The answer is simple: whichever one the trout are in the mood for that day. I've had feasts AND famines with all three brand names mentioned. Thirty casts with the Panther, not even a follow. Second cast on a Rapala, BANG. Next week, same spot, complete opposite results.
That green one is amazing.... brook, rainbow and brown trout all seem to love it in my experience! As soon as I seen that on your table I decided to finish watching your video and not to my surprise that was your go to as it is mine!!! I even like the reverse green blade black weighted ones... that color green is killer!
Excellent video ! You are definitely on the right track. If you are interested, I'll share the lures I discovered over the past 40 years of fishing the Pacific Northwest for tout in Lakes and Rivers/Streams. ? #1) 1/8th oz. Black Rooster Tail Spinner with the Silver Blade. "Old School Original" #2) 1/8th oz. Yellow body with Red Dots and Silver Blade Panther Martin Spinner. #3) 1/8th oz. Silver with Red Dots Z-Ray Wobbler. #4) One Inch Jointed Rocky Jr. Balsawood Minnow Plug. #5) Size 8 Black or Olive Wooly Bugger Trout Flys w/a lead split shot up 18" to 24", split shot sized to get it down to the river bottom w/o snagging up, w/a strip pause retrieve. Or a very tiny Marabou Jig in Black, with white eyes. Last but not least, 4lb test with a thin diameter, in clear or slightly green color, and a 4' 9" to a 6.5' Fiberglass rod, Not graphite, and preferably an all cork handle with sliding rings for the ultimate sensitivity, avoiding metal and plastic on the handle at all cost...
Thanks for the share! Sorry I took so long to respond, I'll be doing a lot of fishing this month so I think I'm going to have to go buy all the lures on your list to try them out!
6:27 I find if the Rooster Tails have a slightly bent main shaft, they tend to not work well at slow retrieve speeds. In general really they tend to work best at faster speeds. I would add the Abu Reflex Arctic Spoon to the list.
I also love Panther Martin's for trout. Mainly because I catch a lot and also you can cast upstream and it still spins coming down current. Unlike Rooster Tails. Must have something to do with the Martins blade weight and in-line type blade. Having said that.............size 3 and 5 and sometimes 7 black and silver original floating Rapala's are my go to not just for trout but for near everything. I consistently catch Steelhead trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, perch, walleye, saugeye, northern pike, musky, bluegills, crappie. I have not caught a lot of channel catfish or bullheads but I have caught a few with a rapala. Pretty much stick to nightcrawlers or even long thin slices of steak for the cats. Anyhow, just my 2 cents. If I were dropped off in the wilderness with a fishing pole and had to choose 1 lure it would surely be a 3 or 5 black and silver original floating Rapala. Oops that was 2. Uhm I guess a 3. Wait on 2nd thought a 5. No, no, no a 3. Maybe. Or a 5. lololol
LOL see it's not as easy you might think to choose just 1 lol. I'll definitely have to pick up a black and silver rapala. Thanks for the recommendation!
The willow leaf blade on the Roostertails sinks faster, runs deeper and requires more speed or current to spin. The Panther Martin's through-blade (no clevis) spins quickest and fishes shallow the best - start reeling in slow just as it hits the water. Mepps spinners also work very well and have the best all-around blades that have been copied by many lure makers- try the Black Fury on blue sky days.
It's not so much the spinner, it's putting the spinner in the right place at the right time. Chance plays a big role, then technique. If you want to lower your chance of snagging, clip off the treble hooks and replace them with single Siwash hooks. The Siwash hook should be larger than the treble to maintain the spinner action as close to the original as possible. The other advantage of using a single hook on a spinner...you can bait them to give your spinner a higher chance of a hit.
Panther Martin cost a little more but their worth it. With the offset blade on the shaft you can fish it at lower retrieve speeds....... thanks for sharing
Ive never caught a thing on them. Gold, silver, gold shiner, and silver shiner. To be honest im glad you guys find success, but I get incredibly upset that i have no luck with em. Same with trout magnets.
@@c_b8s4 I have tried mepps and some other brands and I personally find Blue Fox Vibrax the best. They are very durable and made of high quality parts razor sharp triple hook they never cause twisting and tangles in the line and I love the resistance they have in the water when retrieved which makes it easy to control them in terms of speed and depth. They are also heavy for their size compared to other brands that I have used and that helps with the casting range and accuracy. I use them to fish mostly chub in the river. My favourite colour is silver.
No Mepps? Panther Martin used to be my go-to, and I still use them a lot, but for the past couple of years, I've had more overall luck with Mepps. This year, my two trout killers were a #3 Brown Trout Mepps Aglia and a #6 original pattern PM (brass blade, black body with yellow spots). While fishing on a small river in south central Idaho, I caught over 30 trout in about 4 hours on these two lures, mostly on the Mepps. Later in the year, I caught a 2+ lb Tiger Trout in a local Utah reservoir on the Mepps. I started using Mepps a few years ago when I wasn't having much luck with my PMs. So, I pulled out a standard brass Mepps Aglia, which I hadn't used in years, and my luck suddenly changed. So, if you haven't tried Mepps, give them a try. (I am not a Mepps spokeman or representative.)
