    Thank you Ursuline. Im very accustomed to some condescending reviews and that’s ok, so I was pleasantly surprised at your positive and objective view. I loved hearing how knowledgeable you are about your art and you are very articulate. Thank you for the acceptance you showed to not only me but art in general. When I come to Australia, I’d love to give you a ticket to my show if you want to come hear some “basic” music 😜. Chow

      Lindsey!! I am blown away that you watched this, thank you so much for taking the time. You are so welcome, and I am sorry that the criticism you’ve received over the years has made an objective take on your music a pleasant surprise! Really respect what you do and the fact that you have dedicated yourself to this path over so many years. I’d absolutely love to come see some “basic” music in action when you’re in Sydney! ❤️😉

    Refreshing perspective! I grew up in a "Classical" household. I know EXACTLY where this attitude comes from. It's such a negative and destructive way to think about music. After all, music is a universal language that transcends time or cultural trends. Music SHOULD be ever-evolving, which this mindset perpetuated in the classical community almost tries to strangulate new ideas. Having studied classical violin for about a decade of my life, I learned that I actually didn't want to be just another violinist playing Tchaikovsky. When I first heard Lindsey, I had that gut reaction that I didn't like her playing, but then I thought - 'Wow, she's revolutionizing the way people see the violin! That's awesome!'

      (Do let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to speak more on or react to in my next upload 🎻)
      Was re-watching your Splitting Hairs interview and a comment you made sparked this suggestion. It was your comment about 'UA-cam algorithms'. I'm speaking of the concept, not the way the 'classical violinist' might have been using it.
      One of the reasons, I assume, that folks post videos is to get exposure (views). Some of the Lindsey Stirling reaction videos have thousands and thousands of views, (I think the highest one is 2.7M). The majority of these reactions are from folks who have no musical background. There was a violin teacher that posted a series of thoughtful critiques of Lindsey but I noticed his videos are no longer available, which is a shame as they were well thought out and I learned a lot.
      You however, have a relevant musical and performance background and an objective mind as demonstrated by this video. Lindsey Stirling has 13M subscribers who are desperately seeking anything Lindsey-ish. There's also a demographic of viewers that is presently 3.3B(!) strong. That's a large pool of potential viewers to bring to your brand. I think that if you can find time, doing a couple of reviews of Lindsey's videos could be a positive for all. You, of course, would benefit from this but you would also be providing a service for folks looking for reviews from a qualified reviewer. (I know I would.) And, obviously Lindsey would love to have some more objective videos about her and given the reaction to the Splitting Hairs video, you could probably do a lot of good in that arena as well. There may be a larger audience in the classical world than we suspect. It would be nice if we all could learn to play together.
      I hope you don't think my suggestion is crass or self-serving in a bad way. I'm sure you probably feel that this would be riding someone's coattails. But, it's not, no more than say, Lindsey collabing with John Legend and others. This is a demand that needs to be addressed, you have the skills and only as a bonus you'd be bringing attention to your brand.. I just want a whole lot of people becoming aware of you.

    Wonder what she’d have to say about Steven Sharp Nelson on his electric cello?
    I’ve never understood why so many of these self-proclaimed “classic” musicians spend so much energy trying to knock down other genres. Bringing down another genre will never elevate your own.

    Thank you! I hear so many people say "she's not playing this" about her music videos, & my reaction to that is "...duh! NOBODY is 'playing this' in music videos; if you want her to be 'playing this', then watch _concert footage,_ not something scripted."
    And I don't understand how they don't know that. This is a medium--music video, I mean, not UA-cam--that's existed since the 1970s. There used to be a whole TV channel that showed nothing but music videos 24/7. To be a professional in the music industry & not understand how this closely-related medium works reeks of feigned ignorance. So, again, thank you for calling that out every time the other reactor dipped into that well.

    Thank you! I appreciate the way you approached this, and the various points you made. I'm an English teacher, and have run into many of the same attitudes about what students enjoy reading. I was fortunate enough to discover some of my own preconceptions and knowledge gaps working with at-risk students early in my career. I found a TED talk that really opened my eyes as I did research on making Shakespeare accessible to my students - you hit here many of the same points (Akala's "Hip-Hop & Shakespeare?"). There is not only one correct, worthwhile, laudable kind of music, just as there is not only one canon of literature an educated person should learn from or enjoy. Thank heavens we have more to choose from to fill our lives with different kinds of beauty, edification, and expression! Very well done.

    You are so right in everything you said, and bravo for staying so calm in your reactions. I'm also a classical violinist, I'm a concertmaster or first violin in the orchestras I play in, I love both classical music AND Lindsey Stirling's songs and I really don't understand why I couldn't :D I think the main reason for that kind of criticism is jealousy. Lindsey composed pop songs FOR violin, that's what was missing, that's what I was looking for, for so long - and she did it. First time I heard her music, I knew I had to get it, play it, for me and for other people to show them that yeah, violin IS fun - and I even made a UA-cam channel. She reinvented violin, made it fun in a new way, made people of all ages like violin, and/or want to start playing the violin. And... She is tremendously successful, has an audience classical musicians or soloists couldn't dream of. In my opinion, her music isn't a threat to classical music, it isn't "basic" (??) and certainly not laughable, on the contrary. Technically, some of her songs are really challenging like classical music pieces can be. Also, classical violinists I know don't all know Lindsey, but the ones who do really like her too. They even give her songs to practice to their students ! I contribute to Lindsey's songs by playing them, I didn't really feel at ease with a talk... But you did it, so thank you !

