Spoilers if you haven’t seen the movie yet. This is just designed to be a fun comparison between the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and its Marvel Comics' original, The Hands of Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu. It discusses the comics creators like Steve Engleheart and Jim Starlin, and looks at the classic run by Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy. It looks at characters from the film like Katy, Xu Xialing, and Wenwu as well as locations like Ta-Lo and shows which comics any of that is drawn from.

Don’t agree with you on awkwafina being a love interest. It’s one of the first marvel movies to feature characters of opposite sex that are purely friends. I loved that even at the post credits it was clear they were platonic

Even though MARVEL had the rights to Fu Manchu, they didn't just adapt Sax Rohmer's stories, as you would expect; rather, they used his characters as back-story for their original creation, Shang-Chi, and I always got the impression that that comic wasn't actually a part of the 'official' Marvel Comics Universe -- implying there would be no cross-overs with Spider-Man, or the Fantastic Four, or Iron Man, etc.
Shang-Chi, in that he joined MI6 to work for Sir Denis Nayland-Smith along with Blackjack Tarr and Clive Reston, was having adventures around the globe, and thus should not be crossing paths with all the superheroes in New York City and wherever else the standard Marvel heroes fought their villains.
Another great thing about MOKF was that Clive Reston was hinted at being the son of James Bond, with Gulacy's art making him look like a young Sean Connery but with a different hairstyle. And Reston was also hinted at being related to Sherlock Holmes -- which would also make James Bond related to the famous Victorian era detective.
It's too bad the MCU version of Shang-Chi has ditched all that. I would've loved to see a MOKF movie done in a mash-up style of Bond + Bruce Lee -- preferably directed by Quentin Tarantino, as MOKF was his favorite comic book. Alas...!

that was great. My older brother used to buy all the comics, or as many as he could, more difficult in Scotland of the 70s than I imagine in the US. No comic stores back then but there was a wee shop in our town called The Yankee Mag Store, it was hidden, some way off the main shopping area so you had to really look for it, but it stocked US superhero comics as best it could, as well as selling other newsagent type things like candy, newspapers and tobacco. My brother did buy Master Of Kung-Fu but I was less interested in that and more into the Avengers and the FF at the time. But I still read the kung-fu comics and I loved the tie-in with Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu cos I'd seen the films and thought they were great!

I was barely a teenager when the Moench/Gulacy run of this comic was out, and it was incredible. The other artists just DID NOT GET how Shang-Chi was supposed to look. Paul Gulacy got it. His images looked like a Bruce Lee-meets-James Bond movie.

Just came back from a morning show. Pretty good movie - the action was very good (with 2 excellent set-pieces in the first third), and it was visually much better than the usual Marvel fare. My main problem with it was the old Marvel habit of needlessly upping the stakes to world-threatening. I think they could have done much better with a smaller-scaled story, maybe closer to the Monech-Gulaci run (still one of my favorite comics of all time). That way they could have also kept more of a focus on Katy and his sister, both of whom had great potential. Also: Leung and Yeoh rule!!

Good video. Couple of things to note though. Firstly, in _Special Marvel Edition 15,_ Shang-Chi said his mother was American, not English (the woman _previously thought_ to be his mother, that is, because a recent retcon revealed that this woman wasn't his real mother after all). Secondly, while the original Razor-Fist (William Young) had blades on both arms from his debut appearance, the current Razor-Fist (Douglas Scott) in the comics initially only had a blade on his left arm when he was first introduced in _Master of Kung Fu 105._ His right hand and forearm were later replaced with a blade, giving him a matching pair like the original Razor-Fist.

Because Asians don't have yellow or orange skin. Often there's no coloring difference at all between Asians and Caucasians, or Asians have slightly paler skin. It's a caricature therefore because it exaggerates this minute difference to emphasize a contrast between Asian and Caucasian characters, rather than promote empathy. Most readers probably know that the character would not be orange in real life, yet this is how they're made to see him.

Having lived thru the time, I can easily say exploitation. But the reality is, Marvel was capitalizing on current movements of the time. As Comic Tropes pointed out. This can be debated for a long time.

    • @davidbjacobs3598
      @davidbjacobs3598 3 роки тому +1

Well "Exploitation" is kinda a genre, and I think these comics were very much intended to tie into that. This doesn't necessarily mean that they recognized it as problematic or meant anything ill by design - the fact remains that these comics highlighted non-white characters as heroic leads to be emulated. They also exploited stereotypes.
Exploitation can also refer to violence in many instances. Like "Last House on the Left" is arguably an exploitation film. Generally exploitation films have minimal budget and appeal to baser concepts, often (though not always) with little substance beneath them. Something like Blood Orgy of the She-Devils (which is a real movie).

Tigra, Hellcat and Valkyrie with the women's movement.

In the comics, Leiko had a relationship with Clive Reston prior to meeting Shang Chi. She then has an ongoing, on again - off again relationship with Shang Chi from their firsts meeting until the end of the series. She once slept with Reston while with Shang Chi, for which he famously punched Reston off a bar stool. The original comics from the 70s were actually really good, but the quality of the stories fell off from around issue 90 onwards. They basically ran out of ideas.

Looking back at the original comics they really suffer from how little the artists know about martial arts, fighting and fight choreography.
A modern reader would expect a higher level of bullshido. I mean, the cinematic choreography has come such a long way since Bruce Lees trailblazing work. With recent work like Jason Bourne, Ip Man, Ong Bak, John Wick, netflix Daredevil and some Captain America fight scenes, an audience has just come to expect so much more, with or without super powers. And we have youtube and mma, so some knowledge about real amateur as well as highly skilled fighting is also at anyones finger tips.
I do think the Shang Chi movie pulls this off pretty well. (Or go look at the fight choreography in Arcane for an animated example).
Not following the modern comics, I wonder if present day work is as updated?

With the plethora of Hong Kong action films and Kung Fu cinema I grew up watching, anyone with the same experience would say there’s no way we can give this film any higher than a mid level score.