Panther Martin's and mepps are the way to go, never been able to get a rooster tail to work long enough to catch a fish. That's stream fishing in northern California.
Hey man. Utah fisher here. My GO TO since I was a kid has always been Jakes Spin-a-lures. I use the gold with red spots in sunny weather and the silver with red spots in cloudy. Im gonna have to check out that last one though. Seems worth a try. Good vid....
I make cheap ones at home nothing fancy and the work awesome plus the cool thing is you can use different weights depending on water depth cost to me 75 cents a piece. Those ones your showing are like 6$ each in trout streams snags are expensive,Make your own give it a try
Thanks for sharing .. If you go to SCHEELS now , they have your favorite flo green/ hammered silver on sale for $3.99 each ..I just bought 5 .. Thanks again .. Tight lines
It is very interesting, but, with all due respect, I think this ranking could've easily been upside down. That is, there is no principle difference between most of these spinners, imho. When trout are not super active (which is most of the time), takes are inconsistent and sporadic, so if you keep on changing lures, it may seem that some lures work better than others, when in reality those are all just coincidences. In other words, if you fished the same spinner all the time, the result would probably have been exactly the same, imho. The only difference I can see (disclaimer: I never used neither Panther Martins, nor Rooster Tails, so it's just a guess), is that Rooster Tail will dive faster and will have a smaller spinning radius (less resistance, less control) than the Panther Martins. Plus, I agree that sometimes having some feathers or fibers on the treble may have some kind of effect, but it's hard to tell. That's it. BTW, I think you should've dropped the rather dated Countdown you showed, it's a spinners list anyways. BTW, with that being said, I too have a top spinner (Mepps Aglia TW copper No. 2 or 3, it's what I use in most on my vids ;)), but, to be frank with you, it is probably the matter of psychological attachment or quite irrational overconfidence in a thing, i.e. this spinner is best for me, the fisherman. The peace of mind I get using this spinner is easy to confuse with its effectiveness when catching trout, of which I still have little understanding even after 20+ years of fishing pretty much for trout only ;) Thanks for the list and tight lines!
Im from Maine and when it comes to Brook trout I've had the most luck with the Panther Martin #2 yellow teardrop with red dots I've tried all the top lures and nothing catches me more fish than that lure, for Brown trout a black and white rooster tail
Perfectly said. If you have confidence in what you are fishing with you do not worry about if you are doing things right or wrong. You focus on the fish.
I actually started using Joe's Flies after I recorded this video (guess I should make an update video) and have had some good luck with them. Which ones have been working best for you? I made a short video on the ones that have been working well for me, you can check it out here ua-cam.com/video/E55ZgvOvgaE/v-deo.html
hello nathan- i must tell you that the rooster tails are FABULOUS-however you need some other patterns-the reason the dontspin is the wire in front get bent and needs to be gently straightened- i have fished roosters for 60 years and we also sold them in our tackle store foryears- (mayfly...clown...yellow coach dog-,..flame coach dog-..bumblebee are the outstanding colors however you will find that they are very hard to locate
You got the try the silver vibrax number two gold seems to work best in murky water silver seems to work best in clear and sunny weather Clearwater is great for the silver I'm about to try the black.
Yellow with red spots/silver blade or black with yellow spots/silver blade for panther martins. Brown trout, white, red, or rainbow trout for rooster tails. All get bit every time I use them.
Yes, gold work better in brighter conditions. For me, out West, my go-to's are 1) Rooster Rails, 2) Super Duper's, 3) Blue Fox, 4) Mepps, 5) Rapala's - Original. I'm surprised about Rooster Tails not working in Sierra's. For me, again out west, I have 5 colors/patterns that I use either solely or in combination. Hot Pink, Hot Orange, Silver, Firetiger, and Rainbow Trout. And I don't own any Panther Martin lures.
Just getting into fishing with spinners. Do you use some type of ball bearing swivels to attach the panther martins? And what type of line and weight to you recommend for fishing Sierras?
Best practice is to use a swivel... However I just tie them straight to the line usually. The streams I fish are usually so shallow that the extra weight of the swivel usually leads to more snags. The line does wear out a little faster because of the line twist but I'm willing to deal with that rather than snags and losing lures do to snags. Hope that helps.
I prefer Joes flies and Mepps 2 or 3. I got this Mepps pattern in Portugal I can’t find here in size 3 and it keeps hitting fish. Just plain gold with black dots
Issue: Panther Martin blades stop spinning easily. It's because the wire shaft gets dirty or very slightly corroded. Almost impossible to see, but it increases the friction on the blade or the clevis on a Roostertail. Solution: "Scrape (very lightly) the shaft, with a single edge razor blade. Then clean the shaft with a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol. You will have to repeat the process after fishing the lure a few times. What you are removing is microscopic dirt mixed with the goo from suspended algae. I've tried every inline spinner known to mankind. I've settled on the chrome bladed Mepps Aglia size "00" (1/12 oz) undressed, with the red tubing over the treble shank. The Mepps will still get dirty. I squash the barbs half way down. It really helps with hooksets.
I've honestly never had luck with Mepps (probably wasn't trying the right ones) I'm definitely going to put the No.2 chrome blade on my shopping list. Thanks!
