Didn't they make a joke about the David Boreanaz scheme in season 5? Like "we didn't model Philbert's home after you, Bojack. But we did go to David Boreanaz' house once and that gave us inspiration". That really made me chuckle.
I keep hearing this, but I didn't catch it when I watched! I'll be rewatching Season 5 soon
@@Johnny2Cellos I think it was in the first episode of season 5 :)
Someone noticed!!!!
Oh my god callbacks like these is just one of the reasons why I love this fucking show, I didn't even notice this joke
The continuity of this show is literally the best I've ever experienced, right down to the fact that PC names her daughter after the imaginary great-grandchild she imagined having.
I also love that the Boreanaz House scheme is why the Philbert set looks like Bojack's house in season 5. This show is so good about sticking to its continuity!!
That's one of the dumbest decision Netflix character ever made. I knew BoJack should have brought Todd with him.
Maybe the pilot episode 1 was just a facade to get the people who like American Dad and Family Guy to sit down and give Bojack a chance and then pull the rug under them to show Bojack Horseman's true colors in later episodes.
Or maybe it was just to get the approval from the higher up executives for the show to get green lit?
Hahaha I love the Family Guy bait and switch theory
I didn't hated the 1st episode , but n° 3 and 9 are awful to me .
This theory was confirmed by the Creator in interviews. He pitched the show as starting as a typical dumb adult cartoon full of joked that would change into a dramedy by season end
@@niederman and then as it went on the drama heavily overtook the comedy in an amazing way.
Season 6 is the best adult animation in existence hands down
@@Johnny2Cellos well its not a theory. Bob Waxburg actually came out and said that he wanted to do a bait and switch in an interview
I like to say BoJack horseman is the most human show I’ve ever seen for a show about talking anthropometric animals
Exactly!
It reminds me of adult regular show
I'm barely mid way through season 5 of my first time viewing the series and I can't believe Sarah Lynn's death was that early. It hit me so hard.
This season summary is just perfect, I couldn't add a thing. Looking forward to the other season breakdowns!
I have begun to rewatch Bojack Horseman and it's such a big contrast to see how different the characters are at the start after seeing what they're like at the end. Especially Bojack himself; first 6 episodes he is such an arsehole, but after he meets Herb again in E8 he starts that journey that makes him so relatable and his story so touching. The changes are huge but are reached seamlessly and believably; masterful character development.
Ace review. Love your channel and enthusiasm for this amazing program.
For me I feel like the show really begins on Ep 4 with Diane’s family; the first 3 episodes being more of a general introduction, from there on all of season 1 is consistently good.
I think it made a big step up at Episode 4, which is actually the Zoe’s and Zelda episode, Diane’s family is episode 5. I do think it was consistently funny and engaging after that, but also still contained some tired tropes. It’s great, though, I’m only hard on it because the following seasons are so perfect
Johnny 2 Cellos Zoe and Zeldana’s was the part where I felt things had potential, and the next one cemented it for me. For some reason I thought Diane’s was ep 4. Overall I guess I was half right.
Ironically the show starts rocky but immediately picks itself up and tells it’s story.
Downer Ending is by far the best episode of the season, it is where BoJack goes on this drug trip and we see all the things that his life could have been or possibly will be in the future. Say Anything was the first attempt at a compelling story with Princess Carolyn, but nothing else stood out to me. The Telescope I would say is where I started to see the real passion of the show, whilst Downer Ending is where I saw that passion come in full force.
Sarah Lynn's voice reminded me of Mindy Cohn (Velma on Scooby-Doo) first watch.
My favorite episode from season 1 are "BoJack Hates The Troops," "Zoes And Zeldas," "Live Fast, Diane Nguyen," "Say Anything," and "The Telescope."
OMG I never knew the backwards talking scene was actually saying something. Hilarious.
Yeah... but I had no idea what the hell are they talking about. Also nice music by Death Grips... #LetMeIn
To me, the biggest problem with early bojack is best surmised with a running joke in ep2, where bojack keeps getting put on hold by princess carolyn, and the song's cats.
The whole "joke" is she's a cat, and it's playing cats, which is fine enough for a 10 second-ish gag, but it happens I believe 3 seperate times during the episode, with each time being about 15-20 seconds
i love that you made this video x')
South Park review Wednesday, Season 2 of BoJack this weekend/early next week :)
yaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!
I think you should have mentioned that this spoils future seasons, and not just season 1.
I did mention it! It says it in the description, and also this entire part here: 0:07-0:18
I'm sorry if you got spoiled!
Bojack is one of those shows that proves that cartoon =/= for kids.
Actually One trick Pony was the start of me not liking Diane. Her deciding to go against a someone she was beginning to consider a friend’s wishes about how he was portrayed and then getting revenge by releasing it any way along with putting her name on the book ultimately made begin to think she was selfish.
