A building site in the village of Winterboume Gunner, near Salisbury, stands abandoned after previous developments on the surrounding land unearthed evidence of a Saxon burial ground. After working their way through the maze of graves the team discover what seems to be a whole new layer of history in the town.
Time Team is a British TV series following specialists who dig deep to uncover as much as they can about Britain's archaeology and history.

It is a bit unfair that the property owner is normally expected to fund the research, (into the past) that the public benefits from. If someone doesn't have the funds, the research doesn't get done, and they are denied the right to make their home on their own land. This means that only wealthy people are allowed to make their own home. Is this a fair and just system for all? No, its not. Kudos to Time team for helping out and for revealing the mysteries from the past.
In many cases and in many countries the landowner doesn't even own the mineral rights found on the property.

Yeah totally unfair if it actually makes him go bankrupt. Imagine the personal stress that causes, telltale sign he wasn’t visible during the dig either... probably lost all interest in it a long time ago. All round a sad thing, it should be a community effort to come up with funds for a site that is so important.

No wonder those people have the record in school shootings, criminals in prisons, no healthcare and so on... Get your head out of your ass, your idea of the left seems to be some take on communism (which is by the way the best ideology there ever was, however it is also impossible to realize), there are many countries with a left-leaning government, or left-leaning society that has a living standard way above what can be found in for example the US.
I put on time team for the little one (better then cartoons and she loves it) while I talk to my mum. She stops mid sentence and asks, “Is that time team?” According to my mum she was watching this episode while in the early parts of labor with my brother. So this episode is 25 years old. He was born in January 15, 1995. And I was able to look it up, sure enough the episode was released January 15, 1995. She was able to recognize the episode over the phone! My life has lead me across the ocean now, but my kiddo can enjoy the shows that I watched as a child, and apparently also in utero. Thank you for posting the episodes on UA-cam.
This program has always been a favorite, glad it's still seeing life here on UA-cam.
I'm all for the preservation of history and historical sites but as far as I'm concerned, if the council wants the site excavated, they or the government should pay for it or allow the site owner to sell it to someone who is prepared to pay. Once again, the owners are going broke because of the council's rules and regulations
Christy Downs the owner shouldn’t have to pay for this stuff, it’s the government that is imposing this on the land owner. Fine, if the government wants to do the dig, let them do the dig, they pay for it, then put the land back to the way it was before the dig and the landowner can move on with their life.
I don't know about UK regulations, but a lawsuit against the government could well be the case, here. Especially because the representative told about graves discovered in the 20's and 50's in the neighbour plots. Sounds like a trap, the government has information about a graveyard buried there and it's just waiting someone to buy the plot to transfer responsibility of digging it. Bad for history and bad for relations with people.

Indeed. I agree that the discovery and preservation of history is important, but not at the expense of ruining living peoples' entire lives. Priorities need to be re-evaluated, or the government needs to allow the land owner to sell the property to someone with the desire and funds to excavate.

That poor developer. History should be saved if possible. The counsil is underhanded shafting an individual person with the whole of the bill so they can dig at his expense, pretty sure they have more money than he does. If the government(local or otherwise) wants history preserved they should foot the bill. Or at least let the poor guy sell it to someone who can afford to pay for the process. They should not have allowed him to develop the site at all if they were gonna be this persnickety. Local government for you, screw over the little guy.

I can’t over the fact that, seeing them together, Mick is only 4 years older than Phil and the same age as Tony. People really age differently.
The archaeologist who advised that clause be slapped in the owners contract, should be a bit apologetic. So, don’t build on the land until you buy an excavation, don’t sell the land but just let the land sit as a dump. Very nice. Typical local government official. We make the rules but hey, your problem, buyer, not mine. They should not have allowed her to be on TV or humiliated her more. History is great but it’s always the little guy who pays for it. Does the flipping royal family have to live by rules like this too or just if some archaeologist decides they are a contracts advisor?

On the brooch @ 43:13 you can actually see an additional faint ring of concentric dots around the central point which isn't carried over into the 3D render. I personally think and love the idea that there are parallels between the brooch design and the possible symbolism / reverence towards barrows and burials. It almost looks like a map of the burial site from above!

