No, the problem is that they didn't reach 19.6% as there were many EVs that were pre-registered not actually sold and are languishing on dealers forcourts or hidden away in fields. They also delayed the registration of ICE cars all in the effort to meet the ZEV Mandate which they failed miserably. So this year they have to sell 28% EVs but they already have a backlog of all the 2024 cars that they pre-registered so good luck with that.

I'm considered by anyone that knows me to be a petrol head, but I have now an EV (and still a Diesel Jaguar) but I would not want to return to petrol/diesel as my daily driver. In 2 years of ownership I've driven the diesel half a dozen times because of range. Unless you need to do regular round trips of over 250/280 miles (and would need to public charge) you can't beat them. Try one if you havent already, they changed my mind very quickly. Battery technology may be accelerating at a force, but these things take time to implement, and time is a luxury that the ICE Motor Manufacturers don't have because of ludicrously short time scales imposed upon them by our politicians. Leading to
China’s Impending domination of the world's Battery and EV markets which will kill European motor manufacturing putting at risk millions literally millions of jobs.
But how is China Powering this industrial revolution. By burning fossil fuels. The simple fact is that they've invested billions in a new dedicated train line solely to provide the Millions of tonnes needed of coal each day to power the multitudes of new coal fired power stations. Just to keep up with the demand for electricity that is required to build the EV's for western markets.
When will our MP’s wake up and realised that this push towards EV's in such a ludicrously short period of time will end with millions joining the dole queue, and all within the next 5 years so much for a government that boasted that their policies would lead to growth in the economy. This gives the power companies full control of what they can charge per unit of electricity and when you can charge. With the governments Net Zero plan the future of a stable grid does not look good. This has happened recently in Australia during a Heat wave and the grid was struggling to cope and the local power company switched off all the air conditioners of the people who had smart meters. There’s an old saying that “the predictable effects of a policy IS the objective of the policy”.
It’s predictable that several large mass manufactures of cars are going to go bankrupt.
    Why?
They are hindered in their sale of ICE cars, because of the ramping up of the % of total which must be EVs.
They are hindered in their sales of EV cars, because of the undercutting of prices by heavily subsidised Chinese companies.
They already have a record inventory of completed cars which they’re unable to sell & which are killing then through storage charges.
They cannot easily cut their costs substantially and swiftly. Plant closures are not done lightly, but unavoidably is going to happen. Incidentally, those plants will never reopen, because the future looks even worse. There are no catalysts for recovery on the horizon.

The UK government officially scrapped the plan to ban gas boilers by 2035 on January 5, 2025. This decision was part of a broader shift in policy under the new Labour government, which aims to balance environment goals with practical consideration. I wonder what this means for the motorist?

    • @KB-uu4fy

Unfortunately I think this a bit of a smoke screen. The price of gas is becoming so high that people will not be able to afford to pay for the gas to use them in any case. I only use my gas boiler heating for a couple of hours a day now in the winter, but my monthly bill is around £200 a month. The boiler is a modern efficient one and I live in a fairly small house. So in my humble opinion the government know that us plebs will simply be priced out of using them, so job done, agenda met.

Kia I wouldn’t want an EV in the UK without a heat pump. The new plastic box looking EV3 I believe only offers a heat pump if you buy the top spec.this unfortunately pushes the price beyond £40000 meaning we get hammered in road tax.Now why don’t KIA wake up to this and cut out all the unnecessary gimmick car aids and just stick to the basics and fit a heat pump keeping the car under £40000.VW have decided we don’t need a proper dashboard and stick a cheap looking after thought on the dash, and do away with proper easy to use buttons and knobs which incidentally would still work if that screen with everything built in should fail, which would render your car useless.,and then fit driver aids.the irony, trying to adjust your screen whilst driving is dangerous.thats why mobiles and banned whilst driving.Older cars with their tried and tested design worked perfectly. You can drive and adjust radio, temp fan speed etc without taking your eyes off the road, and with proper infrastructure their we can refuel in seconds.and check out the car history when buying second hand.I can’t afford to buy off a forecourt. How do you check out how well a battery has been looked after when buying from the used market.Insurance for an EV is shocking.youtube is full of videos all promoting Ev,s..I don’t see many videos showing you the pros and cons.Ie cost of replacement batteries.Real cost of servicing .poor infrastructure.shocking rip off prices charged for public charging,IF this govt were serious about going electric they,d have invested heavily into infrastructure. The truth is they don’t want us owing a car at all.Big brother has decided that we don’t need a car..It’s only for the privileged few.I Can see the UK flooded with cheap made Chinese EV.S making the CCP even more powerful.

