My biggest takeaway from the match is that Canada is on the right track to being consistently relevant in soccer. And isn't that the goal? Sure, we want results now, but the true path to success is playing the long game and not the short one. Marsch has been here for 3 games against the highest level opponents and Canada has played above expectations in my opinion. We've seen glimpses of the potential of Kone, Cornelius, Shaffelburg and Bombito. Every game this team plays together, they will get stronger. Being in the Copa America against teams like Argentina on TSN will draw Canadian viewers in. Ideally this brings more viewers, more sponsorships and more dollars so Canada Soccer can invest that money into youth development for the next wave of players. This game was another positive step in the right direction and Canada gave Argentina a scare while showing their respect for the Canadians with their late substitutions. I've been around for 50+ years and have never seen Canada Soccer in a better place than it is right now...and we have a lot of room to improve. Great stuff!

I noticed that we (the Canadians) certainly had the fitness to compete and give Argentina some trouble during the match. In fact, we probably should have scored a couple of times (David-header, and Eustaquio-header).
However, we just didn't have enough talent to compete with Argentina throughout the match, thus, our players had to know the system very well, which they were just getting used to. That aspect of things is very promising.
I hope Crepeau can continue his fantastic play!

Argentinian here, the whole team seemed to be at half steam, some completely missed goals and those 1v1s with the goalkeeper that peak Messi would have never have an issue with.

As someone who grew up watching the CMNT since the 80s, I was impressed by the high line. Yes, it has risks which Argentina exposed. However, in years past Canada would sit back and play for a tie against stronger opponents, and even CONCOCAF nations. It was boring. Last night's game was exciting to watch, and the team showed that they belong on the world stage. And I predicted before the game that we would lose 2-0 or 3-1, so they didn't under-perform.

    • @OttawaRocks
      @OttawaRocks 2 місяці тому +3

Like yourself I've been watching CanMT since the early 80s:
      (1) While the high line creates more excitement I'm good with using it only if our players have the skill set to play it. At the moment there are too many 2 on none breakaways given up etc. In the future, (a) Marsch will get better with subbing gassed players out of the game and (b) the players will get better by making quicker decisions when possessing the ball. However, IF they don't get better let's change the system or at least tweak it.
      (2) I had a similar expectation to yourself for the team. If Canada lost by 3 goals we would be hitting par IMO. In the end, we were close to walking away with only a 1-0 loss but ended up 2-0. However, on the flip side it could have been a 5-2 or 6-3 kind of game. Maybe 2-0 isn't so bad (as you suggest).

    • @pcoleman1971
      @pcoleman1971 2 місяці тому +3

@OttawaRocks It’s a catch-22. How do our players develop the skills if they sit back in a defensive shell. Yet, if they play with a high line against top-tier teams, the talent discrepancy is apparent.
All I know is that last night's match was very entertaining, and I couldn't say that about CMNT matches in the past.

  • @zeo4481

    1. Canada played better then expected
    2. First half both teams were measuring each other , no one wanted to risk it
    3. Argentina missed a LOT of chances
    4. Canada should have scored and if the want to qualify as 2nd, they HAVE TO
    5. If Argentina want to win Copa they CAN'T miss those vs Ecuador/Mexico/Uruguay
    Edit:
I completely disagree on your 5th take. After the 75 minute or so Canada HAD NO LEGS. Argentina hand 1/3 rd of their chances in the last 15 and against a more motivated team than Argentina that energy drop will cost you!

The last 15 minutes of the game Argentina substituted a few guys and did look dangerous again (they got their 2nd goal late), although during most of the time leading up to that Canada was the team doing most of 'pressing' (considering). All I mean here is that Canada was advancing more and had a couple of chances...I'm not saying we vastly outplaying Argentina! Most of the time our players were dispossessed of the ball too easily. Especially when Argentina brought on a whole bunch of defenders onto the field.
Anyway, one of Messi's 1 v 1 on the Crepeau should not have happened b/c there was a clear foul on Shaffelburg that wasn't called. It would have made the game more interesting if the other foul was properly called on him as well (just outside the 18). I thought the referring was absolutely horrible (helped out Argentina a lot).

    1. The ref sucked
    2. The team was gassed after 65 min
    3. Schaff should start.
    4. Millar and Larin on the bench
    5. Davies tries to do too much sometimes. Buchanan didn't try enough, it seemed like his head was elsewhere.
    6. Still not sure about this style of play from the coach.

  • @Megadeth6633

I'm not going to underestimate Canada because they did a great job, but the truth is if Argentina didn't screw up their chances so much, we would be talking about a 4-0 or 5-0. And when critics see those numbers nothing good is said. The score was only 2-0 and that is Argentina's fault.

    My 2 major takeaways
    1. 0 goals in 3 games under Marsch. They need to be more clinical in front of goal because there have been chances
    2. This pressing style is not sustainable over 90 minutes. The last 15-20 minutes of the game were really ugly and it could’ve easily been 4-0 if it weren’t for some great saves.

I'm concerned about the wings. Millar is ok in spots but also gives possession away cheaply. Tajon is a mess right now. He needs to step up. His left footed dribbler into touch with David ariving late killed us. If he's got confidence he probably sees that pass. Right now there is little composure.