    If a violinist attends training at their school or via a private tutor they will be "classically" trained more often then not. Being a classical orchestra violinist requires an extraordinary amount of precision. The smallest mistake by any member can ruin the experience for the concert goers. I can see how being under constant pressure to be "perfect" can take the fun out of playing. I was 15 feet away from the stage one time while Lindsey Stirling played and danced. I was surprised to hear only a handful of notes that were "off".

    • @sisterursuline
      @sisterursuline  3 роки тому +15

      Certainly. This is not to disparage classical musicians or the demands of playing that particular genre of music. More to show that gaps in knowledge around other genres and their own unique demands can lead to unfair snap judgements.

I agree with you that there is this elitist mentality in the classical music industry that also is perpetuated in literature and art ( paintings, sculptures, etc). It's divisive when art in all forms should be universal and provide a commonality in beauty in human expression.

    EDIT: I totally wrote this before getting to the part where you mentioned it was called a stroh 😂
    Fun fact, the violin Lindsey Stirling uses for this video clip is called a stroh violin which uses the metal bell as a resonator. They came about in the late 1890s. I’m pretty sure they have one in the display cabinet at Sydney String Centre and if you are familiar with Marcus Holden, he has one too. They’re pretty cool but yeah, not electric.

    Brilliant review of the other musicians 'review' (and I hesitate to even use that word applied to the original video!). The lady doing the original 'review' has basically already made her mind up before she opens her mouth IMHO, and it just comes across as a strong case of "I'm a classical player, this is rubbish".
    You, on the other hand, were objective ( and I really don't know how you lasted THAT long watching the original review before "I've had enough", !!) . Pretty much every single remark in the original review is disparaging, or just downright insulting.
    Lindsey does also play acoustic ('Excalibur' is at least one acoustic she owns), and I enjoy both. Normally I prefer her 'faster' songs, but Between Twilight is very much slower and probably one of my favourite tracks of hers of all time.
    I think BOND had a similar backlash/reaction from the old-guard when they first appeared years ago, yet they were/are all clasically trained (and again, both do play electric and accoustic at times).
    Thanks for actually looking/listening at what was being reviewed, rather than just running off a list of template "this isnt' classical so it's wrong because ...." insults.

    • @sisterursuline
      @sisterursuline  3 роки тому +7

      You’re so welcome and thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. Definitely I agree that Bond had a similar reaction when they entered the scene too. Disparaging artists just isn’t constructive and I think it’s very important to be able to separate what you personally like from your biases about other genres in style. This review just struck me as having many knowledge gaps as to what contemporary players actually do and deal with - completely different objectives and challenges to what classical musicians face - so it was important to me to show that there’s a range of skills that contemporary musicians need to develop, which are unfortunately not often considered when these kind of reviews are made. Thank you so much for watching!

    I'll be honest, I went to a very music focused school as rock guitarist that was full of people like the first classical reactor, it was a nightmare. When I later learned classical violin in my mid 20's I had such a prejudice against classical musicians I went in to my first lesson ready to do battle. I remember being so surprised when my teacher asked me if I already played and I mentioned improv guitar. I watched a scholarship graduate from a national conservatoire run a mile at the mention of improvisation.
    Attitudes like the first reactor create so many barriers and divisions in music when everyone is good in their own way, I wish there were people like you in my school growing up.

    I enjoyed your analysis of Lindsey Stirling. What she fails to acknowledge is that all the famous classical composers are famous because they broke the rules of their day. And just because modern classical composers, like James Honer and John Williams incorporate a wider variety of instruments and styles doesn't make them less great than the famous composers of the 1700's - early 1900's. I'm sure you are familiar with 2Cellos, I would love to hear your analysis of them. I am also sure you aren't familiar with Unlucky Morpheus, though I could be mistaken, they are a Japanese metal band with a violin front and center in their band. An analysis of them would also be terrific.

    Thank you for this video. Didn't realize it was such a big issue in the classical music community, but I'm not surprised. There is always gatekeeping. Fact of the matter is, Stirling has made violin fun and exciting for a lot of younger people and younger musicians. I'm sure there are plenty of parents that are happy that their kid has some music they love to play when they are practicing.
    Also, you're definitely right--commercial success doesn't mean it's bad. Also, "basic" is often more accessible. Not to say her music is "basic," it isn't.
    Anyway, I hope you keep making videos. I'll drop a sub in case you do. Cheers

    Wouldn't be surprised that they ARE playing, but ambient sounds, like boots on the ground, the rustle of clothing and other noise makes it almost mandatory that the music is overdubbed on the visual portion. Not to mention random stuff lije maybe a plane flying by.

