It is a sad movie but it is really good, but I would recommend any one who hasn't seen it that they have a box of tissues sitting next them I cried so many times watching it but Denzel Washington did a wonderful job in that movie he should have won a Oscar, they also had another white soldier that lead black troops into battle his name is Isaac Hart he just got a proper burial it's so sad that it took them 110 years later to give him a proper burial but he deserved it I believe Isaac hart lead the second infantry
And another great video guys! FWIW, I am a Mass native and will check this place out on my next visit back in a few months. And also the 54th Infantry is memorialized in a big bronze relief near the Mass State capitol Building. Borders Boston Common. And "Fighting Joe" Hooker has his own statue (and on a Horse!) right in front of the Mass state capitol building (Kris's favorite Union General :)). Again... THANKS!
Thank you so much for this! Both my kids live in Boston, and while I've been to the 54th monument in the Boston Common,, I didn't know about this museum. Next visit we'll try to get there. I do love "Glory", and I'm in tears every time at the end. The thought that these men were willing to fight and die for the country that enslaved them is powerful and moving.
“Ohhhh my looord loooord looord lord…”Another Massachusetts Native here living in Boston checking into the comment section lol. Man I’ve passed by the outside of the Historical preservation building before but have yet to stop inside and I don’t know why. I guess in my defense Massachusetts has so many historical sites to name a few BB59, Constitution, Bunker Hill, Plimoth Patuxet and the Mayflower, hard to hit them all, but now I will see to it to check out the Preservation museum. Cool to learn it is the oldest one in the country. As a kid I grew up in New Bedford which is where Frederick Douglas found refugee for some time. There is even an elementary school William H. Carney in NB dedicated to the proud MoH recipient from the 54th highlighted in the video. Two more interesting facts about New Bedford is there is a Fort called Fort Taber that was designed by Robert E. Lee himself! Construction of it began in the 1850s but was halted by the onset of the war. It wasn’t finished till the 1870s and only had two levels to it rather than the three originally planned. There is a military museum at the fort grounds now, and though weathered the fort still stands. Last fact about NB by 1820 it became the richest city in the world as New Bedford whale oil was so lucrative. NB is nicknamed the whaling city and the city that lit the world, annnd guess what there’s a museum in the downtown historic district called the Whaling Musem. They have a I don’t know the actual scale but I know for a fact it’s not 1:1 but it’s pretty dang close to it of whaling vessel ‘Morgan’(I got to visit the actual Charles W Morgan in Mystic Seaport CT, though it was originally built(1841)owned and operated out of NB.) that the visitors can walk around the decks of. So see there are just tooo many museums in this state but hey that is not such a bad thing for us history nerds. Really neat informative video as always from the trust thank you for sharing!
I know what you mean. I grew up in South Carolina and Virginia as a Navy brat with a history buff father. Our family's idea of an outing or short vacation was visits to places like Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Monticello, Mt. Vernon, etc. As an adult, I did a two week Navy reserve rotation in Boston - I was in hog heaven when I could get time to try to visit all the sites there.
This is insanely coincidental, i just watched Glory for probably the 20th time and happened upon this video about the 54th. To hear that the drummer boy for the 54th came from Elmira NY, a place I have lived most my life, it just blew my mind.
Carney was from Norfolk, Va. Many veteran's didn't get their MOH till long after the war. Chaplain Whitehead of the 15th Indiana didn't receive his till 1896.
Ouch, some of the animated videos, I can show my students and they love it. When y'all have people just talking, they lose interest in less than 30 sec. I know artifacts are hard to animate but....
There are over 100 animated videos for your students to enjoy. We have a wide audience and our artifact videos are some of the most popular on our channel.
"Glory" is a stirring presentation of the 54th Ma. regiment. Unfortunately it does convey some misrepresentations of the facts. Unlike characters from the movie the recruits were not escaped field hands from the south. As Frederick Douglas said they were the cream of black men from the union. Educated, professional and successful businessmen and workers. They were chosen as symbols for other black men to see and exemplify.
SAVE OUR BATTLEFIELDS AMERICA 🇺🇸
Glory is by far my favorite movie. Thanks for sharing.

Two dozen of the 54th Mass soldiers are buried in Chambersburg PA and Mercersburg PA. I'm in awe of their bravery for our country 🇺🇲

Good to see the sword has been restored
Wonderful video. It’s great to see Kris White from behind the camera (although he always does a great job). Thank you.
"Come on 54th!"
Pity there is not a lot or new about the 54th Massachusetts like Documentaries, Thanks for that video

I’m related to colonel Robert Gould Shaw and I’m proud to be.

He was a trash racist... that's your people...
Impressive content. 😘

Sergeant Carney became a letter carrier in the town of New Bedford, Massachusetts after the war. Ironically his MOH was mailed to him.
How was the sword recovered and returned to Massachusetts ? I there a story behind that?
My home state Massachusetts im a native of lowell Massachusetts 💙
What was that 1st reenactment clip?
One word Chivalry
Wouldn't the term be "Colonelcy" not Colonelship? Like Captaincy. Not Generalship.

It’s not a sword. It’s a saber. 😂
What is shameful is how Massachusetts who once was a home to freedom of blacks is now one of the most RACIST PLACES IN AMERICA,,
