He was the best General the Imperial Japanese Army had. His defense of Iwo Jima was nothing short of brilliant. It's a shame he couldn't allow himself to surrender in the end, but that simply wasn't a possibility for a samurai like him. As an American, I have nothing but respect and honor for him.
I was going to say the same thing, but you have said it all! He was the best of the best that the imperial Japanese forces could provide! If our grandfathers had to fight anyone, this is the man that they should have fought!
What Kuribayashi was able to to with his surroundings and 20,000 men was unreal. He was a natural tactician. Had it not been for him, US casualties would have been next to nothing, and the island would have been taken over in a few short days. Much respect to this great warrior.
The irony is that most of these Imperial Japanese officers were educated, trained and welcomed at West Point and Sandhurst and other western military academies before the war.
The greatest military genius ever to live. Even greater than Napoleon. It is sad that the ones who write history are the winners. And the ones who lose, even having fought bravely, are forgotten..
Tadamichi Kuribayashi is perhaps the most underrated commander of the Axis Powers. Not only was he a skilled, pragmatic general who inflicted some of highest casualty rates the United States ever suffered during the war, but he was also a compassionate, rational human being. He evacuated civilians so they wouldn’t get caught in the crossfire, he shared the hardships of his men living in appalling conditions, he visited wounded soldiers in the hospital, he forbade the use of banzai charges (believing them to be futile and a waste), and he openly opposed going to war with the U.S. (believing it to be last nation Japan should fight). It is said that the Japanese government sent Kuribayashi to Iwo Jima, knowing he wouldn’t make it off alive. Kuribayashi himself knew defending Iwo Jima was an inevitable defeat, but he also knew if the U.S. captured it, Japan would be in full range of American bombers. If defending Iwo Jima meant protecting his nation’s civilians from those bombs for even a little while longer, then he would gladly defend that island to his last breath. The Battle of Iwo Jima lasted for over a month and resulted in nearly 28,000 American casualties, and it climaxed with group of Japanese soldiers launching a sneak attack on an American encampment before being wiped out. It is said this group of Japanese soldiers was led by Kuribayashi himself, making him one of last generals to lead from the front and die in the front. The reason his body wasn’t identified in the aftermath is because he wore the uniform of a common soldier, not an officer. Tadamichi Kuribayashi was one of the best men the Axis Powers had to offer during the war and it’s a shame he isn’t widely known like Erwin Rommel. I honestly can’t thank this film enough for giving him the recognition he rightfully deserves. Rest In Peace General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (1891-1945).
He was the bravest Japanese General ever the Japanese may have been my enemies back in the war before I was even thought of but.......I honor the Japanese

If you read the military history books, thank God that every Japanese held island was not defended by such men as Kuribayashi, we would have lost soldiers in droves. It was bad enough at Iwo Jima, one of the most costly battles that the Americans fought. There was great gallantry on both sides, each with their own beliefs. For the Americans 'Uncommon valor was a common virtue', and of Kuribayashi 'our most redoubtable enemy'. Whatever the 'rights and wrongs' of it all, let them all rest in peace
