I think what attributes to the Shiver bias/Frye disfavour isn't colorism or racism necessarily, but pretty privilege. And yes I know race & color have a lot of impact on what is considered beautiful, but I'm making the distinction.
Remember when Marina and Pearl were first revealed, everyone was already roasting Pearl and thirsting over Marina? I remember Marina having a lot of bias in Splatfests too, because she was the hot one, everyone wanted to be on her team. Pearl was disfavored because the fans considered her "ugly".
I think that's a repeat of what's happening with Shiver vs Frye. Most people find Shiver more attractive, and so the Splatfests are biased to her.

Shiver and Frye do have very similar outfits as pointed out in the video, so the difference probably lies in the personalities, where shiver is often more composed and traditionally ladylike while Frye more often than not feels more energetic and childlike (although real ones know they're both the same on the inside). Not at all to say that skin color and what society teaches people to seek after as the ideal isn't also a potential factor.

It was definitely after octo expansion that people liked Pearl a little more. I think they should've built more lore before doing this splatfest.

If you look into the story mode Frye has more leader qualities she’s always closest to the camera she is the only one to do the smoke bomb launch exit correctly and has the hardest boss. She can control a giant spinning cube and command eels to do a coordinated attack. Shiver always gets mad at the shark when you attack her as if she can’t control it too well, and has the easiest fight and can’t smoke bomb out correctly. People clearly didn’t care about the question and just chose favorite character. Since shiver is Japanese and the majority of players live in Japan it’s obvious why she absolutely dominated popularity as they love seeing their culture in the game.

Brown southeast asian here, Frye has always been that cool representation we got in a Nintendo game, and yes everyone trashed on her. But honestly, none of them were flaming her for being dark or based on South Asia, they commented more on her forehead. To say that she is “more than a fictional idol,” respectfully, is giving chronically online I need to touch grass. She is a fictional idol. If you are seeking representation, help those in your community, support real life south asian creators… Frye made me so happy to finally get south asian rep in a Nintendo game, but at the end of the day we shouldn’t overdramatize it. It’s not world ending. It’s not the only representation we get. It’s just a cool FICTIONAL character based on our culture.

I think people are also upset about how Splatfests aren’t region locked anymore. Japanese players are more likely to support Shiver, not just cause of her socially acceptable appearance, but also because her character is based in real life Japan culture, so it gets a little patriotic in there too. Thus, they have an advantage in Shiver-biased numbers.
And it’s honestly bigger than this specific “Shiver Vs Frye Vs Big Man” splatfest, and more about how Shiver’s splatfests had been continuously winning since the very beginning, and don’t look like it’ll stop any time soon.
I personally always choose splatfest teams by what option is better, but i still really favor Frye as a brown person myself. Like the vid says, Frye nurtures that darker skinned representation in Splatoon, and personally it’s so disheartening how people have treated her so horribly especially since i’ve been with Splatoon since the first game. Seeing there finally be darker-skinned idols and getting them dogged on kind of sucks when you love the game so much.
I absolutely love all of the idols (which seems to be a rare thing lately 😭) so I understand Shiver defenders fighting for their life from Shiver haters. It’s sad for any character to get dogged on tbh. And Shiver doesn’t deserve the hate, none of the idols do. Unfortunately, Nintendo’s unlikely to region lock cause of the splatoon content they’re working on either. It’s all just pretty much disheartening.