In future seasons she does something similar to Mr. PB. Diane gets to be the “glue” but doesn’t even really apologize for being shitty while judging others for it. And this episode was probably the start of realizing she won’t have to really apologize for doing shitty things.
She tried her best, damn it! She was just trying to write her book... I don't care if she's a Ghostwriting or not.
Future seasons feelsbadman
People actually like the kid in the trench coat? Wtf? I hated that gag tbh. It was a funny for 10 seconds thing that lasted more than 10 seconds
2 kids n the coat. or one midget and a kid, either way its 2 people
"Now get the fuck out of my house"
Tbh my least favorite episode is S01E02
But just because I can't stand Neal McBeal and his non-existant dibs
My too, but calling troops jerk is still wrong... #NoMercy #LetMeIn #WeAreNXT
If this show doesn’t end with a horse walks into a bar joke I will be fucking raging
How did you know the Bojack-Sarah Lynn hooking up thing was gonna come up in later seasons????
Moment of silence for the people who were put off by the first 4 episodes and stopped watching
bojack's the best
yep
Season 1 is top three for me tbh
Nice!
calling season 1 brilliant is a bit of a strecth but its good
hey! i love the video, and i know its old, but please put trigger warnings for topics like suicide. although a minor charater, its a bit much for some. thanks!
Sadly, the first episode of the series is not the first time BoJack meet Diane, but season 5 episode "Mr. Peanutbutter's Boos" does.
Dude when you make a season 1 review please dont mention stuff from season 5
Dude I have a huge disclaimer at the very beginning of the video explaining that I’m going to talk about all 5 seasons. It also says in the description spoilers for seasons 1-5
The Telescope was the episode that changed my perception of this show for the better.
He could breakdown this episode if he have to.
There's another big Sarah Lynn foreshadow when she hooks up with BoJack where she says "the only drug I need, is HORSE."
And then the reason she ends up dying is by abusing a drug sharing BoJack's name.
Horse is just the nickname for Heroine tho.
@Instrumentality1000 s wss cfd
Old school niggas call dope “horse”. That’s why it’s “bojack brand”
@Andrew Wheeler, I never thought about it like that😧 but I did think about was how in the season 1 episode Downer Ending while Sarah Lynn, Todd, and BoJack are high she and Todd try to kill BoJack, which is seen as funny but when Sarah Lynn talks about how “crazy” it would be if BoJack was killed by his TV
daughter foreshadows how BoJack ends up technically killing his TV daughter, Sarah Lynn.
@@safkaesque I didn't think about that!
The pilot episode does not do the show justice. Luckily the season recovered quick and I feel the last moments of the season really set the series up perfectly. The way Bojack begs Diane to tell him he can still be a better person is heartbreaking and gives us a glimpse of what is to come.
Yet my favorite episode in Season One is the Telescope. It honestly is the episode that made me love this show. The way Herb tells Bojack he's not forgiving him is so realistic and human and shows the type of character Bojack is.
Daniel Landers honestly that episode got to me, as I personally have situations with my life in the past I didn’t, and probably won’t ever, get closure on.
I mean, it wasn't Ibsen....😒
But it was an ok season 😉😉😉
I feel that the show started to find its identity and style with the episode Zoe/Zelda. It really set the stage for what the show would explore and become with the second to last episode finally showcasing how dark, imaginative and powerfully effective the show would become to gain such a strong online following.
theprowler18 when Dwane gave that speech to Diane about how people don’t change, I feel that introduced the darkness that is Bojack Horseman.
My favorite episode is "The Telescope" too. I mean how could one incident could lead to the end of a friendship?
I noticed that when Beatrice is telling Bojack to perform, he’s hiding underneath a table that’s covered by a table cloth, much like how Sarah Lynn was hiding under a table covered in a table cloth when Bojack tells her to entertain the audience.
DAMN good catch I did not put this together
@@Johnny2Cellos How dare he say something to a child?! He was not allowed to say that!
@Loughlin McKay, I noticed that too!
Season one was really just setting up these characters and showing who they are and what the show can be. Season 2-5 is when they start diving deep into these characters. The writing just gets better and better as the show goes on. I thought SL's death was the darkest it was going to get...then they do the lobotomy episode and just the entire 4th season...then I didn't think it could get any darker than that and then season 5 comes along. Season 1 was almost kind of like a rough draft...just showing that these are the characters and we're going to set up their flaws now let everything take off after that...
That's what it felt like.
I agree, they were figuring it all out, and while I don't think it all worked, I do think they perfectly established what DID work. It's why seasons 2-5 are so perfect
Im so sad that it's ending
@@bebelperim8473 but at least the actual character arcs are actually coming full circle and resolving. Todd finds happiness, PC gets Judah back, bonds with ruthie, like everything coming together. Now it is just the messy stuff to resolve.
