I enjoyed your video, and agree with you. Intuition when reading the cards is great, but it needs to be based on the existing structure in order to really be effective. I’ve had readings from people who clearly had no understanding of the card meanings, they just did their own thing…..and those readings, while imaginative, didn’t resonate at all. I’ve also had readings from people who don’t ever move away from the textbook definitions, and those readings, while they came closer, were also sorely lacking. Nuance and comprehension are key to effective readings, just like they’re essential to understanding and enjoying an epic novel. It takes some people more effort to learn, but it’s absolutely worth it, in all areas of life.
    I’ll stop rambling now 😂

I love the ramble! And you are so right 😆 I've had readings from both types as well and can say that I share your sentiment in regards to how the readings felt. Many thanks for the kind and thoughtful comment 💕

I enjoyed your explanation of what it means to read the cards, rather than just knowing what they mean. I am about 5 months into my self-led tarot study and am now beginning to delve more into the intuitive side of reading. Watching this helped to clarify for me this approach which comes so naturally to me is indeed the right one. It took me a long time to trust myself, and the messages I recieve. Never really considered myself to be clairvoyant in any capacity, yet my readings are always accurate and becoming more insightful the more I go on! Just discovered your channel (and have actually never commented on UA-cam before but felt compelled to). Thank you, I look forward to learning more from you

Thank you for your video - I do agree, tarot is a language to pratice. And I also do agree on that its important to both train intuitiv side and the studies behind the systems ❤❤

Cool video. I'm a writer and lover of words and yet there are moments when language seems oh so limited. This "border" or "limit" is where I feel intuition takes over, especially when I read tarot. Yes, I've memorized collectively agreed upon meanings for the cards, but things get deep when "words" start the conversation but I allow my intuition to take over. Like slang or an inside joke betwen old friends that doesn't need to be finished - the intuitive conversion with spirit / the cards helps me "know" what i need to know and convey to others. So for me, I very much agree that i'm creating a language with my cards/spirit and the more fluent i become, the deeper the conservation gets and that's very cool indeed.

What great framing of the idea. Your exercises sound fantastic.

Yes yes yes!!! My most used 3 card spread is: "(Card 1, core of situation) because (card 2, reason) so (card 3, direction to move in)." I literally use conjunctions! I totally agree that knowing the definitions of words- reason- is a helpful prereq to stringing them together into sentences- intuition. Great topic! 💕🌻💕

Linguistics major here! So interesting! What I like about the cards is that they share a knowledge beyond words. I often get a feeling about a card that is so complex that words don't seem to do it justice. I agree study + intuition is essential for a complete picture. You always give me something to think about!💜

Also a fan of the shirt. Yes, sorting out the language of not just one card but the dialoge between cards is key. I am the hesitant beginner. Currently collecting. Just recieved the Dal? edition today. Thrilled. Yesterday the Golden Dawn edition arrived. Wow. So much info. I have the Thoth deck, which I do want to become fluent in eventually and of course Rider Waite. Oddly enough, when I went through my collection and related books I came across a surprise deck I did not know I had, nor any clue how it came to me, the Zerner-Farber deck. A sign? Of course it is. I also like that your sentimental decks video got some VRs which I watched and liked. You and your friends deserve a much wider audience. Thanks for continuing to post these videos.

Ah, you are way too kind! Collecting and learning is such an exciting experience, and I would definitely say that finding the Zerner-Farber deck is a sign if I've ever seen one 😆 Much luck and well wishes to you on your studies! 🧡

Having intuition and imagination as well as a solid understanding of card meanings…this makes me think of my relationship to music. I can read and play music, but I don’t seem to be able to create my own music or reproduce music from ear. I’m lacking some skill/fluency there. Thank you so much for these thoughts👏🙏

I love this so much, James. I felt very prepared to become fluent in the language of tarot because I’ve studied literature and creative most of my life. These kinds of exercises give me life. Thank you so much for this topic.

Just randomly looking for tarot info & found this channel. I'm absolutely distracted by this guy's beautifully perfect hair lol
There an Envy card in Thoth deck? 😂

This was so good! (I’m having an existential epiphany here! LOL) It made me think of two things… First, continuing with the language theme, it made me think of those memes where it’s a paragraph of words with their letters mixed up but you can still read it. The other thing was similar to your literary comparison but my background is in music (I was a music education major) and now I think that very much subconsciously has effected how I read the cards and why I read the way I do. I’m a Pip reader because for me I started feeling caged in by the scenes… I have my meanings for the cards based on numerology and the suit aspects but I don’t like having a scene on the card casting a value judgment on if something is good or bad (Thank you Tom Benjamin! His UA-cam channel was a revelation to me in many ways). I prefer to let the question and the cards around as a group provide that context. Similar to what you were talking about with the cards as a sentence I think it also works in context to music… My favorite spread is the Council of 13 that I also learned from Tom. It’s a 13 card spread that has no assigned position meaning within the spread but instead you read it as a series of 6 three card spreads working together in a single reading. The reason I love this is because if that 3 of Swords pops up in an RWS deck you, or at least the person you’re reading for, is going to have a visceral reaction to the image… but with a Pip deck using this kind of method I can look to the cards around it and decide if (in musical terms) that’s a Major 3 or a Minor 3… Are those 3 cards creating a Major Chord (Happy), Minor Chord (Sad), Diminished Chord (Crushing), Augmented Chord (Overwhelmed) etc… So instead of looking at 13 cards you’re looking at 6 “Chords” all in context to one piece of “Music.” Sorry if I’m rambling but this triggered a moment of “OH…” for me LOL! Maybe subconsciously this is why this style of reading seemed so right for me because academically it’s so in tune to the music I’ve spent so much of my life studying!

Oooh, music and tarot, I like that! I'm sure you know plenty and can use the cards in some really fun and interesting ways connected to sound and such 😆 I also agree with your feelings on pip decks versus greater illustrated cards, and that council spread sounds divine, I will have to try it! Many thanks for stopping by and sharing some words of wisdom friend 💚💚💚