I don't understand all of the ways this poor landowner was being billed, but has the government changed that insane rule that charges someone for the excavation when ruins are found on their property? That law is perfectly crafted not only to inhibit real estate transactions, but to convince people not to report historical finds, which is a loss to us all. Horribly unfair to make individuals foot the bill for collective societal knowledge in a land where, at some depth or other, almost every place is an archeological site. If the queen/monarch is technically the ultimate 'owner' of the land, why doesn't the Crown put aside funds for this? Did this program help make any improvements in this situation?
These are complex questions which I am not qualified to answer, but this might help: I have heard that the law has changed, so perhaps land developers are going back to bulldozing graveyards into skiffs. I agree of course there should be a better balance of who is monetarily responsible.
Bizarrely, it was Thatcher that deemed land owners be billed for archaeology!
You can see at the end, that this did work out more or less for the land owner. TTeam then at least incidentally helped in that. After the credit crunch, TTeam was more or less the leading force in archaeological investigation. Please investigate the internets for more info!

I think billing the Crown is perfect. The Monarchy has been around for longer than any individual landowner. The Crown should pay for the preservation of British heritage for sure.

at the end... that Town Council person is doing exactly what I was thinking at the beginning... he's got to excavate the ENTIRE SITE now that graves have been found... all for a few bones, a few pots, and a couple of beads... and he's going to be out 3 times as much...

@@philaypeephilippotter6532 we have similar situations here in America, where ancient Native American finds on your property can halt development. As a result, the unspoken rule is if you find NA pottery, arrow heads, etc *you keep that shit secret* lest your land effectively be stolen from you. This leads to lots of history being lost.

it’s to prevent the destruction of historical places because of greedy developers. he’s bankrupt because he overpaid for his property in the hopes of building houses but couldn’t be bothered to look into the history of the site first to see if there were potential issues.
@@bostonrailfan2427 Houses? You blind? They showed you an overhead of the property. You could maybe build a townhouse (2-family residense) max. I think the "developer" is a dude making a house for his family in a lot he got "cheap" because it was an overgrown eyesore full of decrepit cars and other junk. At least that's why he thought it was cheap.

Does anyone know how this all turned out in the end? Is there a house (with services) there now? It's been 20+ years. Maybe a museum purchased the finds/urns so the landowner could recoup part of his losses?
I looked through the comments before posting. Please note I'M NOT HERE FOR AN ARGUMENT. Just curious if this was a "happily ever after" or a "this ends the tragic story" situation.
Judging by that councilwoman's body language and hedged responses to Tony's questions, I wonder if the landowner's "phew" at the end of the episode was premature.
Owner lost it all including marriage, is doing better now with a new family and job.
The new owners built on a smaller space and their problems now.😊

Why wasn't the landowner told about the likely probability of ancient burials being there BEFORE he purchased the land? And why didn't the local council have a special fund put aside specifically for this purpose? Especially since they knew; for quite some time about the burials.
I do hope that everything worked out for the landowner in the end.
That's the part I can't figure out. You can't put conditions on land after it's been purchased, ffs. That's just patently unfair. This is why UK property laws are just terrible.
I saw an update about this episode. Don't remember the details but things didn't go that well for the guy. I think he lost his property and his marriage ended.

Very Interesting stories and perspectives what took place between the buyer and seller. I believe every one knew of the posible burals and bought the land anyway. But I feel bad for the guy but I think things are just not adding up right and who knew what, before the purchase and I think it is important to ask just how he knew that the land was avalable to buy and why is a interesting question. So more complicated than a 3 day dig anyway.

Crack team impressed with their precision and skillful techniques in finding and removing bones. For the average person the round head of a skull could easily resemble the head of a stone.
The woman from the local government didn’t care if the man was going broke, but spoke the usual platitudes and that the local government can’t afford it.

Classic example of our national sclerosis. These impasses are destroying the life force of the country. We have evolved unlimited number of ways of stopping economic activity and very few mechanisms for increasing it. Frankly it takes an act of courage for the state to allow any development to take place at all as it is bound to upset somebody. This is why English towns are rather small, grim, identical and depressingly dull to live in. We end up creating a museum of a past nation rather than a new one. In this case there is no pressing need for archeological inquiry so one might put a concrete pad over the whole damn space to protect the past and build above it.

