RIP Chris we enjoyed your energy and listening to your stories.
I recall a Passion for Angling as it was a set of films that every angler should watch. Watch again. Then watch again.
Even though I know Chris Yates was using "old gear", I never realised that he was actually using Richard Walkers rod that he caught Clarissa, the 44 lb carp on. When they mentioned a Richard Walker rod, I just presumed it was one of Walkers Mk IV carp rods.
Just bought my mk 4 from Thomas turner it comes tomorrow 😊can’t wait😊
It’s in fantastic condition,thank you Thomas turner😊
what craftmanship
.superb thanks for posting.
Nice to hear more of the history of this rod. Most rods these days with the names of famous anglers on them are NOT of course designed by that angler. Wonderful to hear that Walker not only designed, but also built it himself. Not in any way an easy task. I could never have afforded a Mk IV back then, but someone has recently given me a Hardy's Walker MK IV Avon, which I now use and treasure. I was surprised to find so many companies were separately making rods to Walker's MK IV design. Most I see for sale seem to be made by James.
Angling's equivalent to the holy grail............
I will always remember that line from "A Passion for Angling" - "Richard Walker would be proud of his old rod still doing service, still mastering the monsters" .By the way, is this rod for sale by any chance?
Great video
I have a Richard Walker MK 4 split cane carp rod, that was given to me a few years ago. it doesn't have his signiture or anything on it, but it says on the rod case. It looks like its been used a bit, but the vanish is still on it and it looks good condition, how much are those rods worth round about?
I can imagine it would be pricey and out of my budget. Anyway I'm thinking of switching from carbon to cane at some point. Those hexagonal rods look wonderful.
I'd love a nice split cane rod, and started out fishing with them. However I'm too accident prone and generally break a rod every two or three seasons. Last one went when the dog decided to walk behind me on a back cast, caught a size 18 in her ear, took off snapped a tip section. The previous one died when one of the kids closed a car door before I'd fully extracted the rod. One of those things with a stick of carbon, but I wouldn't be so pragmatic with cane.
If a fish needs fighting out a snag with a the rod under water, so be it, I'd be reticent doing so with a Mk IV all the same.
Not heard this one before.
There is little doubt that Peter Thomas played a huge part in the successful landing of the Walker’s 44lb carp, but he could never lay claim to have caught the fish, only to have helped in extracting it from a considerable overhanging trailing bramble bush at the waters edge where it had become stuck.
Chris
Nice man cave!
I'm not the Carp historian unfortunately. I only made the film, and as a sea angler am unable to comment. I will however pass your comments on to Chris Ball.
Phill
That would be up to Chris Ball, plus whether or not you could raise a big enough mortgage.

Hi, although this has not got anything to do with Rods it is about that carp and Dick Walker.
I remember meeting 2 Anglers who were mouthing it off that Walker never caught that Fish as his Companion Peter Thomas actually got it in the net. I think this is a big dose of sour grapes and is not an opinion that I share. What do you think please?
No way that fish was 44lb ! walker made a lot of money as the record holder he was a liar and a cheat. Right from the start us anglers being taken for a ride by the rich
The carp was placed in London zoo you twat 😂 and I believe it’s final weight was 46lb
The man was a legend. What are you except nothing
Walker and Thomas roughly weighed it at over 41lb us2 sets of scales side by side it was then weighed and witnessed properly by Weights and Measures personnel who had no need to lie. The fish definitely weighed 44lb other photos show its girth which was massive.
