Appreciation instead of Accumulation | A bluray collecting discussion

  • Hello fellow collectors, I hope you are doing very well today. In this video I discuss something that has been on my mind since Christmas, which is appreciating what I have, instead of just focusing on accumulating more. It is easy to let things get out of hand in our collecting, as there are so many great titles to buy, so many wonderful films getting released all the time, but it becomes harder to then appreciate what you have and get the most out of them. That's something I hope to change for myself this coming year, and instead of buying more and more, to stop for a beat, and enjoy the things that I already have. I hope you enjoy the discussion.

    Good topic, proper selection of books, movies and games is key as well as recycling, donating or trading the ones don't spark joy on us anymore. Avoiding immediate conversion of wishes into needs is also helpful.

      I couldn't agree more. It's all too easy to buy without giving things as much thought as maybe we should, and once we have things, we should definitely be re-visiting them to see if we still enjoy them and want to keep them around. Converting wishes into needs is a brilliant insight! There is definitely something in the collectors mindset that seems to lend itself to that sort of thinking. Definitely something that I need to work on!

    Thanks couldn’t agree more . We have three people in house all love Physical Media & Books but later about books..
    We had so many in collection that we have not seen. So now all new physical media get put in a stack to watch before adding it to the collection. And you must absolutely love it. It’s something you definitely watch again and enjoy. So if one person loves it it stays. And 3 dislike it we dump it, and will pass it on for someone else to enjoy.

      Ah that's so lovely that you have a few in your household all into it! I always like that idea of keeping the watchpile seperate, so you can easily see whether it's a reasonable size or not. Great that you can discuss what's best to keep and to move on between you as well. That can help make the tough decisions a bit easier when everyone can get behind it.

  • @bonnetdedouche437

    Its the FOMO with LE's. Id suggest a collection cull too. Whittle down the watch pile and make fluid Keep/Sell piles. Keep the flow constant. 1 in 1 out. Be ruthless with collecting and avoid decision fatigue to keep the watch pile down.

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies  6 місяців тому +1

      It's interesting you say about 1 in 1 out, because I've been thinking about that a lot recently. Just before Christmas I hit 1000 films, and I thought maybe now is the time to implement something like that before things get out of control. A cull is definitely not a bad idea at all too! The tough thing is being ruthless, but like you say, that's what you have to be. Thanks so much for watching!

    • @bonnetdedouche437
      @bonnetdedouche437 6 місяців тому +1

      @goosesmovies if you employ that method, and become ruthless, you'll end up finding that there really aren't that many discs you will return to over and over again. I tend to think there is a psychological seed of doubt sewn in when buying physical media. That it depreciates massively bar the odd title (forget scalpers here). Forget the cost, ditch the stuff you won't rewatch and keep the clutter down. Watching 1000 films is achievable in a lifetime. Rewatching the same 1000 films many times in a lifetime isn't. Drop the psychological attachment. 👍

      @@bonnetdedouche437I totally agree. I have around 600 movies on dvd. I know it's not the biggest collection but what I find is about 90 percent of the discs I'll watch once and never again. I find myself watching the sane 40 odd movies over and over again. I bought all of my dvds second hand and louads from charity shops so I haven't spent alot on my collection so it doesn't bum me out but I see people with huge collections and just think about how much money they have wasted. It seems like an addiction

      I@@goosesmoviesI have a certain amount of shelf space set aside for my DVD/Blu-ray and will not go beyond that.
      To make room for new titles I must either, a) offload least favourite titles, or b) replace old frivolously packaged DVD's with more streamlined Blu-ray versions.
      Anyone with a large collection will have things they haven't watched for 5 or 10yrs - you often find that when you get round to them again, your tastes have changed and it should be an easy task to sell or give them away to charity.

    This is something I'm desperately trying to master as we head into a digital age. Imagine spending ten years worth of time and money on music, movies and games but having literally nothing to show for it.

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I can relate with you. The way I deal with it is to limit the space I have for my collection. Once it is full, I need to sell or donate part of it to make room for new additions. That forces me to curate my collection while not feeling that I am missing out on new releases that I want. That is a compromise that works for me personally.

    Great video. I have arrived at the same point as you; so many books on my shelves to read, so many films on my collection shelves to watch.. I am glad to have come to be serious about collecting later in life; it makes it easier for me to ask (and honestly answer) if I really want that new set because it's cool and I want it on my shelf, or if I actually will watch it enough times to justify buying it in the first place. And can I justify the outlay, when our daughter's at college and I have other interests and hobbies which need and want attention ($$..). It has led me to say no to several things I wanted, and once I've made the decision, I almost always find that the initial want/need is gone and replaced with a feeling of contentment. I now wait, take a breath (or have a good night's sleep) before hitting that Buy Now button on my laptop. I shall also go back and weed out things which I can honestly say I will never watch again. A smaller, more heavily curated collection is right for me.