The cabin scenes during BoJack's drug trip are even better when you notice the connections between them and s4e2
Exactly. The setting is also in general very similar (especially when you see the time lapses in both episodes).
One more thing I can think of off the top of my head is that in the dream, BoJack said he 'ran into Ed at the Hardware Store'
im sad he said season 6 and beyond....
1st season was just character development and funny gags until 1x6
9:19 I actually never forwarded that moment and now when I hear it going forward I'm just laughing my ass off lol
I remember not watching Bojack Horseman because of seeing on Wikipedia that season 1 was very meh and it got better only after s1. I wasn’t enthusiastic about trudging through a season of trash before getting to the good stuff. But I honestly liked it from the beginning.
In season 1, before they do it, Sarah Lynn tells Bojack: the only drug I need is *Horse* . Which is also slang for *Heroin* .
Coincidence?!?! 🤔
No coincidence. She dies of an heroin overdose that is called Bojack so
It was ALLL foreshadowing
When she says the only Drug she needs is horse.
To her saying about Dying Young.
Sarah Lynn says that the Cast of Horsin’ Around “won’t see each other until the Next Funeral....” in season 2
And Horse Being the street name For heroin said also in season 3.
Even in the Most Tragic Episode Of all “That’s too much Man...” The Beginning it shows Sarah Lynn has a painting above her as Ophelia’s Suicide foreshadowing her Death.(Just a Small Easter Egg)
And The Saying “BoJack Kills” is foreshadowing for Sarah Lynn’s overdose of BoJack.
BoJack Enabled Sarah Lynn’s Broken Adulthood and Instilled her persona of being a TV Starlet him and Her momma.
@@Tootz3374 Fuck her!
You should do an analysis like this for every season.
That’s the plan! Hoping to have season 2 up next week and season 3 the following
Oh my god I can't believe you have such a small amount of subscribers. The quality of your videos, the camera, audio, content, analysis, profesionalism made me believe you were at least a few hundred thousand subscribers into the game! Wow your channel is incredible and I absolutely adore everything about your videos, keep up the great work!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that :) I've been making a big effort to step up my game and hopefully my channel will see some big growth this year. These last few weeks have already been my most successful ever.
Loved this video man!, its funny - first time watching the show somehow I started watching from episode 2 without noticing, and I loved that the show just throws characters without introducing them, this is why I first liked the show. I watched the full series second time (and a third), and on the second time I found out my mistake thinking to myself "if I watched it from the first episode I probably wouldn't, watch the second one" and now it's my favorite tv show
Bojack Horseman is the best series at the moment..
I think of the first few episodes are almost like a prologue, where they introduce us to the characters. You have to make us care at least a little bit before you throw people through the ringer.
Glad you made this, I had the exact same thoughts about the awkward pacing and cut away gags, but knowing this part of the show gets refined I'm going to continue watching. I'm excited for the later seasons
It's really unfortunate that many people (including ex friends of mine) decide to watch the first season and then refused to see the rest of it and called the entire series shit when they never saw actually saw it lol
what's sad is that the first scene in the second season bojack's parents were fighting when secretariat read his letter. he didn't hear his advice
Also, the baby horse is named Harper in the Charlotte series.... Harper like Harper Landing aka the town the Michigan lake house is in...
Good one. #LetMeIn
The way I've always seen it, the series starts off super rough and cringe and trying to be what's 'hip' with shows like famiky guy, with odd sexual humor and cutaways.. but once you get more into the show, you see theres more then it let's on.... like Bojack himself.
I like how every season uses fuck only once to emphasize the situation except for season 4 that one was kinda weak
I think Season 4’s was also great! They all seem to emphasize when BoJack ruins a relationship, potentially permanently
Man. I still think about the Charolette hallucination and how it made me cry. I desperately want a life like that and seeing something so idyllic and wholesome when I’ve consistently believed I was unwanted and undeserving of really hurt me at the time, not to mention filled me with this painful yearning.
That's why he haven't seen her for 30 years. 30 FUCKING YEARS!!! Until season 2... 😡😠
#EmbraceTheVision
@@chadkennedy7855 your hashtag just made me go to a Seth Rollins compilation 😂
You know the first scene of the last episode of season 1 gives me the chills it's so powerful and sad
All I could say was ouch.
I actually really like episode 1 and 2 for some reason, great content here, keep it up
Yeah I love BJH the first few episodes I wasn't feeling but I'm glad I stuck with the show
PC is the embodiment of what Kelsey defines as a woman. She does all the work a hero would do for her clients, and gets none of the recognition and is occasionally disliked for even trying
Good job 👍
I didn't know how much I needed this video.
