    Whisky.com reviews the Johnnie Walker Black Label Highlands Origin. The Johnnie Walker Black Origins series is a special interpretation among the Black Label bottlings. For the four whiskys, only malts from one of the four whisky regions Lowlands, Speyside, Highlands and Islay were used. In this way, the bottlings also capture the character of the respective region. Highlands Origin is created from single malts from the Highlands region, based on whiskys from Clynelish and Teaninich.

    First review of Highlands Origin on YT where I hear about smokiness in taste. Exactly what i feel as well comparing to regular black 12... This is why i trust your reviews...

    So hard for me to grab a blended scotch over a single malt

      I've yet to be disappointed with a Compass Box compared to single malts at that price. A low end Johnnie Walker doesn't get my hopes up though. If the Islay isn't decidedly un-intense then I could see that having a selling point.

      I generally agree but this is a "blended malt" (no grain distillate) so it's potentially interesting to try once, if the price is reasonable.

      @@DJFAmenHeavy it's not necessarily snobbish, Malt Mate :) I agree that blends can be decent and good. I've yet to encounter an "amazing" mainstream blend (I'm sure they exist) and something tells me that the price it commands would offer a plethora of amazing single malts as better alternative. Poor single malts? Again, I would agree, they exist and I've tasted them, i.e. Glenlivet Founder's Reserve. But that mostly lives on the cheap side of the spectrum. I'd never buy something like that (tried it at a friend's house). And I'm no snob - I deliberately buy and taste bottom shelf whiskies and I can sip a cheap 3-yo blend without complaining (not all of them, lol). But when taken in context of prices, I can certainly agree that at black label price point (and up) one may begin considering single malts. Bespoke premium malt blends like Compass Box, etc. are certainly an exception, but they do cost more.

      @@alexk3088 idk, glenlivet 12 is nice one for me (light/balanced fruity (banana), it has cooling note and no bitterness)

      @@1247111 I wasn't talking about 12, mate. Glenlivet 12 was my intro to malts and I still consider it a solid basic malt. And Nadurra is (are) spectacular. I meant specifically the NAS "Founder's Reserve" (blue label). It's often sold with a bottle of tonic or ginger ale and a mixing glass. It's rough, young and boozy.

    Bought a 1 litre bottle in Lanzarote for €35 .Seems to be a lot of caremel in it.....It is quite drinkable but I will not buy again, I will try a better Highland Malt brand. I think that you are being to generous to this blend !!!!!

      DBL BLK has much more Caol Ila so it is much more smoky. This shouldnt be smoky at all I guess there's something in it that Ben picked up. Maybe a saltiness instead. And this will have no grain whisky either so the flavours will be stronger.

    I'm compelled to maybe try these once. 42%? That's almost comical - trying to be above bare bones legal limit while not giving customers too much whisky. Probably also being careful not to undercut the 15yo Green Label (43%). Sigh... well, at least 42% offers 5% more whisky vs. 40%, so thanks, Diageo ;)

      Sorry I didn't understand how does 42% offer 5% more whisky over 40% ?

    • @alexk3088
      @alexk3088 11 місяців тому

      @@nv2929 1 liter of 40% whisky contains 400ml of pure ethanol (by volume). 1 liter of 42% whisky contains 420ml. 20ml is 5% of 400ml - 5% more.

    According to me it's a tamed down version of Clyenlish. Pretty average and unimpressive. Waxiness n marine salty notes of Clyenlish are a big miss
