Tuan Nguyen Yes, it is a war film. But calling it just a war film is undermining what it really is. A typical war film, take SPR for example, focuses on a squad of men who face evil and have to fight hard to overcome it. It's a basic template that every war film follows, except TTRL. Just look at even the newest war films like Fury, American Sniper, and Lone Survivor (the best of the three). They all follow the same basic plot and basically say the same things. 'War is evil and it makes man do evil things.' Yeah, we get it already. TTRL takes this theme and blows it up, examining each particle with its beautiful, poetic narration and absolutely GORGEOUS imagery. TTRL is a war film, yeah. But I don't like to compare it to other war films because they don't gave much in common from a narrative and thematic standpoint. Also, other than SPR's incredible opening 20 minutes, TTRL has the best war scenes in any war movie I've seen. There are no quick cuts, no big heroic moments; the camera glides and tracks the battles, giving an increased sense of immersion. The superb sound design escalates this even further. I really don't have anything negative to say about this film other than the fact that you sure as hell better be wide awake and ready to pay attention and, most of all, THINK! Movies rarely make us think anymore but TTRL has stayed with me since the day I saw it and it somehow creeps into my daily thoughts. It is so relevant in my life and I'm infinitely happy that I saw it.
This inspired song was written in 1990 by Benjamin Tekulu, one of my students at King George VI School in Honiara and was recorded at the SIBC studios in the same year by the KG6 King's Kids. Sony Pictures paid Benjamin a modest fee for using the song in the 1998 movie "The Thin Red Line", although obviously the song was not yet in existence in 1943 when the movie was set.
