I remember over 6 years ago asking hacksmith if they would ever consider doing or supporting a battle bots team (I was competing in 15lbs NRL at the time). James said they couldn’t because he understood how much of a financial challenge something like this is, even the little 15lbs bots cost multiple thousands of dollars. To see how far him and his team have come is actually incredible and I wish your team all the luck in the future James.

Used to do FIRST Robotics Competition. Watching all this brings back some PTSD level memories of rebuilding a team's full robot between a Wednesday night and Saturday morning. Taught them a lot and learned a lot myself. I was troubleshooting the wiring in my head as you guys were. I was screaming check the battery connector! A lot of focus goes into the design and build of the weapons, but how the electronics are designed and built determine the reliability of the robot.
Wish there were more focus on layout and wiring and discussion on the strategy behind the choices. As seen in this face-off, pinched wires and loose connections can turn a good robot into a glorified paperweight. Planning it all and accounting for the forces it will see while fighting should be just as prominent as the weight distribution of the spinner

The amount of dedication you guys put into building and improving Orbitron is insane- props to everyone involved. I'll be rooting for Orbitron in the next season of BattleBots, and it would be incredible to see these improvements for future fights:
    1. Make sure that both weapons spin up quickly at the start of the fight. In the second fight against Disarray, only one of them spun up at the very start.
    2. Forks on both ends of Orbitron should be implemented when fighting against verts.
    3. An A.I. mode which allows Orbitron to face it's weapon against the opponent when the opponent is circling Orbitron, and a KILL button which allows Orbitron to attack the opponent based on their predicted circular movement.
    4. A.I. mode which allows the driver to input certain points of weakness in the opponent's bot- for example, the rear of the robot, which Orbitron prioritises when KILL mode is activated.

      A note on number 2:
If they can get around their enemy bot properly then playing the ground game shouldn't be as big an issue. I know Witch Doctor commonly uses the maneuverability that comes with a lack of ground game to get around their opponents and Orbitron is designed to move around enemy bots and strike them from weak spots

Its cool to just see the behind the scenes! It really shows that despite how many precautions the bots have, everything that can go wrong probably will go wrong. There are some things that just can't be prevented, but its amazing to see how you fix everything and figure out what needs to get done! It all shows the complexity of the bots more than the fights do. These are machines that took tens or hundreds of hours just to design, and they're so complicated that something is almost guaranteed to go wrong, but it also shows the preparation of the team, who was always prepared to fix whatever issue popped up.

Awesome performance from everyone involved. And seeing behind the scenes- the sheer cost of everything, repairs included- made me want your opponent to stop when they were down. But they kept trying to get one more hit in, even while upside down- so more strikes were needed. And the little bot was dogged and determined but ultimately was sent flying away in tatters. Truly a tense match and I'm glad you got a winners pog!

I like how some of the best battle bots ever were a couple of guys in their garage, and this team of super nerds (complement, not insult)
overcomplicated the heck out of it and have an endless list of problems they fight before even getting in the ring, lol

    • @Appri
      @Appri 10 місяців тому +25

      All modern battlebots are overcomplicated.
      All OLD battlebots are overcomplicated.
There is no way to simplify brushless drive. All of the Orbitron controls and fancy stuff is done on their laptop, not in the bot.
That's simply what you get when you have FOUR motor controllers in one bot with individual controls for each section, not to mention modularity and durability in the question.

Whilst modern heavyweights need tens of thousands to run at a tournament.

You know, I am not smart, but if you are trying to make a cordless lightsaber, you could make the lightsaber more fuel efficient rather than trying to find a fuel which is able to provide the lightsaber's consumption.
Well , you are probably doing that now. This might be useful to you.
