Awesome man ty
Any time! Thanks for watching!
awesome bro, question, do you sand the guitar again after applying the celar matte or just let it be?
Thank you! Nope, no sanding! I made sure to get the coats as even as possible from the start of the color coats, all through the clear coat. No sanding after the clear. If you do any level sanding, you have to spray another final coat so the last coat is right off the gun or spray can.
You did a great job mate! Is one can enough?
Thanks man! I used 3 cans of the Tamiya paint, and yes one can of the matte clear coat was enough. :)
Any issues with the final outcome after 3 months? I am probably going to do an Explorer the same. Looks good man.
Not at all! Still looks as good as day one! I wish I could share a picture on here of it all put together a couple months later. It’s held up great, I wouldn’t mind one myself lol. Thank you! An explorer would look awesome!
Just one more question, did you have to use a matte sealer or did you just leave it flat black. I am starting on the explorer tomorrow LOL!!!!@@guitarcpr
Nice! That’s so exciting! Let me know how it goes and I can’t wait to see how it turns out! Yes I most definitely put a clear finish over the matte black. Quite a few coats. The trick is that it was a matte clear lacquer. I wish I had some footage of it for the video! You have to spray it on flawlessly because you can’t wetsand or buff the final outcome. What you spray is what you get lol. Just make sure the color coats look good before the clear. I used Mohawk’s Tone Finish Clear and the sheen was called “Flat”. They also have one called “Dead Flat” which is even more matte!!! Also these are lacquers so just make sure your color coat is lacquer compatible. :)
Thank you so much for your responses. I'll keep you posted on it. I am sure it will be played on a cover song on our channel. Thanks again for your help.@@guitarcpr
Well done. Some gold hardware would be fire
Thank you! It would be! The customer chose to put on a gold neck plate, black hardware, with a steel pickguard. It came out looking pretty cool!
What grit sandpaper did you use?
Hey Kozi! For which step? I did not final sand or buff the clear coat since it is a matte finish. All sanding was done before painting, which was about 350-400 grit.
I gotcha. I actually looked up the paint that you used in the video and the guy at the store said that it was for plastics only and could potentially hurt the guitar. Would you still recommend it or another alternative?

Yes it is sold for plastics and for car models, but I’ve yet to have any issues with it at all. I really like how Tamiya sprays and how consistent the colors are, plus they have a wide variety of colors. It is a form of lacquer, so once it is cured after about a day, the final nitro clear goes on very nicely and I haven’t had any bad reactions. Hope this helps!
aye bro can you tell me the steps? from sanding to finishing, cuz i want to do that too
Hey man, you’re gonna want to sand your surface to 320 or 400 grit, and get it as flat and smooth as possible. If it’s bare wood, you will need a few coats of primer, and sand the primer with 400 grit sandpaper. Then you will spray a few coats of flat black paint. Then follow up with a few coats of flat clear coat. There is no final sanding or sanding between clear coats, so just lay the coats on as clean as possible. Let me know if you have any questions! Have fun man!
@@guitarcprdid you just use only 2 things? just paint and coat? nothing else right?
@@guitarcpr and also do i need to wait for the black paint to dry and then spray the coat? if yes, how long to wait? thanks
(im not really good at english)
Yes in this video on this guitar, I used just paint and clear coat. The body already had finish on it, so I scuffed it up to help the paint stick. If you take the guitar down to the wood, then you will need a primer before painting.
Yes you will need to wait for the paint to dry before clear coating. I’d say a couple hours should be okay, but it may be best to wait overnight for it to dry before clear coating.