They should not be forcing the transition at all. Let people buy EVs if they want to. Let the market decide. In truth, the Lithium battery has bogged down the whole industry. We need to change to a different type that will be much improved in range - this is why they are so expensive still, after all these years. A typical EV battery is still 500 - 800 Lbs in weight. Compare that to a full tank of gas - 80 -100 Lbs. If a battery technology that weighs 200 Lbs in a car can deliver, say, 100 miles - then we'd be having a conversation. But right now the weight gap is far too much. It's a monster.

The problem is the number is a percentage of all sales. Without buying any more EV, the % can be greatly increased by simply lowering the sales of ICE cars. This can be done by slapping a hefty tariff on them. I'm not in favour of the EV grant, these historically have just been used to prop up the manufacturers, the consumer did not benefit much of this grant. Additionally, manufacturers need to make smaller affordable EV's. There are just too many of these giant SUV being made, that is not what the mass market consumer wants.

This is something that really needs addressing as around 60% of properties are street parking only. The beginning of the end isn't it !!! I do not want an EV and even if I did, couldn't afford or want to spend £30k+ on a vehicle, I watched a YT vlog recently where the owner of an EV which cost £130k+ after 3 years of ownership was worth less than £50k, that's just ridiculous, and I'll be sticking with my 2009 Audi TDI for as long as I possible can.
It's the beginning of the end !!! we will at some point be forced into Pay Per Mile, whether we want it or not, even though Sadiq Kahn says not, and the reason.... well !!! you may well ask !!! he was recently given a knighthood, which now allows him to sit in the house of lords, which gives him the power to oversee laws of the land... can you see where this is going, yup !!! pay per mile across the UK.
The big question is, why is it the UK 'has' to be the leader in this NetZero claptrap ??? when the rest of the world has come to realise it's either not achievable in the given time limit or just complete nonsense to start with and doesn't give a hoot while they spurge billions of emissions into the atmosphere, but the UK "has" to be the leader otherwise they say we will be left behind... what nonsense !!! but Ed the lunatic, is possessed with it.
What's happened to all the research with synthetic low emission fuels, which are useable in ICE powered vehicles, why isn't that being pushed into focus, which would allow us to still use the vehicles we currently drive, saving on all the emissions waste on the production of EV's, and the scrappage of perfectly good and still useable ICE powered vehicles just to push the NetZero by 2030, just how is that environmentally friendly or a good idea, more like "mental"
All it amounts to in reality is they want us out of our privately owned cars/motorbikes/vans etc and doing what we're told, while they (2 tier Keir predominantly) fly around in private jets going to COP (out) 29 etc, etc, etc... at OUR expense.
I could possibly have been persuaded into a Hybrid, but now they have even made those spawn of the devil, I feel, there truly is no hope for the health of the car industry in the UK going forward, this mental government will kill it and in the process make many, many people out of work.

Some councils allow it others are undecided and say you need planning. There are charging posts that can be installed on pavements along with utilising street light posts. All of these things are in place under different councils around the country it just needs the government/ councils to get there act together. Flats are the bigger problem it would need a consent from the landlord to install changes. Failing that you would have to do what people have done for the last 80 years when they won’t / petrol /diesel go to a fuel station.
