A sensational second half strike from Dimitrio Andro earned Robinhood of Suriname a 1-0 victory over Jamaican side Cavalier in the first leg of the 2023 Concacaf Caribbean Cup Final on Thursday night at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadion in Paramaribo, Suriname.
It was a cautious first half from the two teams. A Carlos Da Silva header in the 15' was the first real chance of the match for Robinhood before Shaquille Cairo followed up with an attempt in the 33'.
The Cavalier attack was quiet in the first 45 minutes but kicked into gear in the second stanza and tournament-leading scorer Shaniel Thomas almost broke the deadlock in the 55'.
Minutes later Robinhood GK Jonathan Fonkel was called upon to make a soaring save to deny Ronaldo Robinson the game's first goal.
Just when it looked like Cavalier had the home side on the ropes and were set to break through, Robinhood turned the half on its head and took a 1-0 lead through Dimitrio Andro, who launched a right-footed rocket that went blazing into the top right corner of net in the 69'.
Andro's excellent strike made for a vibrant finish, with Robinhood buoyed by momentum, while Cavalier looked to respond with an equalizer.
In the end, a second goal was not to be had, leaving Robinhood with the advantage going into next week's decisive second leg.
