  • The real story behind the meeting of US and Soviet forces at the Elbe River in Germany on 25 April 1945 - not quite what we have been led to believe!
NOTE: Though I'm British, I use the American pronunciation of 'Lieutenant' when discussing US forces.
Dr. Mark Felton is a well-known British historian, the author of 22 non-fiction books, including bestsellers 'Zero Night' and 'Castle of the Eagles', both currently being developed into movies in Hollywood. In addition to writing, Mark also appears regularly in television documentaries around the world, including on The History Channel, Netflix, National Geographic, Quest, American Heroes Channel and RMC Decouverte. His books have formed the background to several TV and radio documentaries. More information about Mark can be found at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Fe...

The same was with Germany and Japan, but exactly the opposite. I remember one phrase from a war-time US army film, it went something like this: "... a savage nation incapable of innovation" vs one from 1950s: ".. these industrious people .."
I suppose the ultimate goal was to hold back the reds.

John, Stoneage, Let me add insight to what happened to a couple other of the the West and East soldiers, captured specifically on that famous Torgua bridge which Fenton showed.
The 2nd from left (tallest of the 69rs with cigarette in his mouth as he reached to shake hands) was Bernie Kirshbaum, who lived the longest after the war among anyone else in that famous
picture, died at 91 in 2016. I talked with him before his death, and found this soldier of Jewish faith had not such a drive during the war, but also became an architect, sculpture and gained a PhD after the war, living a modest life in NY without seeking any notoriety. Another soldier in that bridge picture (fourth from the right (center picture) was Charles THAU. He was not actually a Ukrainian or Russian, but a 23 year old Jewish Pole who became a partisan after his family was wiped out in 1941. The 58th Ukrainian Guard found him in the wooded forests, and since he spoke German and Russia, took him along as a translator, ending up in the front line at Torgau. Speaking no English, he heard a few of the 69rs (speaking in German near that bridge) stating how great the US was, Charles THAU immigrated to the US a number of years after the war, and owned several auto repair shops in Wisconsin. How do I know this--he was my father and occasionally spoke about the history which brought him to that famous bridge (re-enacted) photo at the Elbe. Little did he know his son would become and USAF colonel, and travel to attend the reunion of Elbe Day at Torgau. (BTW: The photographer that took the famous AP photo, died in Florida). Ironic that all known participants in that bridge photo remained modest about the event, and didn’t seek recognition.

In Russian culture a triple kiss on the cheek is a historical way of greeting, kissing on the lips, even between males, is usually reserved for close intimates or moments of great emotion. It must have been a very emotional moment for these troops. I think it's a little unusual but not completely weird or anything. Leonid Brezhnev was known to give slobbery lip kisses on male lips in some circumstances, this made him the butt of some jokes in Russia. This is known as the Socialist Fraternal Kiss if you want to read more about it.

Been in Torgau in 1988, when the GDR still was there. And in the 90's with an American colleague. In the Torgau castle museum there are interesting ww2 artifacts to see. In 1988 i was as a 15 year old in the GDR on a solo family visit. I asked my uncle if i could go to Torgau, not knowing very good that it was pretty far from Kamenz near Dresden. We went on my cousins MZ motorbike. He was 19 ( and still has that bike). Near Grossenhain we were stopped by a Russian soldier with a black and with striped police stick. Then suddenly a MiG-29 took of and flew low over the road. That because of the landingstrip ending near the road. We had a great day in Torgau. At that time there were real bears in the castle's empty canal. I did make several photographs that day.

    An Interesting report, thanks!
My father met Soviet soldiers at Torgau. I wish I had asked more questions about those times.

Mark’s content helps me so much when I am down in the dumps. It’s kinda silly the idea considering it’s major historical wars and battles, but for me it helps a lot. Take care Everyone!

The USA and USSR had a rocky relationship dating back to 1917 and while they had the Cold War after the fact, it’s so nice seeing the Americans and Soviets getting along. Both sides fought hard and sacrificed to fight the enemy. 1945 was definitely a turning point.

I love that the soldiers greeted each other and celebrated as if they were brothers, but both sides told them to hate each other after WWII.
Edit: Holy shit, I just wanted to make a point that all soldiers from all sides of WWII were Human too, but some shitbags in the comments decided to start WWIII down here.

The soviet was probably thrown in gulag, lots of soldiers who were helped by the west were gulaged or executed to prevent the west from being depicted as friends

My grandfather drove a Sherman during the Second World War and went from France earning a bronze star for choosing not to retreat and hold a French town all the way to Berlin after the soviets took the city I didn’t know this last part until I was looking through some of his old stuff and found a fist full of Soviet coins that he traded with a Soviet soldier