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies  6 місяців тому +1

      I think that's a great place to reach where we can honestly ask and answer ourselves whether something is worth what we are paying for it. I think community hype around releases can definitely also be a fuel for things and you can end up wanting to buy something that really, if you hadn't seen other people's excitement and anticipation for, wouldn't have been of too much interest. And yet, because of the hype, it becomes one of those releases we feel we want, but exactly as you say, might just end up looking cool on a shelf, and isn't really something you ever return to watch again. When there are so many pulls on our finances, it's those purchases that we can do without for sure. I also think that's sage advice to just take a breath or sleep on a purchasing decision. I actually wrote in big letters on my spreadsheet where I keep track of my collection, 'there is no rush!', so I'm definitely trying to do the same thing!

    Being a collector is becoming more and more about making choice with the physical media market flooded with releases from boutique labels at the moment especially if you follow a label, take Radiance for example - they launched last year but put out so many releases at such a rate of release that although I like their output so far in 2024 I have chosen not to continue to collect their output and instead will wait for sales to choose what I want - its hard thrugh as their Spines were numbered that in itself is a collectors nightmare. Criterion do Spine numbering and also Indicator, but you just can't collect them all there are too many releases to keep up. There in lies the problem FOMO plays a even larger part as we watch other Ytubers you see and want what they have and invariably click on purchase. This year, I've decided to budget more strictly and look at the titles that might go to HMV sales and wait a bit longer and try not to be tempted by what Ytubers buy.

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies  6 місяців тому +1

      I think you're spot on, and the choices have never been harder to make. I'm almost exactly the same in my thinking with Radiance. I know with something like Criterion, I'll never get close to completing it, but with Radiance I thought I could stick with them as I'm also really enjoying their releases. It's exactly as you say though, with all the other great releases each month, it just becomes way too much. Not only financially but also in terms of time and space, and it can be a difficult thing to face that we just can't get everything, though we might want them all. (I'm definitely right there with you in regards to the spine numbers too. I have little interest in OC and Stiggs for example, but I have been so tempted to grab it, just so I can keep up the numbers!) I found more strict budgeting really helpful for the first half of last year, and it's something I hope I can stick to better this year. Hope you find it a useful tool in your collecting. Definitely a solid idea to hold out and wait for the HMV sales as well, though I wish we had more concrete and definite ones like they do in the US, as it's always a bit of a guessing game for us here when they will happen and what will be included.

Either way, I’ve never really collected for the sake of collecting. I know exactly what I want when I see it and purchase only titles I think will be truly worth it for me and my family. A dozen discs a year at most plus 5 to 10 music albums. Special editions not necessary, especially at $50-100 a pop. Life is expensive enough as it is.

I only collect things I played when I was young, and that mean something important to me, and only a small number each year, and yet bafflingly with my blurays and other collecting, I just can't seem to strike that same balance. I think the nostalgia driven collecting is a really great one, as you already know something means a lot to you, and you have already appreciated it for a long time, so owning a physical copy of it, you know you'll return to it again and again and get the most out of it. Definitely agree, it's impossible to keep up with things as it is, let alone if you try with the special editions, as they are getting more and more expensive!

    Definitely a fomo thing, for me at least. Let’s say a boutique label releases a limited edition, they only have the license for so long, so if you miss your chance to grab it, you may never get the chance again. I’m certainly not as bad with films these days, but when the indie labels do their announcements, I find I’m ordering stuff even if I know I will probably not get a chance to watch it anytime soon, if at all. That sounds absolutely crazy to me, but I’m sure there are others who do this exact same thing. I see folks buying 20-30 releases in a charity shop and I look at them and wonder when they will actually get to watch those movies and a week later, they are buying another 20-30. The question is are we buying to enjoy or just buying for buying sake.

      FOMO for sure is a huge factor, and I often find community hype around certain things can fuel that too, leading to buying something you're not even that excited about, just because others are excited, and you don't want to miss out. I am exactly the same in buying things I know I am vaguely interested in, and it's a case of 'i'll get round to it at some point', but then of course it sits on the shelf for months or even years collecting dust. After my break from collecting last year, I tried to think unless I want to watch this right away, I shouldn't buy it, and it definitely worked well for me for a couple months, and something I want to try again this year. I like that question a lot though, 'are we just buying for buying sake' - that's something I need to ask myself before I make a purchase for sure!

