The book ending to all quiet on the western front was way sadder and realistic. Instead of a climactic battle and tragic death just before the cease fire, the main character is killed by a sniper on a normal boring day in the trenches, so normal that the journal of a commanding officer from the day reads only ' all quiet on the western front'. He died without heroism, tragedy or even recognition.
Kinda reminds me of No Country. Llewelyn was talking to a girl at the pool of a motel, then it cuts to the cop driving Dow the road as he hear gunshots, he sees cartel leave the motel, and he goes to the motel and finds Llewelyn dead.
They kinda turned it from a tragedy of a generation into a tragedy of an individual by doing it as well. Paul's fate is cruel, and his meaningless death served to highlight how insignificant his life was in the eyes of the war council, just as his friends, his neighbors, his entire class. We'd known Paul just as any soldier's friend would, and having him died to such a quiet way so unfairly would've further demonstrated the cruelty of war. Instead now the story will be remembered as just another sad WW1 soldier story.

a lot of people have the wrong idea when it comes to the topic of war. war isn't just a bunch of men fighting for there country, its a bunch of men living through hell for there country. this movie captures that perfectly. it might not be something most ppl want to talk about but its the truth. war is hell.

my great-grandfather was a wealthy citizen of the Russian Empire, but he went to fight in both World War 1 and World War 2. According to the stories of my great-grandfather, it was a living hell; about 250 soldiers died when they captured one trench. he lied as the Germans shouted don’t kill, but he wanted to fight for the sake of protection and not for the sake of pity, he died in 1942 😭😭😭😭
My great great grandpa was forcibly drafted like other Danes in Slesvig and was a Veteran of ww1 from the German Army, he died in the 50s or something like that due to his lungs being totally ruined from gas attacks. According to my grandpa he also had shellshock.
One of the few films about the war that made me cry. In many films, we are shown a romanticized version of the war, and deaths are perceived by us as given, as just numbers, but in fact there is the same person behind the sight of each weapon. Those who died in the war were also people, they also wanted to return home and move on.
"I'm no war hero, I got lucky most people worthy of fighting this country died so doing so and as long as I live they'll never die" Not a quote from the movie but from a person who was in WW2
You see this is what gets me is that little kids and people think that war is a edit and that they will never be hurt or anything but that's the problem this movie shows what war is actually like war isn't something to be wanted its a hell that can't be escaped once you go in that movie gave me chills cup it's what my grandpa wouldn't talk about after ww2 to this day he won't say a word and won't watch war movies because it hits to close to the reality of war
The ideology of war...horrific battles, watching comrades and enemies alike being shot, blown up, stabbed, crushed, drowned, torn apart, shredded by gunfire, watching all of it unfold, knowing full well that the people who caused this war are safe and hidden from the atrocities of war. It becomes easy killing someone when all you have to do is press a button. As the memorial of Oradour-Sur Glane states with one simple word: remember. Alas, the ones who need to remember are the ones who always forget. Never again. Humanity has come so far yet conflict prevails constantly, showing we are no better than animals. Some say war is worse than Hell, as in Hell no one there is innocent.
My brother told me this was a movie that would change my visual image with humanity and I was like "aint no way like psh a movie about war can change me I read so many books about it but never cried-" after I watched the movie i am not joking i stood their for 10 minutes realizing how fucked up we were to send young boys to war who lost so many of their comrades and had to watch that..and no matter what side or country you fought for in the end war was hell, now the next person I hear make a joke about any war I will throw hands
The fact that the solider that was being healed just killed himself showed that the things that he saw can’t be unseen and only one way that he Can forgot it is by killing himself
When I saw this it made me realize how bad ww1 and 2 must have been for both sides. I hope Ww3 won’t happen anytime soon. Rest in piece to all soldiers in ww1 and ww2 :(
