I can remember the old Irn Bru from the 50` and 60`s and it used to catch the back of your throat. It changed when they removed much of the sugar. I don`t like the diet stuff.
The 'regular' Irn Bru is not the original and never has been. The 1901 recipe was used up until 2018 when the company began using artificial sweetner (that's 300+X sweeter than sugar) to bow to sugar tax laws. I strongly suggest not buying the poison sweetner version
Lol a gram of artificial sweetener is sweeter than sugar so they just use less. I much prefer artificial sweeteners to sugar, taste and mouthfeel is superior in my opinion
People are so insane about sweeteners. If you don't like them, that's fine. But labelling them "poisonous" is exaggeration to the point of spreading misinformation. The amount of artificial sweetener you'd need to consume in a day to get poisoned is so damn high that it's comparable to many other natural ingredients.
I came across this when the submarine I worked at was docked in Faslane. At first, I thought it looked like some kind of window cleaner. Wish I could get that here in the states.

It's the "foaming agent" as I saw in the ingredient list that put me off the "1901" stuff..but it's tempting to buy a bottle for "old times sake". Changing the recipe was a cardinal sin in the first place..I drank too much of it as a kid and maybe putting all the brain rotting sweeteners in it is actually the best move..keeps me away from the stuff!.
Well, Barrs are the ones who hold all the recipes so if they've followed the original recipe to the letter I don't see why it wouldn't taste the same :)

Yes anything that has to be approved to go into food is extensively researched. Not saying they are necessarily good for you but your dick won’t fall off. Most artificial sweeteners you consume aren’t digested at all and just pass through your body. Sugar on the other hand is metabolic hell.
*New recipe is horrible - even ice cold.* I am always a little suspicious about the mindset that reducing sugar is _all_ good. Totally understand the health reasons for reducing sugar, but when you replace sugar with chemicals to maintain sweetness, you may well prompt a very different set of problems. There are suggestions that artificial sweeteners are contributing to the the rise in autism, reduce fertility, cause 'gender bending' problems in children, not to mention diabetes too. But there is no confirmed evidence yet just early research. Ordered the original from Amazon . £21 for 6 bottles - worth every penny.
Gary J. Read about the dangers in Aspertame. One of the ingredients is formaldahide and that's used in the embalming process on dead bodies. Why oh why do we need Aspertame is beyond me. Sugar, goes straight through the body through urine and if you don't overdo it, excercise gets rid of the excess calories whereas artificial sweeteners do not. Diet drinks do not help to lose weight, they do the opposite and you gain weight.
@@BijjalyGas Oh I would definitely love to visit especially Scotland. Other than Scandinavia its probably the most pretty scenery of any area on earth in my opinion. Also family originated from there.

It's probably been 2 to 3 years since the previous time when I thought it was still overall good even if a bit suspect, but now all I can say is ..zombie nation, zombie nation, zombie nation.

@@jonathanoxlade4252 It also doesn't make sense that their Energy drinks ( Which doesn't taste nice. I much preferred Irn-bru 32) contains more sugar than a regular can of Irn- Bru. You can get the Energy drink for £1 and yet the regular can which contain less is about 49p or something. The point I am making is that if they could go full sugar for the energy drink? (which is probably included in the sugar tax) Then there no excuse on why they couldn't do it for the regular drink.
They should never have changed the recipe, it tastes fu**ing rancid now. More annoying the fact they still write on the cans etc that it's bru'd to the same original recipe for over 100 years when it clearly aint if they changed the recipe few years ago 🤔 For a company being a bit below the belt with the adverts etc and sticking fingers up to the big wigs they absolutely sh*t them selves when it came to the sugar tax didn't they. Don't understand how they couldn't have just kept the ORIGINAL irn bru but just put the price up to match the sugar tax etc and give consumers the choice wether they wanted to pay for it or not. Coz can guarantee the die hard drinkers would have paid any price. Bring it back ya bunch of fan*ys

The idea that sweetener is poison is really an outdated mindset
The 1901 version takes me back to my Scotland days with my nana and papa is Bellshill, motherwell ❤️

You can. Some supermarkets with an "International Section" sell them. In my area they're sold at Publix.
came back out again the day
I found the 1901 was lightly carbonated compared to the current version which is very carbonated
do they really make it from rusty girders

I agree...'foaming agent' sounds like it might be detergent or something. Although I'm not suggesting it is, Irn Bru lawyers ;-)
In their shandy they use Foaming Agent (Quillaia Extract), that's probably what they are using in this.
Yeah it's a vegetable root extract.

Replacing sugar with sweeteners is not a positive thing. Ultimately people just need to consume sugar in moderation.