    I sometimes thing about using all my art cards to make a big collage and put it up on my wall but I have not gone through with the idea yet.

      @goosesmovies  6 місяців тому

      Ah this is a great idea! Have you thought about what you'd make the collage on? I have thought about using pinboards in the past, but I wouldn't want to have any holes through the cards. I wonder if there is something they could slot into or lightly fix onto perhaps. Thanks so much for the idea!

      @@goosesmovies I wouldnt want to damage them either, I was thinking about using those poster frames where you put the poster in between a glass or plastic panel and an underlay, lock the two parts in place and hang it on the wall. The only problem I see is once you make a nice collage and actually hang it up then with the only thing keeping the cards in place being force from the sides then gravity will do its thing and they will eventually start sliding down and changing position little by little.

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies  6 місяців тому

      That's interesting, I do wonder if the force would be enough to hold things in place if maybe there is quite a tight fitting frame that's available to buy. I wonder if it's possible to use a photo album and cut out the little sleeves for the cards to fit into, and then you could stick down the plastic sleeves, without damaging the artcards at all.

    Comments just disappear after I have written them. I have not been rude, or insult anyone in any of the comments, just discussing indepth and in general around this topic without any foul language. I have rewritten the same comment a few times now. They just disappear as soon as I write them and press reload on this video. Never had this happen before. This is a test to see if this comment shows up.

      So now this comment also showed up again, but still my main comments around the videos actual topic is still not showing up. Must mean that some word in it is being flagged by UA-cam as not suitable, but I don't understand which one, since nothing I wrote was rude, insulting or any foul language being used. It was genuinely about the topic of this video, my own experiences around it and not directed at- or naming any person in particular. I even tried a few variations of it, removing some words that I thought possibly could be seen as "problematic" although really nothing of it was rude or anything, but none of the version I tried to post shows up, so I can not figure out what single word could flag it as inappropriate or whatever is causing this. Never had this happened before.
      In any case I give up trying to post my comment, which is sad, since this is a topic I have spent a lot of time thinking around over decades now, being a collector myself.
      At least you will get some "interaction" with this comment for the algorithm on your video. :)

      Hello my friend, I am not sure what has happened, rest assured I have not deleted anything, nor would I ever. I saw your second half comment so from point 4 onwards, but could not see the first half, so I went onto the video page to take a look, but then couldn't see any comment at all and it has disappeared from my list of comments to reply to. Luckily I screenshot that comment so I can get to it as I make my way through, and respond more in depth, but I'm so sorry we seem to have lost your first 3 points. I want to say thanks so much for commenting and engaging in the discussion, I appreciate it enourmously, and thank you so much for the thought and effort you have clearly given it, and please rest assured, I will thoroughly read your comment I managed to screenshot which had point 4 onwards, and I will certainly reply.

      @@goosesmovies Sounds good. Yeah, this must be something on UA-cams end. The comments disappeared so fast that they were gone after a simple reload. No one could have time to even read them and report them or remove them manually. It must have been automatically and at once by some UA-cam bot. I can try and write the other 3 points one by one here in these replies, but I fear that might remove this whole thread.

      @@goosesmovies *2. Collecting in general.*
      Related to FOMO in a way, but that *you want to actually own things.* Be able to watch it whenever it suits you. With digital online services that is not even possible, since you are left at the whim of corporations. If they will suddenly go bankrupt, decide to remove that service or access to that digital media, you have nothing left. However with physical media and items, it is very much a logical reasons to buy them. Exactly for the reasons I just specified. On top of that whenever your internet is down, or you are in a location with no internet, or unreliable internet, you can still watch those movies, as long as at least the power is on.
      Same with some games. Unless they require always online, or have a DRM that requires regular log-ins to verify your legally bought copy of a game. It's why I do not like games as a service, nor DRM's in general. This goes for streaming movies as well. There are so many series and movie I am interested in are not on any streaming service where we live. When they are then maybe once I get around to watch them they have been removed, or they only still have the 2 latest seasons in their library. Not to mention you pay for one service, then the things you want to watch suddenly is removed and moved to another service, so you end up with tons of subscriptions costing a small fortune. Very annoying.
      I think that is a big part of why physical media has made a comeback of sorts. A small one, which might only be a fraction of the total market, but still a comeback. Vinyl in particular (even more than a small part with vinyl), but even CD's are starting to be in demand. Some say it's the "new vinyl", meaning CD's are starting to be a new trend like vinyl has been for some time now. Also some DVD's and Blu-Ray's has started to go up in value, which is a sign of a demand. Funny, because at the same time big retail stores are shutting down their physical media sections. Big corporations pushing for online digital copies. I think that is a plan by the bigger corporations which makes the movies and games to try and force us into digital dependancy, push us into their eco system and become life-long subscribers (get our data into their systems with direct access to us, keep track of our habits) rather than occasional physical shoppers whom they have no real access to, or control over. Under the banner of "convenience", "for your sake" etc. Turning it into a self fulfilling prophecy. Remove physical media, then say everyone just wants and demand digital media. Make it a hassle to buy physical stuff, then say that customers have changed their habbits. Just like they are doing with physical cash where I live, banmks not handeling cahs anymore, charging shops more if they want to deposit cash (leading to many stores here refusing to take cash as payment anymore), removing ATM machines etc, but I digress.