I was going to vote for her, but this time was a reason to finally compete for Team Frye (I first played Splatoon on "Power vs Wisdom vs Corage"). Shiver is seems to be the most serious, most inteligente and controled, and not because of her being japonese, but what vibes her personality gives. Honestly, the 'frye never gets good options' argument doesn't hold any weight to me any more. The only times Shiver ever got an option that seemed like 'the objectively right answer' are the Gear and Money splatfests. Every other option frye had gotten - fire, sweet, milk chocolate, aliens, wisdom, strawberry - they are not bad. They're actually very common. People love sweet food, and milk chocolate, and the last time I checked [don't quote on this though] _Aliens_ had more presence than Nessie. Damn, I think _Big foot_ had more presence than nessie. Smh. I know not everyone votes honestly, some people will go for their favorite idols only regardless of if they win or lose, but I do wish we could stop looking back at Frye's options as if they were the most low-tier bottom dollar picks, because they really weren't. Until the team gives her bad theme options, I can't sit here and honestly agree with that kind of notion.
I agree with everything else you've said though and am glad you talked about it from how you see things regarding the splatfest.
I'm with Gem however when it comes to the trash talking. It doesn't do any good. If I go to a splatoon event, I don't go to watch people trash on each other. Not only does that make things un-fun for the other people playing, but it also makes things uncomfortable to watch. I did not enjoy sitting through that video and eventually skipped ahead a little bit, because it's just not enjoyable. I remember watching the Splat3 championship stream, and saw a team squidbagging at some point. I can't remember which team it was, maybe it was Jackpot or another, but that's what it looked like anyways. Mocking the competition isn't out of the ordinary, but it doesn't make it fun to see. That's how I felt here, with Kyo doing all that. It's not new, no. But why does it _have_ to happen? Why does it feel like people have to argue to make sure everyone expresses some basic decency towards their competition? I don't really understand it, I'll be honest. The only effects I've seen from any trash talking in any kind of event were negative. At Best. You can easily place rules that run along the lines of "No heckling," or "Do not talk out with the intention to rile others up" the same way you can in a discord, or any other event really. Whether people _want_ that is up for debate obviously. But I don't believe this is one of those things that we have to stop at with 'Nothing can be done 🤷🏻‍♂'.

    • @syligator
      @syligator Рік тому +8

I can agree. As a person who votes based on theme and not on char I have been all over them. Like I chose fun (Big Man), Plant (Shiver), Sweet (Frye), Dark choco (Shiver), Aliens (Frye), Courage (Big Man), Mint Chip (Big Man) then I didn't choose but I probably woul've went with love(Big Man) and lastly I chose Shiver. So while it is not perfectly distributed it is simply based on preferences. Like I actualyl know a lot of people who like Milk Chocolate best but I just love Dark choco. I wish we could generally be more loving in the Splatoon community again. I think some people do take the Splatfests too seriously. They are about fun. So I am very sorry that POC feel attacked. I think Frye is cute and important to Deep Cut just as the other members.
I also dislike trashtalk and the likes but I just stay away from it. Only kind I enjoy is fun stuff where you very obviously notice it is in good fun.

literally tho w the second part, "it's always been this way" is a non argument for something as malleable as social norms within certain communities. and tbh it's weird that when people express being uncomfortable with this kind of behaviour they're met with "get used to it" and "stop complaining" but those same people are so fast to defend the practice when it's called into question (basically both parties respond immediately with an emotional response so it's ludicrous the people who are fine w trash talking jump to label people complaining abt it as the emotional ones who need to get over things)

And if they are, they can't see other people being willing to change, so they keep it that way for those people. On the Kyo situation, from what you described, I disagree with your position. Even if you aren't trying to be mean to others saying mean things can be harmful. You can say "just don't do it to people who don't like it", but should our standard really be that we can trash talk anyone except people who have the courage to admit they don't like it? I hear your point that it's just a given in competitive scenes, but does it have to be? It seems to me that Splatoon fans are generally against trash talk (which could be totally wrong), and I am not against having a community with a higher standard of sportsmanship.
Like Gem said, is there a benefit to trash talk? Do we need it to keep Splatoon events interesting? I don't think so. Now I'll admit that I don't have a lot of experience with competitive events and I may be reading some stuff wrong, but I just wanted to share my opinion. I can also see artists just using that colour pallette because they like it or that was the style they went for and nothing more.
    Racism ain't cool full stop.

I should add that I have since heard that players are being doxxed over this splatfest but I have no proof, just hearsay. Racism isn't cool, racist actions being disguised as art or "just your style" isn't cool and neither is doxxing.

