  • Denholm and the crew has done a great job of helping me get my point across but I would like to add just a little bit more. If you are interested in the future of clowning then check out my youtube site ( • New Circus in the UK ) for films about the new circus and community circus movement in the UK in '90's (which where I come from - in particular the work of Reg Bolton. Find out more about Reg here (regbolton.org/why-circus-works-reg-bolton) where you can download a pdf of his doctoral thesis or contact me at peanutfrsa@aol.com :) also there is a longer unedited version of the interview that produced the movie here vimeo.com/127053923 with lots more information and questions! :)

    Whatever happened to the auguste ? Clowns these days are neither auguste or whiteface, but a hybrid that combines the worst of both.They don`t bother with slop, ginger wigs, loud suits, slapstick and sometimes don`t even bother with red noses. I can understand up to a point, why travelling shows won`t do slop (because of limited drying facilities for costumes), but it didn`t bother the old school of clowns. They should remember though, that they are not in the circus for their own convenience, but for the audience who have paid good money to see them.
    The old British school of clowning with notables such as Coco and Charlie Carioli, have never been replaced by people of similar skillls and never will be, because hilarious clowning that made you want to empty you bladder on the spot, has gone for ever. Even clowns in fixed circuses with clowns who have worked there for years, are jaded and stale and have been for years.
    If modern clowns want to be admired by the old fogeys, they would do well to study the international greats such as Grock. Videos exist on UA-cam and I would recommend that modern clowns and the public, watch a master of the craft. He was about the only hybrid who ever had the skill to get laughs without being an auguste.

      Thanks for your considered and thoughtful comments MrH. I believe we now all LIVE in the Circus... consequently we are haunted by the innocence and pure joy of those performers and their performances...but we have yet to acknowledge their wonderful gift to us.

    To think a meme brought me here. It's really quite beautiful how a clown can convey human emotion without words. It's poetic, almost some what spiritual. They're as old as society itself.

      I was hired to do a funeral gig. Not as a clown really, but as a circus variety performer/ physical comedian. Usually I have to bid on gigs with other performers but no one wanted that gig haha. For the kids there, it was a difficult/confusing moment, and I was there to have them take a break of that confusing energy, and watch some idiot balance 12 boxes on his chin.

    Ever since I was 6 or 5 years old I’ve had a huge addiction of clowns,the more clowns I’ve spotted in a movie,game,cartoon,the stronger the addiction gets,ever since the IT movie came out clowns were being misunderstood because of the movie,people thought of them as harmful and dangerous people but really they’re just humans trying to put people in a great mood,not saying that the movie ruined clowns,not at all,it’s just that it changed peoples perspectives on clowns,I don’t really want to become one myself because obviously I don’t have the funny in me but I’d at least like to dress up as them,or at least clowncore I believe

      I've always loved clowns! I decorated my room in clowns and circus decor as a teen. I've never been scared of them, but then again, I don't watch horror movies. 😅 Check out Puddles Pity Party, he's a pierrot clown (the melancholy, sad kind) and he sings songs, drinks coffee and gives hugs! 🤣 Anyone can be a clown with an interesting outfit, face paint and some little entertaining tricks. Miming helps make things fun, too. 🤡💕👍🏻

    My grandmother took me to Moscow circus visiting Sydney in the 80's, she bought me a private session ticket to see Oleg Popov and then i ended up working in a marionette workshop in the Rocks Sydney...reserching juggalos brought me here.. life is a circle - we are in or out of the ring as oftrn as the circus comes to town.

    • @roberttemple2521
      @roberttemple2521 5 місяців тому

      Popov was the real deal, not the typical b-day party clown that many are rightly scared of. Popov wrote such briliiant sketches that often involve juggling. HIs slackwire work was wonderful, it his his and his alone. I have worked in the business, I worked next to some greats and some not so greats. Amerikan circus' middle name nowadays is mediocrity.

    Deep Video. Taking my Children to a Circus in the 90s with the associated stigma & Protests about Animal use was a brave act. It wasn't until I went to visit Cirque du Soleil in years after that I really saw the almost highbrow Art of Circus & Clowning. I felt I was Transported into a childlike state, were I could safely explore my Humanity through the stories that the Clowns & Artists unfold before us.

    I love the idea of the circus, and clowns. I would love to be a part of a circus one day, ignoring the judgement that others throw at me for wanting to be in one. I have always been interested in both since I was little, it probably started around the age of 6 or 7? I just love it.

      I think people are losing their fear of clowns... the shock value is wearing off. I've been watching a guy named Puddles Pity Party, and people are just crazy about him. He's a sad pierrot style clown who mimes or uses a robotic voice to talk (while he acts out what is said) and he sings... and gives hugs. A lot of people are finding him comforting so who knows, maybe clowns will make a huge comeback! I, for one, would be thrilled to see that happen, because I've always loved clowns! 💖🤡

    George Carl was the best clown ever. He was just funny, born that way. Along with George Carl, I really appreciate gifted clown troupes such as the Rastellis. Russia has produced many of the greatest clowns. Balloon animals, the so-called requisite red nose, "BOZO" , that isn't what clowns are about, that's nothing. Clowning has very little to do with makeup. When I hear reference to clown makeup as some sort of "mask", I groan. Ringling had a "clone college" that helped to lower the art of clowning.

      He didn't show any real clowning in the film, just scarey clowns. He featured only, I think, amerikan clowns. Amerikan clowning has typically been relegated to "space fillers, time killers" within a show's running order. They often are not funny. Clyde Beatty - Cole Bros. Circus featured the aforementioned time killer clowns for many years, mediocrity at its worst.

      Ha! You must be referring to RBBB. Feld's daughter has recently made a bold attempt to bring the show back. What I have seen of RBBB 2023 is really pitiful, not "circus", not even close. In my youth, I saw RBBB in 1964 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. I loved the sideshow in the Garden's basement, the part I remember most. Decades later, I saw RBBB again at Madison Sq. Garden and in Boston. By then, the Felds had turned the show into something that resembled Las Vegas glitz with a few circus acts sprinkled in. It was more "spec" than art. I think the only "real" [one-ringer] circuses left in the world are in Europe and Russia. Cirque du Soleil is theatre featuring circus acts, in a class by itself.