      @@goosesmovies *3. Having to collect it all. Becoming an obsession.*
      *It can be due to being on the spectrum. I'm talking about the Autistic spectrum.* No, not necessarily so, but a possibility. It can also be due to some other personality disorder or your brain being wired to easily become addicted to things (certain beverages, shop-a-holic, game addiction etc), or a hoarder. It's why it's even worse when corporations manipulate people with certain mental conditions, who are wired differently and this can be one of the weaknesses to exploit for greedy corporations. It is for example very common that someone with autism (myself included) gets stuck, just like you said, almost fixated and in a loop in our minds at a hobby, topic, item, and/or collection. It becomes more of an obsession and addiction. Almost nothing else matters. It's also why it's not uncommon that people with autism also develop some form of OCD. My entire life I too have been that way. I never even got to know, until very recently, that I was autistic, after going through numerous tests. Mind you, that does not mean that anyone having a hobby, or a deep interest in something is automatically autistic. People with autism are just as diverse as other people. There are many criterias to be disagnosed as Autistc (being on the spectrum, neurodiversity etc). That I have OCD on the other hand is something I have known for decades now. Although as a teenager I did not know that it was called that, nor that it was a specific condition, I just felt I had like check lists to go through and some kind of supersticous rituals I had to perform. Kind of like when people have to spit if black cat passes the street, or throw salt over their shoulders. Just a lot worse.
      As a small kid I was stuck on Dinosaurs and knew more about them than my teachers. When they said something that was wrong I even corrected them and my parents were called in, but as it turned out I was right according to various books at that time. Still that teacher never liked me after that. She singled me out and blamed me for many things after that. Then I moved on to model building, then more specifically sci-fi model building and sci-fi in general. Space: 1999, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Alien(s), you name it. I even cut out every newspaper ad for when the movies would come up in cinemas and bought tons of magazines, models, posters and other stuff all about sci-fi. Later on movies on VHS, then DVD and blu-ray. I had a period where I was into Aircraft carriers and naval aircrafts. Due to the movie "The Final Countdown". I had to buy every model I could find of such ships or aircrafts. As well as borrow every library book I could find with photos of them, to paint and build every detail correctly. Then it became music, back in the days vinyl and learning to mix, scratch and become a DJ. To this day I have like 30 old soda cases filled with vinyl, mostly 12 inch maxi singles. Around 3000-4000. All bought through the late 70's to early 90's. Oh and yes I became a DJ playing both in clubs and at local radio back in those days. Still I spent more on records than I ever made in saluary. Some record I never even played once on any club, but just had to buy. Again like an obession.
      Gaming was always a part as well. From our first consol of Pong, which we later traded in to get a Philips VideoPac G7000 in the late 70's (which I still have and working to this day), since it had more games you could buy lose and switch to play. Of course that same type of behaviour followed me into gaming. I had to have the collectors editions of games I played. I had to have all the limited time cool outfits in certain MMO RPG's I played. Like LoTRO / Lord Of The Rings Online from 2007 until 2019. When they went from subscription to so called "Free To Play" I started going "hmmm", since I don't buy into that any corporation gives out anything for free without some alterior motive. When they also introduced lootboxes I started getting weary, but as lootboxes became more and more part of the game that was it for me. It was the drop that made the glass spill over for me. Since then I could not even pay a few times and know what I'd get anymore, but it became pay and have a 0.0001% chance to get the outfit or armour I wanted. Which to me is more like gambling and not gaming. I am a gamer, not a gambler, so I felt it was not fun anymore. Back then I still did not know was on the spectrum.
