thankful to them for learning English. Just my two cents.
As a French speaker , I appreciate the fact that you learn French. For sure you made some mistake, by exemple '' La Chinois '' is supposed to be '' Le Chinois '' but its really easy to understand what you are trying to said to us. Hi Ryan, i have been watching your videos quite a bit now. Great job man. I appreciate that you’re learning different languages and connect with different people from all parts of the world. The reaction from people that you have met so far, partly shows, how rare English native speakers have the ability to speak other languages cause they are too comfortable with everyone else also be able to speak English. These people that you met, they are naturally speaks 2-3 language’s effortlessly but they’re rarely get credit for that.
It's so funny that the first girl was so impressed by the fact that an American speaks French while she knew 4 languages. As a North African myself we all speak 3 languages + our dialect: Arabic, English, and French and it's not a big deal. She was trying to show off the fact that she knew German coz that's the only impressive thing for a North African. I'm from Malaysia...As you already know Indonesian (language)you can learn Malay language. The language is similar. We can understand each other. But be careful, some words in Indonesian (language) have totally different meaning in Malay.

Indonesian = Malay (Indonesian dialect) Malaysian = Malay (Malaysian dialect) But instead of calling them dialect, the both countries rename it as Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia. Only Singapore and Brunei still remain calling it Malay.