  • @cornlobby8404
    @cornlobby8404 Рік тому +17

Sorry this is long, I just wanted to get all my thoughts on the situation out there.
So, I was on Team Shiver myself.
But that was only because the Splatfest wasn't "Who's your favourite Deep Cut Member" It was asking who'd be the best leader. And I've always seen it as
    "Shiver would plan the fire"
    "Frye would cause the fire"
"Big Man would be IN the fire"
And seeing as I thought Shiver has a lot of cunning traits I chose her. But Frye and Big Man aren't bad picks either, they all have great leadership traits.
I like ALL the Deep Cut members! They all have some form of representation and their music style blends them all perfectly. A blend of Eastern Asian style brought on by Shiver, South Asian style brought on by Frye, and what surprised me, Brazilian theming regarding Big Man!
A part of me feels as if the Splatfests aren't only influenced by racial bias (don't get me wrong, it does definitely play a factor) but I feel as if they give Shiver most of the "sensible" options. (Like the Gear vs Grub vs Fun Splatfest. The logic was that *with Gear* you could *have Fun* and also *obtain Grub.* So I picked Gear because that meant access to the other two to me.) Frye generally gets the bad end of the three sided cake, and to me... THAT'S A SHAME. That is beyond a shame, because I LIKE FRYE.
And then Big Man gets the silly option on occasion.
Frye and Big Man getting sillier options than Shiver is a definite problem, because I don't pick Splatfest Teams based on what Idol I like, I pick them based on what I agree with and what option I like most.
To me I feel as if Splatfest talk is becoming more hostile. There's been a noticeable amount of discourse to me since Money vs Fame vs Love. I chalk it up to Splatoon reaching a much wider audience than it used to, but still, way too much toxicity. At first it was all just jokes, but then Money won and people went bonkers stating the game was homophobic. The game which not only now allows crossdressing (in the form of the School Uniform gear) but also femme hair on masc characters and vice versa. I picked love, and am currently in a gay relationship. Yeah it's disheartening that money won but I remember that "love" is a very strong word in other places. People don't say "I love you man" to a friend in a lot of other cultures because the word "love" is seen as strictly romantic. It didn't bother me as much since it's not *regional.* What bothered me was everyone calling people who picked money homophobic. Homie, "love" ain't just a homosexual term.
I digress. I wish people would look past "hee-hee funny forehead" to see how great Frye is as a character. From what I know, the forehead is somewhat based around what is considered beautiful in South Asian cultures. While I don't hate people for forehead jokes, I still refrain from it because I feel mean laughing at it.
Life's too short to hate characters in a bright, beautiful, and fun videogame about Squids, Kids, and Colours. Endless colours. Above the darkness of the lore there are endless colours.
I'm more Filipino and Puerto Rican than I am German and British, but feel as if I don't deserve a say on a lot of racially charged situations since I haven't had to deal with most of the problems people with darker skin-tones or non-European facial features unfortunately have to. As a writer I strive to make as many diverse characters as I can because the world would be beyond boring if we were all the same; I love writing stories where everyone, no matter who they are, come together to march through the storm, to rebuild, to fight together. All I can say is, I think most people picked Shiver because she has had the most "sensible" options and they truly thought she was a great leader. Or they just thought "he-he cute octopus me like," to which, hey, who am I to judge.
Those who do pick Shiver and evade Frye because of racial biases, those who make Frye and Marina lighter skintones, those who say "fairer skin is better" are the ones who should sit down and really think about things. Really educate themselves. I believe Shiver and the majority of her fans did nothing wrong, but I definitely believe Big Man and especially Frye deserve better.
It makes me glad to see posts in the plaza of Shiver, Frye, and Big Man hugging it out

The results will be boring but at the end of the day I'm just here to collect my snails and go home. Splatoon 3 Splatfest is a sham and I'm ready to accept that.

At some point i warmed up to frye, though, but i dont like shivers smug personality, no matter how much the other members try to say she has a heart of gold. She should show that heart more if its there.. but onto the meat and potatoes of this comment
Its kind of awkward being half SE Asian (cambodian specifically) with this whole debacle over shiver and frye. That, and the fact I'm light skinned cuz im half white lol. Despite Cambodia basically being a mix of indian and chinese cultures, frye just resonates more with me outside of personality (im more like big man in that sense). Even though I'm not one to dawdle too much about representation, it did feel like sh-- to see people telling me im just coping when explaining that there is a bias towards shiver from japan. However, I do think both sides should be listened to regardless of affiliation. Theres no learning and understanding unless both parties communicate, or at least thats how I see it. Shiver fans need to stop saying to cope and to actually give feedback if we want this gunk to stop.
On a side note, some shiver fans were telling people to attack players and not the idol, despite the idol being fictional and players being actual people... I'd rather have anger go to something that cant actually feel than to real people.

