When they released the iPhone 15’s specifically the Pro models and how the A17 pro chip could now play AAA games and the new camera features etc, I don’t understand why the new photographic styles can’t be used on the 15 pro’s, I’m not upgrading a year old phone which for me still runs great plus WILL be getting Apple Intelligence for a feature which personally I think is just a locked software feature for the 16’s.
Wish there was an option to shoot jpegs and raw files at the same time so I could have fun with photo moods yet not compromise capturing in all of the photo data for the purpose of editing in Lightroom or preferred photo editor.
For HEIF photos taken with styles in iPhone 16, the same styles and interface can be found and adjusted in the Apple Photos app for Mac OS. Pretty neat.

Did you test out jpgxl? As a pro photographer myself that is one thing enticing me to upgrade from 13 pro. Raw files are good but too much storage. But I’m hesitant to give up my 3x optical lens for 5x. For portraits 5x is overkill.
if you use HEIF MAX as your raw format, it still possible to apply photo styles. I know HEIF MAX is not the same as RAW, but maybe for now that is the best format it can work on. I guess the changes in maybe there was an update on the HEIF file format that allowed more things into like photo styles.

Is that a bug? It doesn't make any sense.
Only releasing this on iPhone 16 and locking out buyers of the previous years because they don‘t have enough other innovations is absolutely disgusting.
Apple actually adjusted the image processing pipeline to enable this feature, which is also possible thanks to the new Image Signal Processor in the A18. Unlike what you think, it's not *just* software - it's software in conjunction with the hardware.

The hardware pipeline had to be changed as the older SoC’s do tonemapping earlier in the pipeline which makes it a destructive process to apply the tonemapping later. Before you call me an apple fanboy, I have never used a single apple device in my life. Been a lifelong Android user.
At this point it looks like photographic styles is only on the 16 devices. I wasn’t able to use it on any of my 14 Pro photos, or 15 that were airdropped.

And was thinking of getting the 15 pro, because I don't think that the capture button adds too much, but I thought the photographic styles were pretty cool, but I could just edit my photos

Ok, just a theoretical example. Maybe the old iPhones could do this but because they don’t have the new hardware it would take 10+ seconds to change the photo style. Basically making the feature very sluggish and not very usable. Should Apple still allow the old iPhones to do it if the experience sucks? At some point Apple has to make those type of decisions. Otherwise people will say my phone sucks after one/two years etc. It’s so slow! Designing hardware and software is like anything else, you have to make decisions based on constraints.
I need an iPhone 16 pro MINI to replace my iPhone 12 mini! I’m annoyed that Apple didn’t make a pro version of the mini but understand it’s difficult to fit everything in such a small space, however… it doesn’t stop me from dreaming 😂. I bought my wife the iPhone 15 Pro so I can always use that one when needing a better camera or zoom and don’t have my full frame camera with me.
So true! Those mini phones were / are still so cool and an amazing form factor lol. If you watch Davey’s video, he’s always been a fan of the mini phones also. I switched from the Pro Max down to the smaller size and am loving it. The max size, while is has better battery, is tooooo big for me.

Totally agree but I can see more of the general public using this alot more than someone that actually wants to edit. Apple do have some awesome features.

why doesn't anyone say that there are already photo styles, filters and tones on iPhone 15 and earlier? now they have only changed the software and using the pad it is quicker to change the tones, but on other iPhones there are the same settings, only with more menus to access
I will need to try them out but they do seem a bit gimmicky, they look like fancy Instagram filters. If they were that great every Tim Cook UA-camr disciple would be raging about how great these photographic styles are. Like you said to get the best photo out of this phone you will need to shoot ProRaw.

Why would u even want those styles to work with pictures taken with professional equipment when u have much more strong and in dept software options to post process photos / videos ? As for the camera button its much more uncomfortable and inconvenient than screen controls its not even funny. I only use it to just open the camera app not even pressing to shoot. Now as many others are saying, this button would be SICK if it was also doubling as fingerprint reader. I wish it wasnt there as what it is atm. I never felt like i need one and i never imagined to have it and was doing just as fine if not better without it. When i think how Apple mocking samsung for the S pen and now we get this dumb creation that i will use even less than the S pen. Seems like Apple have fixation on buttons , every year new button to do stuff that u can do without it.

I have the 16 Pro and I don't see this feature. Currently running iOS 18.0.1

Can photographic styles now fix weird orange warm skin tone issues in iPhone photos ?
My understanding with photographic styles is that they are trying to fix that exact thing and keep skin tones normal even when shifting other tones.

It appears only in non raw pictures taken on iphone (live photos do get this option too)
Also check your settings in Camera, Formats, and you need to be in “high efficiency” as this option also doesn’t work in “most compatible”.

What camera do you use to shoot your videos?
Mostly Lumix. S5ii and S5iiX, also the S9 for shorts and some simple broll. They are sleeper cameras but powerhouse 😎
There is no reason why photographic styles can’t be given in previous models. It’s not a hardware feature 😅
It uses the extra oomph of the neural engine on the new ones. It is a software feature enabled by the new hardware.

I might suggest the opposite, but honestly for most people, these devices are more capable then most people need.