    A shame that she took down her vid, she really needs a lesson in attitude towards other forms of music from Henk Port who himself is a classicaly trained legend, but his catchphrase is good music is good music period. No need to look down on other styles just because they do something different.
    Also thank for doing this video it was great and educational.

    Just out of curiosity, where do you think the piezo pickup is picking up the vibration? For some reason or other you don't explain why the part of the string between the fingerboard and the bridge is considered the most "resonant" place to bow on an acoustic instrument. I doesn't really have anything to do with string length. It has to do with how the string vibration is transferred to what ever is amplifying it. In an acoustic instrument, as I'm sure you know, the bridge works as a pickup transferring the vibration of the strings to the top plate and from there to the soundpost and so on. In an electronic violin the pickup transforms the string vibration to electric signals and sends them to the amp right? But where do you pick up the vibration, well the bridge seems like the obvious place right? Seeing as the strings are tightened on it so their vibration is deliberately transferred to it, no? The other place where the vibration is transferred is the nut, seeing as the fingerboard gets increasingly closer to the strings as you get closer to the nut, as opposed to, lets say, the bridge, that means that the string has less room to vibrate, so less vibration to pick up. So no, it doesnt magically make it more okey to bow on the fingerboard even it is an electric violin. You sure can do it, and you can make some interesting sounds out of it, heck, you can even bow behind the bridge. That doesn't mean though that the most optimal place to bow is between the fingerboard and the bridge.

    • @sisterursuline
      @sisterursuline  2 роки тому

      On most instruments, depending on the effect you want, bowing between the end of the fingerboard and the bridge is optimal. As I’m sure you’re aware, there are many different designs in piezo pickups - some are built into the bridge, some are under the bridge foot, some are even fixed to the top plate of the instrument. It’s not particularly critical since they will pick up the vibrations of the strings in any one of these positions, either via the bridge, the point where the bridge foot and body meet, or via the body itself. As I explained, the reason bowing between the fingerboard and bridge is optimal is to do with string length, however with the caveat I mentioned being that it depends on what sound quality you are trying to achieve. What’s your point? If you don’t think bowing somewhere between the end of the fingerboard and the bridge is optimal, where do you have left to bow?

    Well articulated. Music is an art form. Is Picasso a master and Van Gogh a basic peasant? Is Neil Young less (or more) than Luciano Pavarotti? I love reaction videos because people discovering artists I have loved is a beautiful thing to watch. To see classically trained vocalists react to modern pop music, or metal, or hip hop is quite interesting as they find so many things that are the same and that so many of the differences are just performance choices. Please bring your training as a classical instrumentalist to visit other instrumental genres. Examples could be Phil Collins, Jethro Tull, or even Electric Light Orchestra. OK all from my past but as I said I enjoy watching people discover. Trust your heart, you are on the right path.

    Cool reaction - but sweet baby Jesus, the woman was painfully literal and kind of dully ignorant. She skipped over the difference between electric and regular instruments, she griped about (or ignored) the fact that this was a music video so 'she's not really playing an instrument' and seemed ignorant of the fact that the video was fantasy 'music doesn't really do that!'. Sorry, didn't seem good-humored to me, she seemed embarrassed as heck she was doing this and a bit confused. Like a history professor reviewing LOTR who politely thinks it's crap because it has Elves in it. Maybe she needs to wake up, first. PS: Yes, I am a cranky birdie and speak my mind, even if it's a bit rude. Just kinda me.

    Imagine hurling criticism at an electric violin player with snarky comments like "this is very strange but sound waves don't attack anyone". When not being very well rounded in music knowledge or her own instrument or physics for that matter. How does this person even listen to and interpret the classical music she is being a snob about if she can't comprehend imagery and things being metaphorical.

    i also know it's not this channel saying it xD just the woman in the other video is so cringe.. she shouldn't play violin if she's going to think she's better than anyone else... real musicians knows how it's important to have other people supporting us UPWARDS and not downwards... but i play in a small village windband thingy and i don't get involved with their shits so much because i know people thinks they're so much better than anyone else... so i just mind my own business

    It's appalling to see how little this "classically trained violinist" knows about the world outside her tiny bubble. Not being able to tell music videos from live performances? Come on! Can she tell movies from the theatre? Creativity and imagination really seem to be lacking here...as well as basic understanding of physics...
    "Sound waves don't attack anyone"...I beg to differ...sound has been used as a weapon for a long time. Currently it's used for crowd control and to create areas of denial. It even has been used on commercial ships to deter Somali pirates off the Horn of Africa. The effects range from making you feel uneasy to bursting your ear drums. But if somebody were even more malign, such a weapon could even be used to kill you. The Soviets even destroyed buildings in some experiments during the Cold War.
    I mean, she doesn't need to know all the details but does she even grasp how the sound from her instrument is coming about?

    I wish classical musicians would stop making themselves the b all end all to music. Violins are one of the most versatile instruments out there and I am proud to say that I have started to play my granddad's violin at age 54. I don't know what kind of music I want to play but I know part of it will be gospel church music as I love the Lord and want to praise him with that like my aunt did with the piano when I was 5. She used to wake me up from naps playing church hymns on an old out of tune piano. Viva Le violin and Viva Le fiddle.
