I usually find your videos very spot-on, but here, I have to call you out on a few points. This budget can be divided by more than half!
Flights are not really negociable, that's one point.
But about accomodation, if you are like me, a backpacker, you stay in hostels like HI (a four-day stay in NYC cost me $250), or Couchsurfing. Bam, accomodation budget divided by 3.
Foodwise, you can simply do some grocery shopping when you arrive, store it the fridge, and pack lunches and dinners. A five-day stay in Washington DC cost me a whooping $27 worth of food.
Transportation to and from the airport? Ditch the taxi, and use shuttles or buses or subways...
And last, FIFTY dollars of entertainment per day? This one had me almost choke on my coffee...
I think this should not be taken an example of budget for young-ish travelers, but more for people with stable high-ish income. Last year, I took a four-week road-trip in North America, going as such: Toronto-Buffalo-Detroit-NYC-the Grand Canyon (flew this one in and out)-DC-Tampa-Fort Lauderdale. Grand total was barely a thousand bucks.
Maye the title should be a little bit more specific about the target audience.

I think she was just explaining the overall concept of budgeting for a trip. If you use hostels instead of hotels then you can use that for YOUR budget. She was just explaining the basis to get started with calculations. By the way I also agree with you 2185 for 5 days in Seattle ? hahaha insane but the title is how to budget a trip not a trip on a budget :)

I understand where you're coming from. But I found her numbers quite reasonable (although, probably not something I'd dish out money for!) But then again, that goes back to your point, maybe this is more for people who have a higher income and financial support.
I'm all for doing affordable things! But I also wanna have a little more comfort and fun!

thank you thank you thank you... I'm at this phase in my 2015 big vacation planning and, as I don't travel much, I was at a loss as to where to start and HOW to start. There aren't guides or books out there that I can find, just a general passage here and there in various guidebooks - but that's not NEAR enough. This helps TREMENDOUSLY! Thank you Sonia!! You have been, by far, the most helpful travel guide person I've run on to on UA-cam. Big Love to you!!

Wow that's so expensive. I went to Paris for a week which cost me about £400 excluding the flight (since I live in UK). Stayed in a hotel, used transport (Navigo pass) and did all the cool stuff. I guess I saved a bunch of money since all museums I went to were free for me (I'm under 26) but still, way cheaper.

Another nice thing about the Pacific Northwest is that if you want to make it a multi-city trip, there's a train line connecting Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver (actually, it goes all the way down to L.A., but that's a long ride.) Each leg is about $40 and 4-6 hours. Buses are also available; they're somewhat faster and cheaper (Boltbus sometimes does $1 specials), but not as scenic.

I've travelled on ridiculously small budgets which definitely limit things a little but is often my only option as a student saving! On my last trip to europe I saved and spent a total of $14000 Aus, which is obviously not a lot. I got a around it though by having some things around pre booked (like 6 weeks of tours) which covered my transport, accommodation and some meals, then also couch surfed and used a site called Workaway where you can find places to work in exchange for food and board. Also got very good at finding cheap hostels! Although it would have been nice to stay in more explosive places, having limited funds forced me to think outside the box and gave me some memorable experiences... like working at an Italian horse riding stables for 6 weeks - one of the best times of my life! Even if it's stressful and you think you can't save enough, it's always worth it. One final tip - if you're travelling from far away make sure you pay the extra fee that many air lines offer that lets you change your flight date to an earlier one for no charge... that way, if you run out of money you can come home a little earlier :)

