  • "... it is only by allowing horses to move on a free rein, and not in holding them in, that success may be obtained.
Riders who hold in their horses are insignificant riders and will never advance . Riders who give their horses freedom are those who will taste the delicacies of equestrian art." Nuno Oliveira

The horse should easily follow and accept light contact, but never holding them in.

What are your thoughts on the German Scales of Training?

Thank you for connecting, thats an interesting question. Having never worked in the German training world I wont be specific. I did see Reiner Klimke years ago, do a lap of honour with the rein, attracted by gravity, held lightly in one hand as his horse happily performed all the GranPrix movements like a dancer. For me its all about how the horse feels... how is the expression and attitude ?... thats what counts. Most systems dont fit all horses and at the end of the day it comes down to the feel, timing and practice of the person so there will be good and bad in all systems ... if that makes sense ?
      What do you think ?

Well...and are we giving the horse a body to listen to? A lot goes into that. It takes awareness, perfect practice, and self discipline to get consistent and get a harmonious conversation going. It's art, and one never reaches the summit. Just keep climbing the mountain and enjoying the view as you go.