Ill never know why historical places like this never get used as parks or just as small museums. They literally just get lost in history and even when their found they end being built over
Shouldn't the Bureau of Antiquities provide for funds to solve these issues? the landholder cannot fathomably be responsible for anything that was buried in their plot 4000 years ago, and if they ARE, then FINDERS KEEPERS for any valuable artifacts which are found. Oh, what's that? The Crown want those too, and to have the landholder do the work? F'ing typical.

Bloody ridiculous that a Council can bankrupt this man because there may a few old bones on his land. They cry they have no funds to pay for it but you can be damn sure the entire time they've prevented him from building on his land they've been collecting property taxes from him. Typical narrow minded petty bureaucrats. I'd have said to hell with them and gone in there at night with a front end loader and demolished everything.
That is one thing to see this. I had a neighbor who, from the fear of the local government, has destroyed a whole archeological site on his land. In my country, archeological excavations are done for free but the guy did not want them to slow down his agenda. As a result, we will never know what was there. And yes, the whole community was really pissed off. So yes, go to hell with your egocentric approach.
2022 I was telling my husband about all the things he is buried with, he shrugged his shoulders. I was like no, a paper, paper, like a news paper, paper. We are both 49 so it's not like we don't understand what it is, but it shows how language is changing. If someone told me they were reading the paper, I would assume they were reading on line.

I don't remember Carenza talking this much in later episodes. I also think she earned more respect from the others as the series progressed.
Emptor Caveat is still the rule of law in most cases. When purchasing a property, the buyer has the responsibility to research the title for easements and particulars in the local land laws. Even HOA's in the USA have crazy rules that govern the property that are part of the deed and cannot be removed. That being said if the prior landowner withheld information than he may have had a legal case to sue for the funds needed. Too bad Go Fund Me wasn't around then.

I agree with many of the comments here….this situation was such a horror show for that developer…once again the system that is set up…rewards wrong over right…who in their right mind would declare finds when their livelihood depends on rather covering it up…and all those extra costs…when it rains it pours….only for the middle class that is…

Political corruption and government bullying knows no bounds. The Brits are wonderful people. I had the priveledge of "sharing" part of the Kuwait desert with British infantry - a fine bunch of guys. Too bad their government like ours in the US isn't a reflection of the fine people who live under their bufoonery.
I only know Tony as an older guy with grey hair. He looks like a 40 year old Harry Potter in these older episodes! Rofl

I feel bad for the landowners, but also on the other hand... he KNEW about the graves on this site BEFORE he bought the land... and its an EXTREMELY important site for all of history. Its a graveyard, for thousands of years, I'm not sure what the hell else he expected. PLUS he woulda been cursed for centuries with a haunted ass house!
How do you know he knew in advance? He said that construction next door revealed gravesites there, at which point he was slapped with the restriction and bills.
@@dirtypure2023 The restrictions were there before he bought it. There is a map of the graves under the houses nearby and they have been there for years. I have no doubt he did not read the paperwork regarding the restrictions, or misinterpreted or whatever the cost of the dig would be. He probably listened to the realtor and not doing research before he paid for it. I mean if the land had been vacant that long, and the neighbors knew about the graves under thier houses, I would certainly think twice about buying it unless I researched it.
exactly. he knew what was going on and what was required and still bought the land. it’s his fault for not budgeting for surveys as is required, it’s his fault that he lost money on delays because his attempts to get around the requirements was stopped.

You could always download a free adblocker from your app store to get rid of ads. I Use Adblock Plus and haven't seen a UA-cam ad in years. I've heard you can also advance through to the end of the program and then restart it to get rid of ads.
I didn't get any. Some time ago, I went into my ad preferences and unchecked every single box. It took a fair amount of time and was deeply satisfying. Now I may get one or two at the very beginning and I hit Skip Ads as soon as it's possible. I also go into the ads that show up between suggestions on my feed and say Hide Ad, and mark it either Irrelevant or Repetitive.
Here's a tip for you. Start the clip and then drag the timeline to the end. Then just replay the clip and all commercials will get removed.

Bit of a weird episode this. I was hoping for some interesting finds, but at the same time I didn't want too many, just so that poor man could get out of the responsibility of paying for an expensive archaeological survey. Seems like a decent result for everyone in the end.
