    Good discussion. Interesting about the insurance and the alignment comments at the end.

      Watch your channel every week, about to restore my 1953 RCA. Thanks for the inspiration.

    This conversation could/should have went on for hours and I would have watched it. Thanks everyone.

      I'm glad you enjoyed it. Poor Dan had no power and flaky Internet service and I was coming down with a cold. I think we'll be doing more panels like this in the near future.

    One of the few very long youtube videos that I wish could have been longer.

    I was surprised when you said you always had color TV. I'm younger than you and we did always have color TV but we also had a smaller 12" (solid state) BW TV in the kitchen. It was actually in regular use until we got our first HDTV.

      Oh, I meant the main family TV was color. I had a series of B&W sets I garbage picked, until I scored a Sony Trinitron

    I love listening to you guys discuss the technical difficulty restoring old electronics. How I wish I got into this so much sooner. Anyway I scored an RCA 721TS in vgc and would love to have it restored. Bob are you interested? I don't care how long it'll take, cost is no issue.

      Sure, but you have to get it to me in Chicago

      @@bandersentv Great. I have family in the area and should be there in few months. I was told to remove the picture tube from tv as I will be traveling with the tv 1200 miles. Should I do that ? Also how do I get in touch with you , email , txt msg? Thank you.

    • @bandersentv
      @bandersentv  Рік тому +2

      @@Superbonker-np6iz Yes, you should. The front of the set comes off with a couple screws at the bottom and a couple wingnuts inside. Then the CRT can be carefully removed from the front.

    The topic of foil side of modern polypropylene capacitors is really crazy. It doesn't matter in 99% of applications, so sorry
    to the EE guy in Canada with the wall of oscilloscopes who never mentions that. He does sell the design ( in his Patreon) of making such a test unit. You guys should get together again. This was fun. Maybe Bob would consider doing a LIVE YT
    with Q and A one day.

    • @bandersentv
      @bandersentv  Рік тому +1

      Yes, I've been thinking about a live YT. I've never done it before, but am willing to try. I'd live to debate the outer foil topic as well. There are some subtleties that rarely get mentioned. For example, polyester film caps have an atoms thick layer of metal deposited on the plastic. I suspect that has different shielding properties that an actual piece of solid metal foil.

      What do you think of mylar capacitors? I've always been happy with them. Common knowledge says disc caps are noisy. The only time I ever noticed a difference with outside foil end is with feedback on an old high gain front-end guitar amplifier with the volume up high. It was one of my first amp recaps. After switching to a quieter type of capacitor I recapped it and redressed the leads it did lessen the feedback.

      @bandersentv  Рік тому

      @@SoundsLegit71 I used Mylar (polyester) caps almost exclusively. Occasionlly, polypropylene because I got a good deal or that all that is available in the specs I need. Never had a problem with them. Typically, I use ceramic only for bypassing power supplies and not coupling.

    I came to the museum this year with the family and chatted with a broadcasting historian there with his family. It was a great experience, thanks to Larry!

    Great information. Thanks, Bob. Who is the first, older gentleman and where is he located? Contact information? I have an RCA 621TS I may like him to look at. I'm in Manhattan (originally north side Chicago).