  • @lennartverhoeven
    @lennartverhoeven 9 років тому +2

I like your video Sonia! There is one important step missing though: matching the budget that you've calculated to the amount of money actually available for the trip. To me this is an iterative process comparing alternative options to the ones I've found and deciding on which points I am willing to make compromises. Sometimes cheaper isn't a compromise, it can be better than an expensive alternative! In Europe I prefer an apartment in or near the ancient city centre, rented out by a local family over a more expensive five start hotel far away from the city center. It helps me experience the city the way locals see it, it saves me a little on eating out and after a week of eating out I actually like to cook for myself, it saves me on transportation costs to and from the city center, it saves me on transportation time to and from the city center and I don't mind that it isn't as posh as the five star hotel. I don't have to rent a car for the entire trip. Public transport is cheaper and better for city travels. I'll only rent a car for the days I want to see nature reserves and I'll try to cluster those days together to make efficient use of the car.
If the win-win budget cuts don't bring down the budget to an affordable level. It is time to make compromises. I'll try different airports, different airlines, different arrival and departure airports (especially if don't have to do a round trip). Sometimes the surcharge for returning a rental car to another airport, or even in a different country, can be cheaper than the price difference between airplane tickets from different airports. I'll consider if I am willing to stay in cheaper hotels. In some European countries I can cut my food budget by having my main meal at lunch time at half the price of dinner time. Maybe I can spend less time at the main tourist destinations and find a cheaper hotel or apartment off the beaten track and spend some extra time and money on transport. A big one, especially if you travel without kids and are more flexible with travel dates, is to travel at another day, another week or another month. This can cut your budget in half. Finally, if none of these tricks match your trip to your wallet, I'll look for another destination. For example I find Portugal to be 30% cheaper than Spain and they both make very nice holiday destinations. I can even spend half my holiday in Portugal and the other half in Spain and save 15% on my daily expenses.
Another tip: calculate a daily budget. If I stay in an expensive hotel, but I had a very cheap lunch, I know I can buy myself a very nice dinner. If lunch was expensive, or if I cleared out the museum bookstore, I might have to go for a romantic streetlight street, food dinner at a bench on a viewpoint. Watch over the city while the sun goes down and eat some local deep fried specialty. Cheap and awesome.

I live in Seattle & I want to meet you so bad! Anyways, here is some places you can go or do:
-Alki beach West Seattle (known for the Skyline view of Seattle)
    -troll monster in Fremont
    -Pike Place & gum wall
    -Seattle Great Wheel
    -Space needle and Seattle Center
    -Ferries!
-Boeing tours or for free you can go to a view point and watch the planes
-hiking I recommend rattle snake ledge, lake serene, poo poo point and discovery park. My favorite is lake serene because there's a lake at the top of the mountain. What?!
    -Walk around in Seward Park
    -Bellevue Square for shopping
    -do some Thrifting!
-Columbia City has great food! Especially for lunch or dinner.
    -Portage bay for breakfast
You have the bus and light rail to take you around and another trend is to use car2go. I been those a lot lately. Only for Seattle. It's a smart car you rent and it's by minutes. They are everywhere! And brace yourself for the hills!! Lots of hills

Sonia you should do a video on low budget travel to Europe? My husband an I just got back from an 9 day trip to London, Paris, and Venice. Great suggestions. It may seem high but you're better off saving for the higher number and having extra money to splurge on a night out or to put toward your next trip than to stress over not having enough. That stress can ruin a trip. Cost of travel is relative to a persons taste and expectations. I work with a bunch of 20 year olds and they all say to use hostels. Um, I'm 47. So, no. Thank you but no. I want a door. Lol.

Woah, Sonia! That seems sooooo expensive! Are there any ways to save on a trip? Are there any destinations that you can get a lot out of your money?

Thank God for hostels. That's the only reason I'm able to travel on my college student budget :)

    Hi Sonia,
I like to hear you talk about Airbnb. Every tme I have to chose a place to stay I look this site but I never book because I feel afraid to rent a house abroad. How often do you use this site?

hey sonia, do you have any advice on saving up for travelling in a gap year? or in america which is called "a sabbatical year"? (thats what I think it's called)
I live all the way in the UK and having just come out of high school (about to go to university), I find it soo hard to earn and save money! holidays cost sooo much! How much money do you reckon I'd need for travelling for a month in east asia?