Canada did not embarrass themselves at all on the pitch. We started nervously, but worked our way into the match. Slow start in the second half too, but we were quick to get back in it. Crepeau was brilliant. Mostly solid play. Some mental mistakes and turnovers. Biggest issue was lack of finishing. When you get quality chances against top opposition, you need to take them. Messi won the match with two fantastic passes. The "lots of chances" that concern you are in part because of pressing to score an equalizer. Lack of finishing is a bigger concern. What matters most is how we follow up in our next two matches. It is well past the days where playing bravely against a top team and then underachieving against lesser opponents is acceptable for Canada's MNT.

    1) Fitness was incredible
    2) structure and belief in structure was incredible
    3) still need to be a bit smarter about when to go for turnovers/breakouts, most argentina chances came from one or 2 players picking the wrong moment
    4) I thought schaff was far better than millar
    5) Marsch really impressed me, esp with the tactical change in the 2nd half. it didnt work out in a result but we were playing the world cup champ in a major tourny. it was a hell of a performance
    6) I now expect us to come out of the group

The high line and the compact 442 gave Argentina problems; they resorted to long balls over the top. The Canadian center backs need to be more aware of these balls. Canada had real chances to score in this game but the finishing was just not there. In the Athletic some folks indicated that Argentina should have won by 4 or 5 but many people disagreed because they ignored the opportunities that Canada also had. As a neutral my sense was that this game could have ended anywhere from 4-0 Argentina to a 2-2 tie. Most of the problems Canada faced were self inflicted by giving up possession in dangerous spots. All in all Jesse Marsch had done an excellent job with this team and I saw tactical flexibility in his approach to maximize the play of Canada. As an American it kills me that I saw more tactical nuance in this one game than with GGG in years.

If we're being real, with both teams scoring on all their chances the score should have been more like 5-2. So far, Canada has given 2 on none breakaways in both the Netherlands and Argentina games. In this Argentina game they did it twice, not to mention all those 1x1 chances on Crepeau. This gambling style could give the players the necessary experience to ultimately get better so that in the future they commit less of these types of errors - IF they get better. If they don't then it is up to Marsch to tweak or change his system. Hopefully, in the end the process works out.

The high line is going to burn us. I don't think our wings or cb know what to do or aren't quick enough to realize that every over the top ball is a threat with a line so high which is why Crepeau had to be 20yds beyond the box to make the save. It's unsustainable and will just lead to more goals against.

I know there is a lot of "what ifs" about our defense, but the bottom line is how can we expect to tie or win matches with zero goals? So as I have been saying for months, its time to stop beating up our defensive line holding top teams to just a couple of goals, while our world class forwards continually do not capitalize on scoring opportunities. Eustaquio had a sitter and headed right to the keeper. David is nowhere to be seen, and Larin continues to be just a touch too slow. And then there is Buchanan, who hasn't shown up for Canada match since 2022. Go out and score 2 goals against Peru, and if we lose, THEN criticize the defense. I also continue to believe that Laryea would be a better starter than Johnston.

Great video and such an entertaining match. This is the way to play for us to improve. My thoughts:
    - I think Buchanan needs to be on the left. He has looked so much worse for us on the right than he's looked for Inter on the left. I'd have him ready as a sub for Millar...
    - Start Shaff on the right next match. I think Davies/Millar and Shaff/Johnston work really well as pairings. Davies needs someone like Millar or Buchanan to work off, and Shaff needs stability behind him as he is very chaotic (in a mostly good way)
    - Hoilett is really missed as an option off the bench, especially if Buchanan's form doesn't improve quickly
    - Cornelius has been a rock for Canada, and with Miller on the bench I don't think I've ever felt this good about our CB options. (If LDF or JKL take a step soon, we'll be in heaven)
    - I am terrified by how were going to look when we likely have 60%+ possession next match

    My 5 takeaways:
    (1) Crepeau is the man.
    (2) Shaff was a revelation.
    (3) Marsch took too long to sub some of our gassed players out of the game. Next time hopefully he does better.
    (4) Marsch's utilization of new and/or younger players in the team has been great. With Biello we saw the beginnings of this and I was happy to see that Marsch has continued down this path. Canada's depth will only improve with these kinds of personnel moves while producing starter calibre players from time to time (hello Cornelius and Bombito!).
    (5) The lack of offense from our forwards group should resolve itself quickly as ultimately, class wins out over time. That said, hats off to better defensive play from our forwards group (e.g., David's play comes to mind).

Change our strikers. Buchanan as #9. Davies on his left Shaffleburg on his right. Play David in the #8 or 10 position. With Eustasquio and either Kone or Osorio. Play a back 4. Johnstone, Bambito, Millar, Cornelius. Cannot aford to go with 3 at the back when you are playing that high press line. David and Larin not working as twin strikers. Only 1 goal at the world cup (Davies) and no goals in the last three games. Maybe longer. If we are going to go with the high press and gamble with our defense, we have to be a high scoring team. I didn't think he played badly, especially in the 1st half. I think Jesse M. could've managed the subs better (had Laryea come on sooner for him). I think Liam ran out of gas!
There is a lot to like about him in comparison to most of our other players. 1) his shot 2) his creativity 3) soccer IQ
      4) skill on the ball We shall see how he does in the other games!!
I thought he was much better than Kone and Bombito. Even Buchanan struggled.