9:43 A113
Good eye!
What is that a reference to again?
@@Beebz29 Oh, for God's sake...
I didn't know that bojack would become my favorite melodrama watching this first season lol
Also, totally agree with you about Say Anything. The moment at the end was so lonely, it was the first time I felt emotional during this show and caught me by surprise.
Hey hey, you can NOT compare the cutaways in this show to ughhhh family guy. Family guy cutaways have NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PLOT THE R RANDOM GARBAGE HALF THE TIME! HAVE WE NOT ALL SEEN THE FAMILU GUY EPISODE OF SOUTHPARK!!?!?
One of the things that made the ending of season 1 better watching it a second time after watching season 3 is at the end, Bojack is at what looks to be the planetarium. Right before the credits roll, a flock of birds fly away above the dome. I look at that as foreshadowing to Sarah Lynn which little details like that always convince me that this show knows what it's doing.
I think i was just your 24000th sub. And you're right, Season 1 was special. You could see the genius bubbling to the surface.
I think that the first season of BoJack is widely considered to be the worst.
Everything you say is very interesting but I can't get over a fact how handsome you are :D
The little teasers for the future theorys video are put in a few too many times. Please try to limit it to one in video plug and one at the end.
Thanks for the advice but I’ll just make the videos how I’d like to :)
I wonder if "Vincent Adultman" is ALREADY an adult, and only LOOKS young. His name is literal, just like bojack himself and the chicago baseball team being called the "baby humans" instead of the "Cubs"...
I dunno there's a though line/ joke there somewhere im just too dumb to articulate it lol
Damn i forgot about that princess carolyns rival has those pictures now, now I'm scared
watching your season reviews to keep from crying over the season 6 ending again ;-;
It’s only flawed because it has to set up for the characters and etc
And it does not understand who these characters are yet
First watched this show a few weeks after it first started, I loved it right from the start (even the first half of season 1) and I've showed it to so many people, everyone always loves it. I actually didn't generally like season 5 as much on first viewing, but going back and watching it now it's actually also great so I'm not sure what I was thinking back then
I swear Princess Carolyn has a different fur colour in the pilot compared to later on.
Several people I've showed the show to have dropped it in the first few episodes despite my insistence to stick with it. It's such a shame that the show's beginnings aren't really representative of the show as a whole because it really is one of the greats.
downer ending is my favorite s1 episode by far
it raises the question to beg the question means something different
I hated the first 6 eps... but if you stay a little longer you just get hooked to the series. I think they started without really knowing how the series were going to evolve, but they nailed an the end of season 1
Great review 👏👏
I just realized but when Jonny is talking about the telescope episode he censored him saying the f bomb, and in the telescope episode herb says the f bomb, coincidence, I think not
Have u ever reviewed season 3?
"fan favourite Vincent Adultman" ?
You are beautiful
"Downer Ending" is the first darkest episode of the series and I keep telling you: this show was supposed to be mature, but not that mature. Also can you do the breakdown on "Escape from L.A." and "The Showstopper"? Please?!
Haha, I really think you need to rephrase your complaint. Saying "The show is too mature for my taste" makes sense, but what you keep saying is that the show "Was meant to be mature but not THAT mature." This is just a factually inaccurate statement, the show is exactly as mature as the writers intended it to be. Like, how are you going to keep telling the creators that the show isn't what it's supposed to be, when THEY'RE the ones deciding what the show is?
I am doing an Escape from LA breakdown and will do Showstopper eventually too! Though I'm surprised you like those episodes given that they're two of the most mature in the series
@@Johnny2Cellos Thank you, my friend... and be sure check my video on my reaction on "The Showstopper" and let me know if you got the breakdown of both episode, ok? And you're right about saying "The show is too mature for my taste" makes sense, and I should have said that. 😑😐

AMAAAAAZING VIDEOOOO!!!!! can't believe I found this channel!!! super happy
Sorry, you dont suck. My dumb friend commented that while i was on the toilet. Great review though :))
Bojack Hates the Troops is the worst episode imo its like, the WORST trope to follow. Def a skip on rewatches.
Where is review of s3?
Not flawed. You’re just wrong.
Ok Jeremy
@@Johnny2Cellos I mean the "flaws" you pointed out were really just things you didn't like.
Dude, the first person to admit that Season 1 is uneven is a guy name Raphael Bob-Waksberg, he’s talked at length about how they feel like they were imitating other shows in the first half of the season and found their groove in the second half. The show had very poor reviews after the first season, and a lot of those reviewers amended their reviews after actually finishing the season. I am not alone in thinking season 1 has issues.
The episode that made me love the show was the Zoe’s and Zelda’s episode