First of all, people are actually wrecking their switches over this? It’s a 5 win streak, I know it’s frustrating and it’s okay to be angry but Jesus destroying a perfectly good Nintendo console?
Second off, literally everyone on every team spawn camps. Does it suck? Yes. Is it unfair? Yes. Is is limited to only one team? No, everyone does it because everyone wants to win.
Third off, CALM DOWN. Nobody on team shiver has said a single insult or word to the other teams that is offensive, rude, mean, etc. so why is everyone targeting us, reporting us, berating us, calling us toxic for PLAYING THE GAME AND WINNING, and blaming us for their broken switches that we had literally nothing to do with? Sorry for the rant I just don’t see people pointing any of this out

I don't think racism is that big of a factor there. It's most likely just JP players choosing Shiver, because she's very japanese inspired.
I also read that JP players sometimes like picking teams just based on Ink color, and last i time i've checked, blue is a waaaay more popular color than red and especially yellow. So if that's true, it could also explain Shiver's popularity in this Fest.
Either way, i think Splatfest results should be region locked again. The JP playerbase is just too big and it can cause problems if their culture heavily favors one option.

So in conclusion this was a super close match and with the popular team getting the most mirror matches thst means they worked even harder then the others for clout.

I think your comments on trash talk are completely wrong. I believe that, as someone who trash talks a lot, trash talk has no place on a professional/competitive stage. You wanna talk like that in scrims or practice with friends go for it. You wanna do it in solo queue in a game like Valorant or League, be my guest. But when you hit a stage and are playing in front of an audience, against other well respected people in the scene, you keep it to yourself. That's what casters are there for. THEY make fun of the players for little mistakes IF they feel comfortable with it. Especially as a competitor if you're invited out, you act as a guest in that house and treat the others with respect. No player went there with the intention of getting smack talked to and embarrassed in front of that crowd, they came to play. "it is to be expected" is a weak defense since if it's not expected everywhere (this would not fly at Nintendo world tournament) then it shouldn't be expected anywhere

I think they stopped with region locked fests because people complained that JP was getting all the good splatfests.
If anything, losing the popularity vote could be an advantage, because of how the clout system works. Your contribution is more significant if you have fewer players, where as with the team winning the popular vote you have to work that much harder to have the same impact because some people will vote but not play, contribute less than 100000 clout and bring the average down.
I do note that of all the splatfests I've only not voted for Shiver once, and that was the pokemon splatfest due to my preference for water. With that in mind, I do think that they need to start looking at better themes and giving Frye better choices.
Kyo has reached that point where he's so good and consistently a top performer thats its becoming popular in the West to hate on everything he does. Having said that, trash talk is natural in the course of competition. As long as dudes not talking about your mom for example its pretty chill, no need to deep it.

I know that I don't know all of the lore and dialogue, and that I'm not from Japan and as such don't know the culture, but the popularity of Shiver over Frye in the last splatfest might be partially explained by a previous Japanese splatfest; Boke vs Tsukkomi. This pitted, according to the translation by inkepedia, the funny person archetype against the deadpan archetype in a style of Japanese comedy apparently called Manzai... Given the traditional Japanese theming of Deep Cut and Splatsville, and what might be a similar dynamic between the characters in the English localization, it might be that there is an aspect of the characters that is lost in translation, and that is what gets Shiver some of her supposed large popularity in Japan...

Frye went more cultural in appearance and to most people that isn’t palatable- big forehead, colorism, and certain ‘foreign’ characteristics that are not easily commodified, generic down, and are niched can be seen as off putting. Shiver has the more commodified features- her face is more of that of kpop, she has that hit of Japanese that is well love for its fans, chest bandages that slap with the those gen Z folks, and has that red eye shadow that is seen everywhere from Manwha to Genshin. These are digestible traits that people don’t have to put effort in putting together because it is palatable. That is just how it is.

I have never participated in a splatfest ( just got the game like 2 weeks ago) (its alot of fun :)), but I don't understand why people are surprised that the Japanese prefer the idol based on Japanese culture? Like for me I am an Italian-American, I'd love to play an Italian in Overwatch, or Valorant, or whatever. But they never have them and the one time they did (Rainbow 6 Siege) I loved playing her. So when faced with the option for the Japanese to pick between a Japanese idol and a non-Japanese idol. I think the answer would be obvious. Personally, I like big man, hes chill~

That's not how that works. People found her attractive and people think frye is ugly for her cultural features. I understand not seeing the difference but there is something there sadly.

@@KenKnowsItHaving a huge forehead isn’t a cultural feature. If her hairline would be normal, I don’t think she‘d be that unpopular honestly

@@KenKnowsItDidn't people literally mock Pearl for having a big forehead at one point?
