you missed an important fact about Tostig and his heritage in english culture. He's the origin of a famous expression that every english speaker uses all the time , and the sadest thing is that he never knew how much consequential he had to be till novadays.... "TOASTED" !!!
History has treated me harshly. I am unfairly remembered as the troublesome brother. Nothing I did was ever good enough for anyone. People looked favourably at my brother Harold! But looked down on me. And professing to be wise, Harold become a fool.
That's not entirely true, you are Queen Edith's favourite brother! And you're not even the most troublesome, that award must surely go to your other older brother, Swegn. That said, you maybe should have treated your people a bit better... and invading your own country to try and dethrone your brother certainly doesn't help your case.
These videos are genuinely getting me through my history GCSE, keep going !! And I think I’m doing the same topics: crime and punishment, nazi Germany , Anglo Saxons and native Americans
My plan is to eventually do a vid on every type of question, but I can bump that one up the list of question types for you! I may do the 12 mark explain question first though, as the 16 mark one is basically the 12 mark one but with a conclusion. :)
THANK YOU!!!!! I just finished my 1 hour long history exam and it was based on Anglo Saxons, I watched your video in preparation for the exam 30 minutes before I took the exam One of the 3 questions on the exam was about The rising of earl tostig Thank you so much it’s because of this video it’s because of you I knew what to write in that question thank you so much
I didn’t revise for my exam but i watched this video on the bus on the way to school. the 12 mark question was on this exact topic. i would’ve known nothing without this video thanks a lot 🙏
Unfortunately not. It will do eventually, but currently it only covers a tiny bit of the course. I'll be doing a livestream on Wednesday evening, however, where I cover the whole of the Edexcel course for Anglo-Saxon and Norman England :)
Godwin is actually not a surname. Most people in Saxon England only had one name so Earl Godwin's full name is just Godwin. However, he married a Dane and used the Danish naming tradition to name his children, which was to have a surname that indicates who the father is 'Godwin son', hence his children all have surnames but he is just 'Godwin'. Hope that helps! :)
@@Alonglongtimeago Heyy, revising this unit and just noticed that there was a daughter Edith who married King Edward. Is her full name Edith Godwindaughter?
Thanks :) My plan is to eventually go on to do videos on those topics, however, I don't have the textbooks for them (which I use to write my scripts), as I didn't do them at GCSE, so that may be a while away.
I don't think Tostig found it hard to understand the Northumbrians as he was Anglo/Danish through his mother. It was probably because he treated them harshly.
?? being Anglo/Danish is different to being raised in Northumbrian culture - as with everything in history, it's a combination of factors, how much responsibility you place with each factor is up for debate though
@@Alonglongtimeago l think it was probably the fact that they wanted to chose their own Earl. The north turned out to be totally traitorous to the South in the end, by not supporting Harold's cause after he had defended them at Stamford Bridge. The fact that they thought they could deal with William backfired and they eventually got their just rewards.
I hate to break it to you but 'Tosty' is the correct pronunciation. In certain contexts in Old English a letter 'g' would be pronounced like how we would pronounce the letter 'y', such as when a word (e.g. 'Tostig') ends in 'ig'. Another example would be when a word begins with 'ge' (e.g. Geld). Sometimes when people are writing Old English using the modern English alphabet this will be represented by having a dot above the 'g'. Also, if you bury into history books you will sometimes see 'Tostig' written in other, modernised spellings, such as 'Tosty' or 'Tosti', and in German it's often written as 'Toste'. Would have thought you'd know how to pronounce your own name :p
A long, long time ago... And I hate to break it to you but most people in Northumbria were Danish and spoke a different language to the south and hence “Tostig” is not pronounced “Tosty” in Northumbria. As Earl, I ought to have you arrested and thrown in jail lest I become a spectacle to the world! You are just like my usurper brother! Tostig Godwinson Earl of Northumbria Rightful king of England.
@@joey1317 I hate to break it to you, but even though you are Earl of Northumbria, you're not *from* Northumbria. Just like your bro Harry, and all your other numerous siblings, and also your father, Godwin, you're a southerner, raised in Wessex, where your family's power base is. Therefore, when naming you, your parents would have named you to fit with pronunciation in the south, so your name is still pronounced 'Tosty'. The fact you don't even know your own history is just another example of why Harold is that far more fit to run the country than you!! :P

Can you make a video on the best/perfect way to structure your answers for 16/20 mark questions? Or ways to structure each question?

I love Morcar Ælfgarson
Is there a reason why you pronounce his name 'Tosty' and not how it is written? Not trying to sass you but I'm just curious if I'm saying it wrong.
Because the letter 'g' in old English is often (inc in this case) pronounced in the same way a 'y' would be pronounced in modern English :)
